šŸ’” How does V-Dem Collect Data and Construct the Dataset? 1,400+ country experts from all over the world have now completed the online surveys, assessing the democratic development in 2024 in their countries and areas of expertise. Watch or read in šŸ§µ1(5) #polisky #PoliSciSky #PoliticalScienceData

DoD terminates Minerva grants and State Dept eliminates Title VIII summer language institutes on the same day. Coming on the heels of COVID, thereā€™s going to be gaping holes in international expertise in the US for a generation. /slow clap

This is truly devastating news, not only for scholars and scientists, but also for the United States as a great power with global influence. Senseless, heartless, cowardly, and stupid.

New working paper! In this research note, @bogatyrev.bsky.social, @tabouchadi.bsky.social, @heikekluever.bsky.social, @lstoetze.bsky.social, and I present the first systematic test that causally identifies the electoral consequences of state-sponsored homophobia: osf.io/preprints/os... šŸ§µThread

Nemtsov. 10 years gone, murdered as he prepared a report on why Putin needed war in Ukraine.

Super interesting project! In light of recent discussions would be fascinating to see how this indicator compares to the V-Dem indicator of a similar concept, as well as intercoder reliability stats on the coding of the new indicator.

It is not only embarrassing; it will also make a peace agreement less likely by encouraging the kremlin to up the ante. So embarrassing and counterproductive.

THERE IS NO AMERICAN CONSTITUENCY FOR AN ALLIANCE WITH RUSSIA. Even the GOP hates it. Itā€™s just that Russia, for reasons we STILL do not know, owns Trump.

I am sick to my stomach. I am grateful for the absence of pretense, for the absolute clarity for anybody who cares to know.

Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, North Korea, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Hungary, Israel, Mali, Marshall Islands, Nicaragua, Niger, Palau, Russia, Sudan, United States. I guess this is the OECD now.

A slightly positive šŸ§µ in a dark time. Research on dictatorships and democratic backsliding suggests that the American experiment with authoritarianism could be brief. There are five reasons for this:

Honoured to have been part of this panel on Russiaā€™s forcible deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children, organised by Liliia Oprysk at the UiB Law faculty, with @yuliaioffe.bsky.social, Gaiane Nuridzanian and Svitlana Arabadzhy. Recording available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBNf...

Excited to share my new article in the American Journal of Political Science (@ajpseditor.bsky.social)! "Endogenous Opposition: Identity and Ideology in Kuwaiti Electoral Politics" explores how authoritarian elections generate opposition to incumbent autocrats. Link: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ukrer...

I feel like we'd at least warrant republic status.

Check out this awesome postdoc opportunity with my friend @jonathanpolk.bsky.social at Lund: lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/... So much great work to be done in this area and working with Jon would be fantastic!

Join us for this stellar panel on Russia's šŸ‡·šŸ‡ŗ deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦ children ā€” 10 am tomorrow šŸ‡³šŸ‡“ We will examine accountability under international law and provide a historical perspective on Russiaā€™s colonial policies. Welcome to ā˜•šŸ„Æ or follow the discussion online šŸ‘Øā€šŸ’»šŸ‘©ā€šŸ’»

I want to hear a lot more from JB Pritzker and AOC, and a lot less from Schumer and Jeffries

Norwegian scholars are particularly well represented in this issue! (not a complaint)

ā°One month left to submit panel proposals and paper abstracts for the DEMSCORE Conference 2025, June 9-10 in Gothenburg. šŸ“† Abstract and Proposal Submission Deadline: March 16, 2025 www.demscore.se/events/demsc... #PoliSky @ucdp.bsky.social @qoginstitute.bsky.social @vdeminstitute.bsky.social

Deadline end of this week. These are great jobs - take a peek if youā€™re on the academic job market and consider applying! If you have questions feel free to get in contact.

Democracy researchers please take note, and tell relevant colleagues: The Dep. of Pol. Sci. in Gothenburg is hiring a new Director for the V-Dem Institute. The Director will also serve as permanent (tenured) member of the Dep., with reduced teaching responsibilities during their tenure as Director.

Just published in the @ajpseditor.bsky.social. You have likely heard of the ā€œdictatorā€™s dilemma,ā€ in which repression reduces knowledge of discontent and thus loosens an autocratā€™s grip on power. But when does the dilemma hold? And what do dictators do to ease it? We have answers.

Filipe nails it. The Trump admin just forced the Justice Department to openly engage in corruption, and there is zero cost! No consequence! Trump is now stronger than he was a week ago. We now know more about what Congress will allow, and every Justice Department lawyer now knows what he can do

This is an amazing opportunity to work with excellent collaborators on absolutely crucial work!

The share of the world economy under regimes that rest on clientelistic political relationships and the use of public resources for political legitimationā€”in short, neopatrimonialismā€”has been increasing in this century.

This is going to sit with me for a long time

The Russian we should fear the most is not Putin, it's Ayn Rand. Though being very worried about Putin is still good policy.

I donā€™t know if Bluesky saying ā€œstop doing nothing, go there with a camera crew and objectā€ played any role in this, or if Democrats wouldā€™ve done it on their own regardless. But some went there with cameras, and people on here were right to urge them to (and to realize itā€™s far from a fix alone).

Thereā€™s a large chunk of the Dem Party that believes they lost in 2024 for defending unpopular minorities and not focusing on pocketbook issues enough. And they seem to believe that they can apply that lesson to the current democratic crisis. Itā€™s not only deeply cynical but wildly wrong.

I went to post about the National Japanese American Memorial in D.C., which is beautiful but usually missed by tourists. It is a deeply staggering admission of guilt and a warning to future Americans. I went to link to the inscriptions and- Well, they took the site down. www.nps.gov/places/japan...

Look, I am just a small town scholar of mass murder, so let me ask a simple, naive question: And then what?

šŸšØNew publication! We introduce the ā€œU-Turnā€ as a new regime transformation where autocratization is closely followed by and linked to subsequent democratization. Key findings: ā€¢ 52% of autocratizations become U-Turns, ā€¢ 73% when focusing on the last 30 years www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... šŸ§µ

Really interesting project!

How do autocrats stay in power? Our new research dives into the strategies of political controlā€”repression, co-optation, and indoctrinationā€”used across 229 autocracies from 1946 to 2010. What we found will change the way you think about authoritarian resilience. šŸ§µšŸ‘‡

My school @ucdpolitics.bsky.social has 2 positions (deadline Feb 21) one in Global Governance, one in Environmental Politics. They're called "Ad Astra Fellows" but between you & me they're basically tenure-track posts. It's a good deal. You get a PhD line & annual ā‚¬5000 research budget for 5 years.

Hello BlueSky, nice to meet you! The V-Dem Institute is an independent research institute and the Headquarters of the V-Dem (Varieties of Democracy) project, based at the University of Gothenburg, SE. The V-Dem project is a unique approach to conceptualizing and measuring democracy. #Polisky 1(3)

The owner of Twitter and richest man in the world is a Nazi. I would really appreciate it if world governments reacted appropriately.

Pretty much exactly 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz, the richest man in the world uses the Nazi salute at the inauguration of his close ally as US president. What should rationally not be surprising is still so deeply shocking and simply difficult to comprehend.
