At the moment I’m in survival mode and don’t have much mental or physical energy for much. Haven’t been in the studio in ages. Maybe as spring comes and I start teaching again I can work up the motivation.

No. I went to a private Christian school although I now consider myself agnostic.

I grew up in Grand Rapids and actually went to high school with one of Betsy DeVos’s kids although he was younger so I didn’t know him. The whole town seemed owned by the DeVos’s and Van Andel’s in the 80s and 90s.

They told me today that they enjoy talking to me. I figure we’re pretty okay as parents.

A pair of ravens was preventing a bald eagle from getting at the duck it had killed. Drama on the river’s edge.

My 11 species today puts me at number 15!

I’m number 29 in the Edmonton region. Not bad for someone who only started eBird at the end of 2023.

This year meaning 2024. Still not ready for 2025.

I think I got 174 this year for the Edmonton area.

I know for many it is filled with anxiety, fear, anger, pain, and grief as well as excitement, love, and joy. So let us all extend Sterkte to each other as we muddle through life.

It’s a simple word and could come off as trite but somehow spoken in Dutch it takes on so much more meaning and support. So to all on this New Year’s Day I wish you Sterkte in the year to come.

And you would have missed the white throated sparrow and brown creeper if I hadn’t been with you.

It’s a big crossbill year. Saw about 40 in Goldbar the other day with Klaas.

I currently have the top species count for this month in Gold Bar on eBird, 37. The Long Tailed Duck has been eluding me though.

I heard a saw whet the other day but didn’t see it.
