Buying Hooters to turn it into the world's first pay-what-you-can food pantry with virulently sexual undertones.

Just now picking up my daughter’s Claudia’s Corgi, Gracie, from her spaying procedure from Friendship Animal Hospital in northwest DC. It turns out they are doing something amazing for people victimized by the insane government purges 👉

CNN: Do you think that calling Elon Musk "a dick" is effective messaging? Rep. Robert Garcia: "Well, he is a dick." I approve this message. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

my general take on nicknames for musk or trump: we don't live in a 60s mad magazine and anything you come up with is almost certainly cringe and the only question is whether you recognize that or not. I will tell you this: the trick to growing older gracefully is to not become a facebook grandparent

meanwhile, in the provost's office:

This is a great piece.

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

This is why they're attacking science and education: if you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.

Under fascism, no one is safe. Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc. Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations. Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.

I don’t have to fend off the desire to comply in advance. Anyone who knows me knows that, fortunately or unfortunately, I would rather die than let someone I don’t respect tell me what to do.

I'm struck by the near-total failure of leadership across civil society, in a country that fetishizes the concept. Whole sections of leadership books at every bookstore. Named, endowed "leadership" institutes and curricula across higher ed. Awards and special recognition for "leaders." AND YET

Girding myself for four years of “call your representative and tell them not to just sit there, staring blankly into orange headlights, as the country is dismantled from within”.

The fact that this exists around us but we got stuck on this stupid planet with a bunch of man babies trying to work out their grievances is just so annoying.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

Happy 5th "Large boulder the size of a small boulder" anniversary! #Geology ⚒️

I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

The speed with which companies are abandoning DEI is a clue about how shallow their commitment to it ever was.

What actual "war" has the US "won" in the last 3 generations? I'll wait.

For @slate.bsky.social I wrote about why I'm suddenly scared to read the news (even though writing it used to be my full-time job). But this piece is also about how we might reevaluate for the better our relationship to news — and to the act of living — under Trump 2.0 slate.com/life/2025/01...

seems fine

@teenvogue.bsky.social please consider “verifying” the bluesky way. bsky.social/about/blog/4...

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce. Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.

I’m just going to say that AOC is the acting leader of the Democratic Party until someone proves otherwise. At least insofar as she is responding to the moment with leadership.

What are you going to do? Save your money? For the Future?! store.theonion.com/p...

I didn’t really post on tik tok, but I learned a lot from folks about my neurodivergence, perimenopause, parenting, mental health healing, rebuilding my self worth from how damaging the patriarchy is, anti racism, about the issues trans people face, etc. It gave voice to those people and topics …
