it's been said before but the dividing political line for me is between people who hate these fucking fascists and people who don't. whether you're a normie dem or a hard leftist, if hating these fucking people isn't core to your politics, you're useless. if it is--then yeah, we can work together.

“Despair is a lie. It says that we know for certain that nothing will ever get better. Not only is that not something anyone can know, all the evidence of modern human history strongly contradicts it.” www.liberalcurrents.com/the-case-aga...

for what it is worth, trump II also really has convinced me that US hegemony is probably bad for America in and of itself. there needs to be credible consequences for electing a Mad Emperor again

100%. Conflict in general is becoming about domestic political friction. I can think of another example within our own coalition over the past year

Every mainstream attempt to grapple with the rise of Tate and other misogynist ideologues have posed them as a product of men’s despair. Few have posited them as an assault on women’s safety and dignity.

Yes! Because ultimately Trump’s strength - his ONLY political strength, I’d argue - is that at heart he’s a PERFORMER, and he is at all times keenly aware of the crowd and how they’re reacting. It’s the instrument he’s playing.

my reasonable centrist betters tell me that it is ridiculous to suggest that the trump administration is filled with segregationists but here again they are forcing out a high-ranking, high-preforming black woman for reasons www.reddit.com/r/fednews/s/...

zelensky has more guts than every reporter in washington and if they had any sense of dignity they would kill themselves

No, the meeting did not go badly for Ukraine. It exposed in the most undeniable, unequivocal way possible the pro-Putin commitments of the president and vice president. That was information Americans and allies needed to have clear before them.

he's really so stupid and I can't stand it. if you warmed up mars and melted the water, the water would evaporate into space. Mars can't have a habitable atmosphere in its current state bc it has no magnetic field. solar winds strip away everything that isn't stuck to the surface.

the arc of history is long. it's long as hell. it's just—whew. it's a long-ass arc, is all I can tell you.

systematically going around breaking shit the government needs to work is a form of civic education for low-engagement voters whose effects will outlast this administration

Good. Fuck them. They're going to have to fight on against an unjust "peace" deal that will provide neither security nor justice while pillaging Ukraine. Shameful that as with Gaza, the US is shoulder to shoulder with the genocidal tyrant whose military forces seek to destroy an occupied people.

I don't think America can return to *exactly* where it was (our position was too path-dependent from WWII to fully recovery), but the idea that America is doomed to be a despotic minor power is obviously wrong

good piece. I think the perspective of this guy--feeling awkward and uncomfortable with trans issues but coming around when meeting them personally--describes a lot of people www.thebulwark.com/p/transgende...

everything you need to know about "savvy" political journos you can learn by how they reacted to Trump saying on abortion, "there has to be some kind of punishment for the woman" in 2016. Covered it as embarrassing for Trump - because he didn't know the correct lie that Republicans tell.

The embrace and protection of Andrew Tate at the highest level of US government tells you everything you need to know about this rotten administration. They worship at the altar of abusing women and girls. Their version of morality supports sex trafficking under the guise of camming

you know they know how completely fucked they are legally by the way none of them want to admit theyre in charge

this is why i think putting hundreds of thousands of federal workers and contractors out of work in a shaky job market and a trembling economy is a catastrophic regime mistake

likewise a huge reason the 2020 protests got so huge was that people were desperate for connection and a sense of agency after years of Trump and months of lockdown

hey guys I'm trying to establish right-wing dictatorship in a wealthy, diverse, and relatively robust democracy. the ideal political economy for my project is one in which I've picked fights with the military and professional classes and strapped a ticking time bomb to Wall Street, right?

Richard M. Nixon was the first truly democratically elected president of the United States is a historical fact and also one that should cause one to drink

said this before and i wasn't exaggerating: RFK has the exact personality type of the kind of person that, in a different sort of regime, oversees mass starvation.

To repeat myself: this is important to understand both because a) there is a very American model of authoritarianism far likelier to shape our future than Nazism and b) there are models to learn from in what bringing down that authoritarianism looks like

the only extremely funny thing about this history is that George Fitzhugh, author of Cannibals All, a pro-slavery tract, spent a huge amount of space rhapsodizing about a British article positively comparing American slavery to the plight of the British poor, not realizing that it was satirical

it is just completely insane how common the idea that a politician is not obligated to resign their office when they are unable to carry out its duties is on the center-left

The point of the "Let the Democrats leave and vote again when they're not looking" plan was to prevent swing-distinct Republicans from having to take an awful vote that'd hurt them bad next year. Democrats successfully foiled that plan and those Rs all had to vote to cut Medicaid.

when i say that most of the people willing to fill a mass grave consider the mass grave to be the ends and the ideology which justifies it to be the means, this is what i mean.

Emphasizing again that anyone who responds to "that's illegal" with some variant of "lol all law is meaningless you're a sucker for thinking that matters" is actively doing PR for Trump and helping him. Nihilism about the law is the best way to make sure that the rule of law dies a quicker death.

It's astonishing to see this take over and over. It's literally impossible to dismantle all the institutions and also hold on to power, that's just not how it works.

probably the clearest example progressives had of a rising star out of the whole freshman class, obvious choice

Yes I want to stress in case it wasn't clear: the reason I despise the "men become fascists because they don't have nice wives" argument is first and foremost because it is implicitly an argument for state-mandated rape

What happens when the SSA closes field offices? *People have a harder time getting access to services that they are eligible for because of crowded offices. *People with more severe disabilities, lower income and lower education are most adversely affected. www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

i was just reading an article last night about *multiple* congressional republicans being upset about this kind of dehumanizing shit directed at federal workers from musk (because they're hearing it from constituents), and trump's now tripling down on it directed at all americans

right! one underdiscussed thing about 2024 is the extent to which the Republican Party _is_ Elon Musk and no one else: small donors dried up almost entirely, and large donors stopped giving.

I love leaving voice mails for my senators where I say things like "the USPS is very important to our country" as if I'm helping a small child with a book report or describing our civilization to an alien

[kicking, screaming, pissing, throwing up] the last decade saw the neoliberal wing of the national party left bleeding out in an alley, then the inflation reduction act put a bullet in it just for good measure the blue line is stimulus on neoliberalism, the red is stimulus on new deal liberalism

the entire thing about trying to convert reactionaries rather than liberals is that they would rather pursue people repulsed by their reasonable politics rather than people repulsed by their awful personalities

writing an email to a member of the Russian Duma so that the trans analyst reading it at NSA knows i support them
