Boycott!

Large federal workforce firings began at the National Weather Service on Thursday. The weather service budget is roughly $1.4 billion, about $4 for the average taxpayer. According to a 2024 report, weather service forecasts provide an estimated benefit of $102.1 billion to the U.S. public.

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

Elon Musk Suggests He Alone Decides What Gets Funded in the Government gizmodo.com/elon-musk-su...

No democrat should vote for anything in Congress until Musk is fired and all the federal funding he zeroed out on a whim is restored. We simply cannot have a democracy when the Executive's zonked-out Vizier moves fast and breaks things he doesn't understand, which is all things, because he's stupid.

"The amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor and moral courage it contained. That so few now dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of the time.” ― John Stuart Mill, "On Liberty", 1869

I hope America is as lucky as the delta jet - everyone survives but the right wing explodes

The American Physical Society congratulates the 2025 recipients of its most prestigious honors: Paul Corkum, Bharat Ratra and Ruben Verresen. Bharat is here at Kansas State, while Paul is a collaborator with our AMO physics group.

Today’s show was my last at CNN. My closing message: It’s never a good time to bow down to a tyrant… don’t give in to the lies. Don’t give in to fear. Hold on to the truth… and hope.

Another terrible "Star Wars" sequel that nobody asked for: aviationweek.com/defense/miss...

Someone has trouble reading either Section 1 or Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. ⚖️

It's Quantum Year 2025! Let's get small! ⚛️ #science

Ooof … spot-on analogy from United Humanists on FB

It seems that the Yellowstone supervolcano will not explode and kill all of us in 2025, but the Axial Seamount will get some of us... 🌋

Happy 2025 = 45², the first “square” year since 1936, the next being 2116. Its digit sum is also a square: 2+0+2+5 = 9 = 3². This last happened in 1681 and next occurs in 2304. And not since 900 has the year divided by the digit sum been a square too: 900/9=100 = 10² & 2025/9=225 = 15² QED. 👀🎉😁

Happy New Year! (my cartoon for @newscientist.bsky.social)

Apocalyptic disaster averted! This morning my espresso grinder stopped working! I calmly made a pour-over instead, and properly caffeinated, consulted the Inter-Webs. Baratza recognizes this as a known problem with the safely interlocks on the Sette grinders and has a helpful repair tutorial. ☕️

Destroy this myth. Please share if you have visited and researched in a library this past year! RT And give a shout out to your favorite library you have ever visited.

The horror! Joseph Conrad totally stole the story of "Heart of Darkness" from "Apocalypse Now". 😜 At only about 15% the length of "Moby Dick" this was a much quicker read, but I do feel obligated to watch the movie again, too. 🚁🏄‍♂️

This is one of the most inside, geeky jokes ever, and I love it, having once written a program to decode and display this weather data. 🌞🌡🌦

It is Egyptologists’ favourite time of the year again.

Just as I've finished re-reading "Moby Dick"!

We can't make this stuff up: tech companies Palantir and Anduril form fellowship for AI adventures

Finally finished my re-reading of "Moby Dick". Spoilers: Melville remains verbose, Ahab remains insane, the whale still wins in the end, and stop calling me Ishmael. 🐳

Intriguingly, it was a mere 100 years ago that the word "scientist" became accepted King's English. Not that a career in "natural philosophy" would have been a bad thing. 🧑‍🔬 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

You all MOCKED George Lucas and said this was boring or dumb but who’s laughing now???

A happy halloween chestnut

Well, damn. One of my first celebrity crushes (From Star Trek and CE3K). Not to mention everything else she ever did.

I've always thought of Captain America as a hero and someone to emulate.
