What is a good indicator that a street design is not safe for bikes? I recently saw three Albany CA police officers on bikes riding on the sidewalk next to San Pablo Avenue near intersection with Dartmouth Street. Armed police officers in uniform, riding their bikes on the sidewalk. 🤷‍♂️

Bad news. Bus lanes work really well at reducing transit delays. Dammit. Fuck! Credit to @danp.net for making the real time transit data available to me.

What a headline. The AAA bike network will be finished for less than the cost of just the real estate purchases for widening Robie for one 900 meter car lane.

The old Home Hardware slogan “Home Owners helping homeowners” would be perfect for Toronto Council.

Councillor Trish Purdy is lamenting the massive cost of the AAA bike network, $66 million. $66 million is less than the annual cost of road maintenance, but not, apparently, a massive waste of $66 million.

"I biked when I was a kid/ my kids biked" is irrelevant. Kids haven't changed. Vehicles have. Back in the day, all vehicles had engine noise so you could hear an accelerating driver. Dashboards had buttons. No one had a smart phone. "Self driving" meant taking the bus. Hood height was low.

Funny story, I can remember when Halifax sold off all of its electric powered trolley buses to replace them with diesel powered buses.

Cleary just got a motion passed at TSC to get a staff report on maybe thinking about considering children in transportation infrastructure design.

What happened yesterday in Halifax's municipal politics? Two committee meetings! HRM is moving ahead with hydrogen busses and slowly making progress on police reform. Our editor @landofsticks.bsky.social has you covered in his latest over at www.grandparade.news

Alt headine: JOHN DeMONT: Has anyone else noticed that everyone is using the only transportation infrastructure we build?

This article fails to mention that congestion is the consistent imperically expected outcome of how city planners have designed and built the city.

Forget the Quebec City / Windsor corridor… A Vancouver to Halifax Shinkansen should be the goal 🤩

Vancouver council is debating a giant permanent sign that says "VANCOUVER", and staff say an issue is putting the sign in a place that won't interfere with film shoots. In other words, a giant "VANCOUVER" sign could interfere with vancouver's lucrative business of pretending to be any other city

Holy shit, the Board of Police Commissioners is doing due diligence. It's very boring.

The cherry blossoms are out in #Dartmouth.

Oh hey, it's Robie Street

Halifax's Road Safety Strategy (from reddit)

If you come to planning committee on a regular basis, you would be convinced that this article is not satire. www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/the...

New Woodside Ferry cancelations just dropped:

This would be about 100000 times more useful than finding some clown with a YT channel and force feeding him money till it pours our every orifice and still does bugger all for the party

Holding city council to account while standing in my kitchen making rhubarb candy. Modern life is truly a miracle.

The bus you don't ride because it's slow and unreliable can be powered by hydrogen.

*cough* Texas is more progressive than Nova Scotia on housing.

Wanderers fans, this spreadsheet is why we're not getting a stadium. Halifax's 5-year $1.8 billion capital plan, ~$642,784,405, or ~35%, is directly or primarily for automotive infrastructure. The city will only recoup $35 million (1%) of that cost from parking. You're driving on the stadium money.

When we stop calling road deaths "motor killings"?

I’m just over 6 minutes into this podcast and really glad that Matt had the same reaction to Councillor Kent’s ableist comment about power wheelchair users that get stranded when their chair breaks down in car-centric Halifax that I did.

oh

Ok, The Grand Parade may be my new fav podcast. I was swayed when @kwilsonhfx.bsky.social was on, but that councillor back n forth solidified it. @landofsticks.bsky.social 👏👏

If you ever said “wow libraries are great” then guess what? You support Canada Post, because they have a library shipping rate (reduced cost) and libraries use it a lot, to move books around and also spend more money on things like the collection you claim to love.

Between this and the family in Ontario, I'm starting to think that drinking doesn't really make driving more or less dangerous, but it does increase the frequency of drivers reaching the most dangerous points of driving's latent violence.

“It's not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. For me it's the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, and then asked me where you're going to put them.” — Mayor of Pontevedra, Spain (re-elected 6 times)
