I wish I had useful words to convey how important this is. Read it. Now.

The John Le Carré Advent Calendar - My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com Books. (with apologies to @realjohnlecarre.bsky.social and @harkaway.bsky.social)

literally every time I talk to friends

In 1970, John Boorman of Zardoz fame wrote a film treatment of LotR. It is a STINKER of a film, although there are some legitimately interesting ideas tucked into it. I read it so you won't have to! A🧵 of the best and worst pieces of John Boorman's LORD OF THE RINGS SCREENPLAY.

Definitely looking forward to reading this!

Morning

The evergreen argument annoying people like us digital rights activists have been making for decades to politicians is coming true: Imagine the power you just created being in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. What does it look like now?

A study of ancient DNA from people who lived in Europe between 1700 and 45,000 years ago suggests that 63 per cent of them had dark skin and 8 per cent had pale skin, with the rest somewhere in between.

I’m going to win…

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

I don’t believe in homeopathy, but still, I can’t help noticing the world’s been going to shit since they dumped Osama Bin Laden in the ocean.

This was great! 💔

Despite the fact that Reform MPs are always shouting about immigration, not one of them could be arsed to turn up for the debate on the Border Security Bill last night. Probably exhausted after a hard day cosplaying at being farmers.

we are depriving generations of kids of the formative experience of stumbling upon some weird horny sci-fi or fantasy book that was absolutely not written for them, which is the kind of thing that makes reading feel exhilarating, like you are unlocking the grownup world’s fun secrets

Vintage bluesky bullshit right here. Wonderful.

Anyone who happened to know that the White House would announce and then suspend tariffs within 24 hours just made a boatload of money.

Last year, law enforcement intercepted about 19 kilograms of fentanyl at the US-Canada border. At the southern border, agents seized 9,600 kilograms. The idea that Canada is a major source of drugs is a lie, and this admin is hoping you’re stupid enough to believe it.

my brother prices cannot go down without deflation that will gut the economy, it's wages that must go up

"Space is tough to get to, but once you’re up there, it’s a relatively benign environment.” The ocean is the opposite: it’s fairly easy to get to the bottom, but once you’re down there, “basically, everything wants to kill you” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A real environmental problem could be solved by science. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

I don’t usually do Black History Month (or any other month) because I’m too lazy. But with that hijo de puta in the WH things will be different. So, an occasional series for February. Squadron Leader Ulric Cross DSO DFC of Trinidad, Mosquito navigator in a PFF squadron, 80 ops over Germany/Europe.

The problem that businesses have is that both Tory and Labour governments seem to believe that a short opaque note published with no fanfare on the vast Gov.uk website is sufficient to magically convey something extremely important. There's no outreach being done. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

I have to wonder about Miliband putting solar panels on agricultural land. They are laden with toxins & all it would take is storm damage or fire to release them into the soil. Does the land then become completely unviable and get declared a brownfield site? www.sciencing.com/toxic-chemic...

Okay, sure, but this is the correct position. Snowden broke the law. Also: Some of what he disclosed should never have been secret. Some of the surveillance programs were unlawful. We should narrow the surveillance laws and strengthen whistleblower protections. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/01...

Was just disinvited by @bbc5live.bsky.social to a discussion of Brexit 5 years on- on the entirely reasonable/correct grounds that I know what I am talking about and would give an expert, objective view. What they actually wanted was a "hard Remainer" (to balance a know-nothing Brexiteer). FFS.

So, it’s time for all right-thinking English persons to stand and salute as we mark the 60th anniversary of the funeral of Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, a day the wily old bastard marked with his last joke: getting one over on the French even though he wouldn’t actually be there to see it happen

Please let me know if you know of anything else on social media being censored or delisted - I’m working on an archive of hidden/delisted/suspended content by state sponsored social media companies and documentation of when/how they were banned. Anything helps. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/23/t...

Extraordinary to live in a time where the arguments for sheer, unchecked executive power - once put forward by supporters of Charles I, James II and George III - are again part of everyday political discourse.

Colombia: We're not taking shackled detainees returned on military flights. Transport them with dignity Trump: Trade war! Colombia: OK Trump: Fine, no more shackled detainees returned on military flights Colombia: Good. Was that so hard? Trump: They gave in!

Trump’s anti-trans Executive Order is bad BUT it technically defines everyone as female. It states: “'Female' means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell." Since all fetuses "at conception" are female, Trump just defined EVERYONE as female.
