Recent English lit PhD thinking about the intersections of pop culture & violence against women. I love cats, romance novels, pop music, and buying too many planners.

Katie Deane, a PhD student at the University of Birmingham (UK) has a survey she'd be grateful if #romancelandia could help with.

So it goes without saying, but let's say it anyway: the concentration of attacks on trans people isn't because trans people are the only people fascists hate (although they absolutely do hate them). It's because they're the people they think non-fascists are least likely to defend.

It’s so devastating to watch Depp v. Heard happen over and over again, pushing more women into conservatism and damaging the cultural narratives around sexual harassment, violence, and abuse each time open.substack.com/pub/taylorlo...

"The left is too obsessed with terminology"

Having police in schools does not keep children safe. Police do not prevent gender-based violence.

“Older women never win Best Actress” like be so for real right now. If you think Demi should have won bc you preferred her performance, that’s fine! But she didn’t lose bc she’s older than Mikey Madison! Anora clearly had momentum behind it and it’s rare to win Best Picture without an acting award.

I've been reading Harlequins for 25 years - I'm a trope junkie. The problem with genre publishing right now (IMHO) is authors and publishers thinking trope is all they need - never mind the pesky details like character development, compelling conflict and an actual plot.

This was mainly called for by Black clergy and they know how to organize so it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Watching the Ruby Franke docuseries and holy shit this is awful. Even if she hadn’t been so horribly physically and emotionally abusive, just constantly recording her kids and getting angry when they didn’t want to be filmed is so fucked up.

Last night’s White Lotus was my least favorite so far, but the entire snake show scene was incredible. Also all of the facial expressions being made by Carrie Coon and Michelle Monaghan when realizing who their friend voted for… great work.

Best dressed: Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Halle Berry, Demi Moore, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Colman Domingo Worst, because it was the most disappointing: Mikey Madison. It ended up being her big night and she wasn’t dressed for it!

I def would’ve been very happy for Demi Moore to win but I was honestly blown away by Mikey Madison in Anora, and really did not expect her to win, so I’m more than okay with this.

"Our film has the power to change the hearts and minds of people. I hope it gets seen by millions of people in the US." NO OTHER LAND, an urgent, undistributed exposé of Israel's war crimes in the occupied West Bank, has won the Oscar for best documentary feature: www.rogerebert.com/interviews/b...

Having watched only four of the Best Picture nominations, my top pick is Anora (controversial, I know). But let’s be honest here: my real passion and opinions are saved for Oscars fashion.

People assume Andrew Cuomo is tough and A Fighter because he always looks angry and acts weird. Mistaking a total lack of emotional self-regulation and wild, self-destructive spite for Masculine Strength is one of the defining political errors to me. No one even tries to keep it together anymore.

“With AI you never have to draw, paint or write again!” Why does that prospect excite you? We were put on this earth to think and create. Some people are so eager to be liberated from joy.

Rape and support for rapists are now key aspects of U.S federal government policy. www.theguardian.com/news/2025/fe...

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

today is a good day to donate to an abortion fund. if you don’t know which one, donate to the national network of abortion funds (abortionfunds.org) you can also explore their website for funds in every state.

How awful. I don’t think I ever realized how much she was a part of my childhood—from Harriet the Spy to Pete & Pete to Buffy to Gossip Girl. She should’ve have many more years ahead of her.

I would like to see ANY of the pundits and intellectuals who've spent the last decade pissing and moaning about cancel culture dedicate at least 1/100th of that energy to the ongoing explicitly identity-based purges at the behest of professional propagandists, but I'm not holding my breath.

I’m giving every single established actor who’s taking a role on the new H/rry P/tter show the BIGGEST side eye

The Hollywood Reporter's latest cover story paints Justin Baldoni as a hug-happy little lamb whose religion and we-are-one view of the world means maybe he just didn't understand that he was being a creep. www.jezebel.com/he-who-is-fe...

Everyone I watched White Lotus with is convinced the killer this season is a monkey with a gun, a gunkey if you will

Finally started this season of The White Lotus and, as usual, what a cast! But I am so far particularly charmed by Walton Goggins being grumpy and mysterious in his slutty barely-closed Hawaiian shirts, while Aimee Lou Wood adorably bosses him around.

Read this series! It’s fantastic!

“I just wanna say trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans, a letter on a passport can’t change that, and fuck this administration.”

MTC March Reading: in association with our upcoming forum on romance, we will be reading Alexis Hall's A LADY FOR A DUKE, a queer historical romance. Our romance forum explores what romance, as a genre, offers its readers. How better to dive into that question than to read some romance ourselves!

Milchick might be Severance’s Cersei Lannister: a flawed, fascinating, complicated, and terrible person with moments of shocking vulnerability, played by an actor giving the most iconic, cuntiest performance on the whole show.

NEW: Pregnancy became far more dangerous in Texas after the state banned abortion, according to ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis, which found the sepsis rate for women hospitalized as they miscarried in the 2nd trimester shot up by more than 50%. https://propub.li/43487Tj

Saw a production of Julius Caesar a few years back where Caesar was wearing a red ball cap the whole time. Just thinking about that for no reason.

How much of hate directed at "leftists" is really just at the fact that the Internet sucks? The "left" gets blamed for cancel culture, but a mob's ability to harass a person out of public is non-partisan, and currently well embodied by Musk's Twitter.
