Yesterday's benefits announcements mean that, on average, households with a disabled member will lose £400 a year by 2029-30, but some households could lose out by £9,600 a year or more Vital, damning analysis from @resfoundation.bsky.social: www.resolutionfoundation.org/publications...

Spare a thought for Neil as he goes to bed tonight in one of his four luxury homes. He faces a restless night worrying that a Benefit claimant in Walsall might be tucking into an extra Aldi Digesive biscuit.

Probably the most 2025 headline I've seen.

Made in Manchester: Ardwick-born Ellen Wilkinson (1891-1947), MP for Jarrow, played a big part in the 1936 Jarrow March of the unemployed to London to petition for the right to work, and became minister of education in the 1945 Labour government. 1/6

The government’s disability benefit cuts will have sharp knock-on effects People can receive carer's allowance, railcards and protection from the benefit cap if they get PIP These would be at risk for those losing PIP under the DWP's plans By me, for Big Issue www.bigissue.com/news/social-...

Call me a woke lefty do-gooder but I don't think doctors are diagnosing people with mental or physical conditions, illnesses or disabilities who don't actually have them. I think, in fact, doctors are quite clued up on the whole "who is ill" question, and should generally be considered the experts.

“Disabled young people tell us how few opportunities there are for inclusive work or training so we are extremely concerned about the removal of under 22's access to top-ups to universal credit unless they are in work or training.” @cyclingtheseaso.bsky.social www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

"The biggest cuts to disability benefits on record should shame the government to its core." Charities have slammed Labour's benefit reforms as a “violation of human rights” that could harm seriously ill and disabled people 👇 buff.ly/ptT2I27

On welfare cuts, the SDLP asks Keir Starmer “What was the point of getting rid of the Tories if Labour are going to do this?” #PMQs

Our CEO @pimlicat.bsky.social on why the UK's disability benefits system PIP is deeply flawed. "It will ask a question like, 'can you walk 200 metres?' Maybe you can if you have MS, but what you can't then do is get out of bed for two days. So you score zero on the PIP form."

Under-22s with long-term illnesses or disabilities will no longer be able to claim health top-up on universal credit under UK govt plans. 66,000 18 to 21-year-olds will lose it. People can't easily see GP, dentist, get access to hospital but will lose benefit. This is reckless and brutal.

From the information currently available it appears that many of us with autistic children who are currently eligible for financial support in the form of DLA will not meet the new eligibility criteria for PIP when they turn 16. This is extremely worrying and needs to be rectified quickly.

At the heart of every attack on disability benefits is the myth disabled people “get perks”: a free car, loads of cash, a life off work. It misrepresents the reality of disability, whilst exploiting low wages and high living costs to make the public envy people in daily pain.

I used to like Torsten Bell its a shame he became a politician. He comes across as incredibly arrogant now. Work has never lead to better mental health for me or many of the autistic people I know. Do better Labour. #Newsnight

Read together, this is quite sad? The clear focus feels far more on reducing costs than helping people back to work, with the underlying assumption being that most people with "less severe conditions" are exaggerating. The cuts to future claimants are frankly, horrific.

I see Andrew Neil has decided - probably from his seven bedroom villa in the south of France - that only 1.2 million people being immiserated is nowhere near enough.

Summary of the proposed welfare changes by the government today

I have communicated with people today who feel suicidal and pushed to self-harm or addiction relapse due to this bloody #DWP announcement. I’ve also spoke to people convinced they are the problem and that they should immediately come off benefits. Please do none of the above 1/2

Seems daft for the Government to continue it's push for civil servants to all go into offices, when offering WFH is both free (/cost saving) AND would offer good opportunities for helping many disabled people into work

Decision of whether you're disabled or not to be outsourced to blokes in a pub www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/work/de...

The disability charities are unhappy and I'm extremely worried about the impact on my own circumstances but I'll wait for someone cleverer than me to go through all the details. Whatever happens, there's time to oppose and challenge.

"The current provisions for children’s mental and emotional health are appalling." Too many children with special educational needs are living in poverty. It's a waste of public funds, writes Joanne Barker Marsh from @changingrealities.bsky.social ⤵️ buff.ly/LVi6jyf

And just like that, I'm now the parent of an adult! Happy 18th Sam 🎉🎂🎁🍻

We’re investing money seized from criminals into our communities. Last night, we gave £1 million to over 50 local projects that are working to make their communities safer. By supporting grassroots schemes, we can help transform lives and build a safer region for all.

Badenoch says we must "stop pretending things are simple" and "government by press announcement" - during a press announcement in which she pretends abandoning net zero is simple. We deserve better opposition than a mediocre YouTuber dropping "get real" truth bombs for likes. ~AA

Behind the headlines and the stigmatising language about disability benefits are real people - millions of them. People who are scared about what this news might mean for their day-to-day lives. 1/2

Absolutely loving the fact that from tomorrow I've got to pay double for my son to travel to college as his 16-17 saver Railcard has expired. Too many restrictions on the 16-25 card to so it's not worth buying 😠

The TESLA (a/k/a "TESLER") TAKEDOWN is working... WORLDWIDE! Turns out people really resent an unelected weirdo running our Government & creating economic chaos. Hit Elmo where it really hurts: in his big, fat wallet. If we #TankTesla, It's Ex-X! (a/k/a Twitter) #WinWin Visit www.takedowntesla.com

Today marks the 18th anniversary of this iconic moment in Eurovision history when Terry Wogan announced the wrong winner for the UK entry. I remember it vividly as I was heavily pregnant at the time and I laughed so hard my waters broke! youtu.be/1HbOlCy8x54?...
