this piece is a mix! the CZs are bought, the black jade at the top i cut from rough rock, and the pietersite i bought as a cab at a show years ago but i hated the way the guy cut it so i completely re-cut. it’s definitely more tedious but i have so much more control as a result!

thank you so much! it’s such a cool stone, there’s a chatoyancy in the chalcedony (say that ten times fast) that is so beautiful and difficult to capture. i can’t wait to set everything and get the metals polished up

that makes total sense. i wonder what specifically develops to make the color change? like, at a cellular level? so many questions!

good idea! i’ve definitely reached out to UF spider scientists in the past to get questions asked and they’ve been both helpful and charming. i should also drag out the textbook under my bed. we’ll see what i find out!

i wonder why it doesn’t all happen in one molt. too much expenditure of resources perhaps to both develop and harden in one go plus then produce spermwebs?
yes, “spider sex” has really thrown off my YT algorithm in the past lol

oh yes that part i know! i just wonder about the actual physical changes. are the color shifts in the pedipalps between penultimate and final molts indicative of changes in the chitin & protein? are they strictly about signaling to the female that reproduction is possible? etc etc

this is incredible

ok FASCINATING. so boxing gloves start in the penultimate molt but darken in the final molt? do we know why? (i feel like probably not, anytime i try to ask hyper specific spider q’s there’s just not enough info!)
i inherited a mm avic avic & his tibial hooks were so cool! lasted about 6 mos w me

do they have other changes in their final molt too? thanks for the info!!

this fallout happened on discord; mod accused me of rule breaking & dumped me from the server, then retconned story to say i had broken rules 2x (been unkind, given vet advice) it was really disheartening
do these help? does the whole thing go darker? (i keep tarantulas mostly, hard to miss hooks)

They want you stuck, with all your attention and energy in the circle of concern. They want you to forget about your circle of control. They don't want you expanding into your circle of influence.
By all means, post. Just don't stop there. Do what you can, even if it feels small. I promise it's not.

i got into a tiff with the mods of the tarantula and spider subreddits which got me kicked off the discord permanently so i can’t confirm my ID but inaturalist seems to agree so i’m sticking with it. if you know better than me, pls inform me tho!!

i think he’s a mature male because of the size of his pedipalps. when male spiders mature, they emerge from their final molt with physical changes, often including “boxing glove” pedipalps, which are copulatory organs that hold their sperm

IT IS YOUR JOB TO FIGHT WITH YOUR VOICE AND YOUR BODY. IT WILL BE SCARY. THERE WILL PROBABLY BE REPERCUSSIONS. DID YOU THINK PROTECTING DEMOCRACY WOULD BE EASY?

last week i confronted a man who tried to take photos of my service dog without my permission and i put my body on the line when he tried to come after bc that kind of ableism is unacceptable towards me or any other disabled person.

yesterday i called out a company for unnecessary sex documentation in their website registration. my sex has nothing to do with buying metalworking equipment. guess what? they removed the buttons from the registration website.

i say this as someone who DOES THIS SHIT in real life. second week of february i started a big ol’ scuffle in the middle of a bunch of rich fucks who dared to make a racist joke about michelle obama in front of me. my whiteness protected me AND made it my job to be loud about it.

this, by the way, goes for EVERYBODY doomscrolling tonight. guess what? you hear casual racism, you call it out. you see someone participate in ableism, you call it out. you watch someone be dragged out of a town hall by brown shirts you put your body on the line to stop it.

i am really hoping it cuts down on some of the harassment we experience (in part because he is so small and doesn’t fit the traditional idea of a service dog) but i also know… most people don’t know how to interact with service animals. which is to say again: DON’T.

SO MUCH THIS.
like good lord y’all they are still SMALL WOLVES. do you know what a dog can do to you? cuz i do! you are a fragile skinsuit made of exactly the kind of meat their teeth can rip!

one would think and yet! and as usual how deeply unsurprising that a man would react with fury when called out for behaving without someone else’s consent. people are wildin’ out there
