being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

"We wanted to see Hayes electrical substation which is famous not just in Europe, but in the whole world"

In the 48 hours since the new Road Harm Reduction Strategy was adopted, on days 231 & 232 of the road safety emergency, two pedestrians have been killed in collisions. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the families and communities impacted by these horrible crashes. Everyone should get home safely.

The UK has now issued a travel warning for the US: possible arrest or detention for failing to meet entry requirements.

Every person on Bluesky should know: * Every post on Bluesky is PUBLIC forever * Every post on Bluesky is archived by ICE, NSA, and many other agencies * Even if you delete a post, it’s already been captured * Judges don’t care if you were “kidding” or being ironic www.404media.co/the-200-site...

100%. Deliberate, bold, leadership. What we need now everywhere in cities.

Five things you might not know about PIP and a thread. 1) PIP is not a ‘benefit’ of disability, it’s welfare support to cover the additional costs of living with chronic illness or disability - medicine, transport, therapy, specialist equipment (and no, not all of these are available on the NHS)

Take a moment to think about what could replace these bollards. There's one simple answer... In many cases, street trees could be planted where bollards are placed and provide a wealth of benefits to local people 🌳🌲

Cutting disabled people's benefits won't remove their disability and it won't help the economy. The NHS, which has long been a social care system and welfare service on top, will now also be forced to manage even more of the effects of poverty and crisis. There's no cost saving and no logic here.

The welfare cuts have the potential to do to Labour what tuition fees did to the LD’s. The betrayal some will feel will run deep and wont be forgiven. The whole way it’s been handled seems chaotic to me.

I’ve emailed my MP. It takes two minutes to do the same.

A reminder that Labour's Manifesto made two promises to tax the super rich and in Government it broke them both. Indeed, it actually cut taxes for some in private equity. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Anyway back to knitting 🧶 Really excited about the new Laine book. 52 Weeks of Scrap Yarn. U.K. knitters can pre-order it here. treasuremodernknitting.co.uk/products/pre...

What’s really become clear since the weekend is the Health Secretary thinks our disabilities are over diagnosed and the Works and Pensions Secretary thinks we’re just not disabled enough to be worthy of any support.

Wow, there really is no such disappointment as voting for Labour and getting Reform Lite.

Look at this extraordinary outcome from the Citizens' Assembly 🙌 Such support buses, cycling, walking, safer roads, and a car free city centre. oxfordclarion.uk/citizens-ass...

Oxfordshire CC just ran a Citizen’s Assembly on traffic. Key conclusions: 88% support for "Make the city centre car free" 82% support for "Introduce a graduated Work Place Parking Levy" 74% for "Implement a congestion charge in addition to the Zero Emission Zone."

This would only save £5 billion. Raising fuel duty by a penny would raise a similar amount. People can choose to drive a little less and more carefully. Disabled people don't have that luxury www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

“The sound of traffic has the greatest impact on health because so many people are exposed to it.” How our noisy world is seriously damaging our health www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

#showmeyourknits Green theme. A Tecumseh by Caitlin Hunter from 2019. I used all plant dyed yarn from Hey Wolf Mama in Germany. Ironically this has become my gardening jumper - its ability to withstand pricks from roses and brambles without a blemish is second to none. 🧶

The UK is ground down & people are angry after over a decade of austerity. We voted for change last year, & economic & social renewal, not more of the same. Reeves’ support for Tory rules will undo her & open the door to fascism. This will be unforgivable. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Come and say hello and chat about any ideas you have for improving Birmingham’s streets

Today!

If only politicians and policy makers were aware of this research showing: “motorists underestimate the full private costs of car ownership, while policy makers and planners underestimate social costs”. Car use means high costs and inactive lives. 🤷‍♀️ -/- www.lunduniversity.lu.se/lup/publicat...

Once again for the love of god just put taxes up, you'll have to anyway before this parliament is out so do it now, cite defence as the reason, lean into the fact the world has changed & govt must too. (Me and @johnharris1969.bsky.social discussed this on the Guardian Politics Weekly pod btw..

I just signed the petition to to demand the Government tax the super rich to rebuild our NHS, schools, and other public services. Will you sign too? you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ta...

No two ways about it - cutting welfare will send more people into poverty, and many more deeper into poverty. We have one of the least generous welfare systems in the world - which is why we have millions of people queuing at food banks. We should be increasing welfare not cutting it.

The modular nature of Dutch streets—precast bricks, pavers, and curbs—transforms every infrastructural upgrade into an opportunity for a liveability upgrade. In Delft, scheduled sewage pipe replacement on Eliza Dorus- and Anna Beijer-straten allowed for the creation of woonerven ("living streets").🧵

How can #councils and planners create healthier places? This practical new guild from @qualityoflifeuk.bsky.social shows how #DesignCodes can provide a framework for healthy place-making. it's free - do take a look!

Tesla stock is now down 1/3rd in a month, and lower than before the election. This matters for 2 reasons: 1. It's hilarious 2. Musk is very (for a billionaire) cash poor. Most of his assets are tied up in shares, and so there is non-hypothetical price point where he will be forced to sell X

People snarking about the #sophiescarf. It‘s a really accessible way for people to get into knitting and make their first project. I’m delighted every time I see one, honestly. 🧶
