Some Democratic member of Congress should propose a bill saying that a POTUS may golf at government expense no more than, say, once every 14 days, and must reimburse the Treasury for anything beyond that.

"Because of public skepticism, it is not settled science" just broke my brain. Needing better scicomm and needing to build public trust does not equal "unsettled" science

they're doing WMDs in Iraq but for Canada

Which is to say: putting the future of NASA and American space exploration/science in the hands of poorly led startups and sociopathic billionaires is not a strategy for lasting success. NASA has always relied on public-private partnerships but adults are not running these companies anymore.

Washington Post under Trump: "151,000 jobs is solid" Washington Post under Biden: "194,000 jobs is another weak month"

"To put it bluntly, get over the fear of being judged. It does not serve you in the political climate that we're in. Do not let the embarrassment of wearing the uniform keep you from joining the ranks of the revolution": harmonyk.substack.com/p/a-response...

If not russian asset then why russian asset shaped

It is always remarkable to me how so many on the left have internalized the Republican propaganda that government is bad. I'd love to see Democrats truly celebrate the specific ways that government makes our lives better, especially at the local level.

Interracial marriage did not cross 50% approval in the US until 1996, when I was 30 years old. Good political messaging drives opinion, it doesn't follow it.

i know some cis folks on here are at least kinda aware it’s bad right now for trans people in america, but sometimes it’s worth calling y’all back to 2016 when a single “transsexuals have to use the wrong bathrooms” bill cost north carolina the nba all-star game & $400 million. this is normal now.

you’re fired. wait you’re rehired. email us a list of things you’ve done today wait forget it you’re fired again. come back your job was important. you’re fired. or hired. come in to the office. wait the office has no computers go home. we are the department of government efficiency.

NEW SCOOP: Some staffers at Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency are drawing robust taxpayer-funded salaries from the federal agencies they are slashing and burning, WIRED has learned. ⬇️ Here's how much they're making:

can't believe it's 2025 and i'm stressed about tariffs and measles, like am i a character in an american girl book

The former head of the Social Security Administration says he expects the agency to miss on some payments over the next three months, interrupting some people's benefits, for the first time in Social Security's history of eight decades: www.cnbc.com/2025/03/01/d...

The Venn diagram of "men who fuel the trans panic re: women's sports" and "men who won't watch women's sports without insulting it" is a circle

Saw my first pro-measles disinformation post on FB today--a "health activist" account arguing that everyone used to catch measles back in they say and they were fine and natural immunity is best. I knew this was coming but it's still shocking to see.

this denial of empathy/shared fate is politically useful. consider how “the end of the pandemic” was produced—a combination of cutting public programs and resources and “you do you” propaganda that had people acting like other people masking somehow hurt them

i do find it weird how many 'elite, respectable' commentators feel the need to announce that they would have been a sexual predator in middle school, they just couldn't figure out how

A similar thing came up in podcast conversation I was on a few years ago. We love our stories and memorials about the world wars, but no stories and memorials for the Spanish flu--why? My argument was that we struggle to integrate pandemics into a national mythos. 🧵

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

This got a laugh out of me so bitter I can still taste it

Again, the richest man in human history personally individually directed this

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

The attack on DEI shows why liberals should stop arguing about "strategic" use of language forever. DEI stands for three uncontroversial virtues that most every American accepts, and the right still turned it into a vile slur. It doesn't matter what you say - they will poison it because YOU said it.

Here’s a letter George Dale wrote in 1927: (Great piece @dansinker.com )

Last thing, people don't actually know 'what will have an effect.' They simply do not. Do what you believe must be done within your capacity and do it with others. Be an agent rather than a pundit.

All the folks who exited NBC today. Seen together, hoo boy. Message received.

Some people will look at this and only see how foolish it is. But what it also is an attempt to set up a blameless, unaccountable arbiter by inserting automation into a “decision making” process. And tbh I wish more people at more news outlets would call that out.

This is EXACTLY what I told my partner they were going to do with those emails

“If you're in charge of something, draw the line now. It only gets harder later.” Can’t stress this enough. Every one of us has power and influence in some sphere. Could be big or small. In either case, it’s time to stand up for what’s right.

The populist far-right uses explicitly racist language in its campaigns and its voters report explicitly racist attitudes. It is brain dead to pretend racism has nothing to do with the rise of these parties.

i think this is basically what has happened a big chunk of the american pundit class

Just a joke, isn't just a joke. It's a ploy to sane wash fascism. As researchers who study discourse, we see this often when bad actors gets call out, it's their default refuge. They retreat there to fight another day, hoping the denial/non-denial will lull the masses to believe the danger is over.

"It's almost like watching state disintegration in real time."

I did notice that the email address is one that anyone could email

That's 9 tweets an hour (plus replies). This dude is allegedly running the world's 7th biggest company (by market cap) as well as like 6 other companies and completely overhauling the federal entire government. And high as a fucking kite the whole time.

Brilliant protest. Yosemite National Park workers hung an upside-down American flag — traditionally a symbol of distress or a national threat — thousands of feet off the ground on the side of El Capitan.

tbh it's a great prismatic look at the society. This is also why Elizabeth Holmes and SBF are the only big budget scamsters to head to and stay in jail. All 3 committed the only sin you cannot commit in the USA without swift & severe punishment- made a billionaire look bad and feel stupid in public
