I've noted some of the procedural things Democrats could be doing in Congress, but this point from @edgeofsports.bsky.social's great piece in the Nation deserves emphasis. This is basic politics, and it's baffling that every Democrat isn't doing it every day. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Donald Trump is taking America out of NATO to join the Warsaw Pact. Well done, my Republican friends. You have no character, no conviction, and your legacy will be the betrayal of the Greatest Generation's sacrifice. You are a disgrace and will be remembered for who you are.

Thank you, @kylewilsontharp.bsky.social, for focusing on this problem.

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

🚨 SCOOP: DOGE is seeking personal taxpayer data at IRS, sources tell me. 🚨 Trump admin is pushing IRS to agree to an MOU that would give DOGE access to granular data on every taxpayer, business and nonprofit in the country.

As a political scientist who studies countries that managed to stop the slide into authoritarianism, I can assure you that ***refraining from provoking the authoritarian*** is not how it works. Without further ado, I will now go tear out another chunk of hair.

Yes. They are. Maybe a rapid response team under the age of 75 would be a start. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

Utter failure to grasp what we are facing www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/u... 1. People lack the framework to recognize an attempt to overthrow the constitutional order 2. The lack of elites *acting* like point 1 is true makes it illegible. Without Ds behaving as if it's a crisis, it's not a crisis.

If you’ve ever taken the oath to uphold the Constitution, this is the time to live up to it.

Dear Non-Fascist Europeans, The current US leaders believe they're allied with fascists inside your country against you, not allied with you against foreign invasion and threats to democracy. I'm sorry, I wish it weren't true, but it is. You really need to adjust. Sincerely, Non-fascist Americans

NEW: A memo obtained by @wired.com shows that CISA is reviewing every position related to election security & countering mis- and disinformation and frozen the agency's election security work. @ericgeller.bsky.social reports: www.wired.com/story/cisa-e...

This is a good idea. A daily Democratic press conference with a consistent, skilled spokesperson who covers two things: 1. What DOGE and the Trump administration did to the American people today 2. What Democrats are doing in response

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

FWIW, I appreciate he's here. But there's talking past each other on this. Could do much more, but granted at the end of the day they're the majority. True. But it's frankly about messaging. Doing a real complete dilatory blockade is, yes, optics, it's theatrics, it's narrative. And that matters.

The position I'd like to see House and Senate Democrats take is pretty simple: We refuse to cooperate with Republicans on anything until they stop breaking the law and trashing the Constitution. We want Musk out, DOGE dissolved, and the Trump administration complying with federal court orders.

One thing Democratic leadership could do right now is to name an alternate HHS secretary--someone to provide ongoing public updates and health information. And do it for other departments too. Start showing voters what a Democratic government would look like--press conferences, speeches, all of it.

An underrated virtue of all other presidents was that you could forget about them for weeks at a time

In conversations with smart scholars of political communication, there's a sense that there's far more that Dem lawmakers can do to highlight the threat to US democracy in this moment. If, as Axios reports, D lawmakers ARE annoyed at activist groups... they're missing the point and should read this:

BREAKING: France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain & UK sign a joint statement vowing to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty & demanding a role in the peace talks. This is leadership. It’s also unprecedented. A western alliance is having to form against a new, twin & united threat: Trump & Putin.

Every single person should be horrified and frightened by this. Like I said a month ago, keep some cash in your house. That goes for too NYC. And Baltimore. And Atlanta. And Chicago.

My list of lists of how to resist: www.headsupnews.org/p/what-you-c...

This, exactly. "Oh, it's just a little thing, we can do that. ... Well, this is a bit worse, but I guess we can go along with that too. .... Huh, this seems a lot but what choice do we have now?"

This also lets you comment, vigorously and at length, on the accuracy of, and motivations behind, Google's choices.

alright let's do this: call-your-reps scripts for people whose reps dgaf

Shame on you, Google.

Democrats should be responding to all this the way Republicans would respond if Clinton/Biden/Obama just capriciously decided to shut down the Department of Defense by fiat. It’s a 20 alarm fire and the Democrats are responding like it’s a single matchstick.

Do it.

Everyone have a good weekend? Okay, let's get back in it. Choose one place for your focus this week, one issue on the laundry list of horrors *where you can do something*. Then figure out how, and find people. It can be big or small (write a letter, make a call, organize a protest, offer shelter)

Hi Bluesky! Glad to be here.

Why aren’t Democrats doing interviews with patients enrolled in the cancer trials that Musk just cut funding for?

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

Ain't good. Compared to Senate Dems, House Dems have less leverage. One exception is the budget fight. But here's the Dem House Leader TODAY declining to use that leverage. If you have a Dem rep, ask them to use their leverage. And tell them to tell Jeffries to lead. Stay tuned - more to come.

To understand the faction leading America, recognize they think the worst, most terrifying things to happen in recent years are: 1) George Floyd protests 2) Public health treating COVID as real 3) HR saying "we've received complaints about your, um, 'jokes'" 4) Press 1 for English 5) Pronouns in bio

If Trump and Musk were trying to weaken the United States and sell it to its foreign enemies, how would they act any differently from the way they're acting now? Not at all, you say? Maybe you should wonder why that is.

Good morning! This incredible NYT op-ed by @katherinestewart.bsky.social needs to be the very first thing that you read today. The next thing to do is send it to all your friends who still don't believe Trump is a crisis. This lays it all out (gift link) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/o...

Was at an event in DC this evening with a lot of federal employees and it is absolutely wrenching to talk to people who dedicated themselves to public service work through the appalling attacks and uncertainty that they are facing now.

After 24 Senate Democrats joined all GOP to confirm climate denier Sean Duffy as Transportation Secretary, he illegally called for the shut down of the National Electric Vehicle Charging Program, established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

On the day after the election, I made a promise to the people of Illinois: when it comes to threats to our freedom, health, or security, if you come for my people, you come through me.

By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!

If you're wondering why congressional Democrats spent 3 months after the election rolling over and playing dead, it's because they were listening to these guys.
