New study from IIHS shows that car bloat is dangerous even at low speeds: If hit by a sedan going 27 mph, a pedestrian has a 60% chance of a moderate+ injury and 30% chance of a serious one. If it's a pickup going 27 mph, those odds rise to 83% and 63%, respectively. www.iihs.org/news/detail/...

The City of Ottawa will hold a byelection in Osgoode Ward to replace George Darouze, who became the MPP for Carleton after last week's Ontario election. www.ctvnews.ca/ottawa/artic...

I keep a list of city councillors and the Mayor that I update when new ones join at bsky.app/profile/did:... if that's helpful for anyone. I think it's currently up to date.

200 Elgin is being converted from office->residential, and the floorplans are... Bad. Deep, narrow, dark apartments made worse by mandatory inset balconies (as per Ottawa's zoning bylaw). Random columns everywhere. Small and few windows. Is this really the best we can do?

This a great moment to remember and highlight the fact that the state is utterly necessary, that it can do big, bold, necessary things to help people.

Through it all, I promise one thing: to only ever get weirder and more alienating.

An incredibly easy, mostly symbolic test and a majority of city council failed it.

A tale of two councilors.

There’s a lot of answers here and surprisingly few of them is that “the Government of Ontario owns a very large amount of power generation and transmission assets and can simply tell its own businesses to do things”

Traditions, vibes, or worse!

Did you know the CBC was started by a Conservative? In 1935, faced with the growing dominance of American media within Canada (sound familiar?) then Conservative Prime Minister R. B. Bennett, announced the creation of the CBC. He declared: “We will show the United States we are not an appendage.”

I just saw a post on Reddit from someone upset that there were people using drugs the Scotiabank ATM at Somerset and Bronson. The Somerset West Community Health Centre just closed its supervised consumption site on Friday, after being forced to by the Ford government. Decisions have consequences.

Consider what it'd take for you to see yesterday as a vigorous defence of American interests. You'd have to believe Zelenskyy is a global villain, basically. This is abominable, of course. But Trump's bloc believes it. The point being: They can be made to believe almost anything about us, too.

Hear me out: it’s time for America to be sealed under a giant mysterious dome

The evening's TV. It's real good.

Many of you were shocked by the idea of a vaccine denier heading the national health department, but many US planning departments are run by people who do not believe that building more housing will improve affordability—essentially the same thing.

St. Laurent snow dump looking pretty full

Toronto's 1970s Reform movement saw these buildings - which provide good housing for a million people - as the enemy. It's time to reconsider their ideas.

The vast majority of the cost of this project stems from Council's refusal to allow general traffic lanes to be repurposed as bus lanes. Baseline is already 4 lanes across, and rather than repurposing 2 of them we must *add* 2 more, at incredible cost.
