Day 2 at the Tsuzuraozaki site. Fixing the anchor is taking a bit of work as usual, but it's hard to complain about the view :) #archaeology #Japan #LakeBiwa 🏺

Day 2 on the north end of Lake Biwa to investigate the Tsuzuraozaki site. Almost no wind, but we do have a teensy bit of snow.... #archaeology #Japan #LakeBiwa

Working through some choppy water we made it out to the site. Due to some delays & a bit of bad luck we weren't able to identify any artifacts today, but we at least got both ROVs in the water, one of which was student-built! Hopefully we'll have better luck tomorrow! #Japan #Biwa #archaeology #ROV

Getting to do a bit of archaeology 🏺 on a boat for the next couple of days. Headed to the north end of Lake Biwa now where hopefully the weather will be ok 🀞🀞 If it's too windy we'll have to cancel for the day.

Had mentally blocked out the grind of processing these little sherds. Just a couple cm across and only a few mm thick makes alignment less than fun. Similar to scanning a coin, but with a less interesting result (sorry). 🏺#archaeology #photogrammetry #3D #Japan #Jomon

A potent and constant reminder even for those of us who work in places and times without many texts: every buckle, every faint outline of a building doorway, every carefully-butchered bit of animal bone, every burial. These were all evidence of humans who lived and loved.

ESRI is updating their basemaps automatically to incorporate The Gulf of America starting tomorrow 2/20. Unrelatedly, here's a workflow that you can use to manually edit your vector basemap labels: www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/...

Doing a bit of pottery sherd scanning today. These pieces didn't have clear locations noted when excavated. I can't align them with the excavation scans, but we may be able to refit them with the rest of the pot. Teeny ones are a no go, but I'll give the rest a shot #archaeology #Jomon #Japan #3D

This is an neat course by @bruno-simon.bsky.social for learning Three.js that I've been working through slowly. I've really enjoyed the structure & how the system is set up. There's a 50% off coupon out now & I'm tossing it out here so it doesn't go to waste. threejs-journey.com/join/valdfb3...

A quick afternoon project for 'Egyptian Day' at my kiddos school 😺✨ β€’ MyMiniFactory for #3D print file. β€’ Combined some of my scans in @blender.org, export GLB. β€’ Optimise GLB using @rapidpipeline.bsky.social. β€’ Sketchfab for online 3D hosting, #AR & #VR. β€’ NFC Tools to encode NFC tag. #GLAM3D

I promised more Jomon spouted vessels, so here's a new one for the artifact of the week. The cord marked patterning, for which the Jomon culture was named, is quite clear on this piece. It's from Towada city in Aomori & dates to the Late Jomon period (~2500-1000yrs ago). #Japan #archaeogy #Jomon 🏺

Just because it's difficult to remove parts of Google from your life doesn't mean you shouldn't try, & definitely doesn't mean you shouldn't search "Google alternatives" or other similar search phrases repeatedly to spike search results and send the message that they're making mistake after mistake.

Headed home after a great set of presentations by Nichibunken professors on the FX series Shogun. Prof Cryns talked about the historical context of the show & his role as historical advisor, Prof Screech covered the history of William Adams, & Prof Ota discussed the show in a broader media context πŸ‘

Snowy day in Kyoto

Thought I'd share what I've been up to when not doom scrolling lately. I really like how this digital pottery refitting is coming along, but it's really tedious yet labor intensive work. If anyone has tackled something like this & has some tips, I'm all ears! #Jomon #archaeology #3D #Blender

Ask yourself what you’d think about another country if a new regime quickly prohibited all government agencies from communicating with the public, then began deleting data from government websites that it deemed unacceptable.

Well that's fun. While Sketchfab still doesn't have much in the way of details regarding what will happen to cultural heritage 3D models that aren't for sale as they transition over to Fab, that still won't keep them from charging another 12 months of service without any prior notification...

Some good news for the artists out there: OpenAI considers Glaze and Nightshade, tools that can poison their training models, to be _abuse_. That's right. OpenAI, the company that steals other people's art, thinks that artists trying to protect their works from being stolen is abuse. That's […]

Setting up a new laptop and spotted this sneaky/dirty little move. Opting out of tracking for advertising is hidden by a single scroll down option that's easy to miss. The scroll bar isn't even present unless you're moving the cursor over it. Pretty crappy Microsoft....

I guess I don't always understand art museums and how they deal with archaeology. The Met has a big old display of beautiful Acheulean handaxes and Paleolithic tools... in the arms and armor gallery. πŸ€”

Always interesting to see ways in which Jomon period artistic expression appear in modern works. This piece is part of a series titled "Venus" by Megumi Murai, and is displayed at the Najomon museum in Niigata prefecture. #Jomon #Japan #archaeology #art

I ditched Facebook ages ago, but the way that disconnected me from family, friends, & a broader audience has me considering going back from time to time. Each time I start to seriously consider it, they do something horrible like dropping fact checking... www.forbes.com/sites/zakdof...

Pretty decent snow for Kyoto #Ritsumeikan #Kyoto #Japan #snow

Offline for a couple days, so here's an early release of the Jomon artifact of the week! This squat little buddy is a flameware bowl from the Umataka site in Niigata prefecture. It dates back to the Middle Jomon period, around 5000 years ago. #Japan #Jomon #archaeology

I started a feminist anthropology started pack. Let me know if you want to be added. Please share go.bsky.app/KdiCNZF

Jomon artifact holiday post 2024! While there weren't any jingle bells around during the Jomon period, there were bell-shaped clay objects like these from the Oyu site in Akita prefecture. They date back to the Late Jomon (~4000 yrs ago) with ~190 recovered from the site 🏺 #Jomon #Japan #archaeology
