it's really hard for people who experience shame to imagine what's possible by people who don't

NEW: How the Trump administration concealed its plans to remove hundreds of people under the Alien Enemies Act from the courts, from lawyers, and from anyone who could intervene to stop talkingpointsmemo.com/news/how-the...

The acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration admits he retaliated against the entire population of Maine—mostly newborn babies and their parents—because he thought the state’s governor had been rude to Trump in a White House meeting. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/24/u...

seems bad! www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

The more coverage a story gets, the more important readers think it is. So it matters when the NYT inflates flimsy Dem ‘scandals’ while downplaying real, criminal ones from Trump and Republicans. It’s not just bad judgment — it shapes public perception.

Would a headline ever, EVER have called this a “mishap” if it had been done under Biden or Obama? No, absolutely not. And, for bonus, a Susan Collins-esque “learned a lesson” quote from the president, treating his national security advisor like a chastened 7-year-old.

It should also be pointed out that this was the only time the Atlantic/Signal story was discussed on Fox News' most watched show today -- when the lone liberal injected it into the conversation. None of the show's topics were centered on the story, which was by far the biggest in DC today.

Ever since I wrote this piece after the election, organizations reach out to like "do you have time to talk about what we can do to support progressive creators?" I reply: I don't need an hour, they need money. Full stop. That's what we need. And just like that these orgs vanish!

13 days ago, I noted that the Trump administration had waived the criminal conflict of interest statute for 3 SpaceX employees whom Musk had placed at the FAA ... bsky.app/profile/kath...

To give a sense of how much money this is: according to CBO in 2023, non-defense discretionary spending was $917B. So the cost of running the entire federal govt, aside from SocSec, Medicare, Medicaid & defense was $917B. And in six weeks DOGE lit $500B on fire.

I built a Playstacean!

Fantastic read on Section 230 here. But also “Under Klobuchar’s proposal, [RFK Jr.] would literally have the power to declare pro-vaccine information as “misinformation” and force it off the internet” Seriously messed up stuff.

woman behind me keeps saying the word "fiduciary" on the phone and it's a little triggering, especially since twitter turned out to be the canary in the coalmine for executives myopically channelling their inner toads

i think about the movie American Factory daily. americans really do not appreciate the systemic advantages that let us be mediocre but yield outsize results

Painting a protest movement as intrinsically violent is the oldest trick in the book. It is the exact tactic that was used to try to discredit the civil rights movement.

Your reminder that #TeslaTakedown is a grassroots, nonviolent and peaceful protest. We do not condone violence or vandalism. And we recognize that all Tesla owners are not on the wrong side. Our tent is a big one. Join a protest now at Teslatakedown.com or organize your own!

This may sound fanciful, but it's actually validated by social scientific research. One study showed that, when given accurate descriptions of Republican fiscal policies, a significant chunk of voters simply refused to accept that these were their views. It just sounded too extreme.

Reports of travelers being questioned, detained or refused entry at U.S. ports of entry have emerged in recently as the Trump administration continues to tout a crackdown on illegal immigration. Here’s what to know about your rights at the U.S. border.

I am once again urging news organizations to learn the difference between questions and answers

There may be no one in the Democratic Party who speaks more eloquently to the spirit of the working class than AOC, yet for some reason centrist Dems who say "We need to speak to the working class!" see her and are like, "Well, not that way, I mean, uh, you know, maybe somebody else"

Pardons for the January 6 rioters, death to people who vandalize cars

The year is 2026. You have been arrested and exiled to a Mr Beast Content Zone where the Geneva Conventions do not apply

How firm is the hold of antivax beliefs? From the parents of the 6 year old unvaccinated child who died of measles: “Don’t do the shots,” the girl’s mother said. Measles, she added, is “not as bad as they’re making it out to be.” She noted that her four other children all recovered…

we have an utter fucking nimrod attempting to set himself up as dictator because for 50 years anyone who could have stopped him has dithered and procrastinated, hoping someone else would do it

Uh... what now?

If I give the bully my lunch money every day eventually he will die of old age

this stuff is happening across the country and even more intensively downstream of the veterans admin but it's happening in so many places at once and without any public notification that it's still only barely emerging in the news

On Tuesday I edited a story about the FTC firings. Readers took issue with our framing — not just us, but other publications as well. And you know what? Y'all were right. www.theverge.com/policy/63339...

AOC: What they like to call as radical, I believe is common sense. I believe that when a person gets sick, they shouldn’t go bankrupt in the wealthiest country in the history of the world. Common sense I believe that a minimum wage should cover the minimum cost to live. Common sense...

Not content to just hand over their own authority, and thereby expanding the powers of the executive branch, Musk is giving House Republicans incentive to help the Trump administration take a sledgehammer to additional parts of our system of checks and balances.

And add Canada to this growing list of countries issuing travel warnings for the U.S..👇

Every so often I look at the paper of record to see if it is quickly communicating to readers that they are living through a constitutional crisis, and the answer consistently is "no." They are covering the topics, but in the name of journalistic balance, not conveying the alarm.

This effort underscores just how many people drive illegally and increase the danger for everyone else on the road at any given moment in neighborhoods across the region. But it also shows that police are trying to do something about stopping it.

Antisemitism is structurally necessary to Elon Musk's politics, because his identity is rooted in being an underdog fighting against the real power, but as the world's wealthiest person, who is deeply politically connected, he needs a definition of elite not rooted in wealth or corporate ownership.

Jasmine Mooney, a Canadian national who appeared in “American Pie Presents: The Book of Love,” said she was put “in chains” after immigration officers on the U.S.-Mexico border flagged her work permit paperwork. Mooney said she was confined for two days in a small cell at a border station.

Seems bad.

This isn't anti-DEI - it's retelling history as a story with only white men in it. The tale of the Navajo Code Talkers is essential to understanding the Allies' victory in WWII. Removing it because the people involved were non-white is segregationism.

oh this is a big mystery

The word ‘pathetic’ doesn’t even begin to describe this.

Scientists have just cured pancreatic cancer in some patients with personalized mRNA vaccines. Pancreatic cancer. And this Trump administration wants to throw it all away. They’re throwing away a cure for cancer.
