Really enjoyed this conversation on crime prevention with @benansell.bsky.social @criminologist.bsky.social @katrinhohl.bsky.social Alex Murray 👇👇👇

My colleague Andy Higgins writes here about why large retailers shouldn't just expect the police to deal with shoplifting. There's plenty that can be done to prevent it too www.police-foundation.org.uk/2025/02/shou...

Another great Rethink coming up today on R4 at 4pm on crime prediction and prevention. With @criminologist.bsky.social @katrinhohl.bsky.social @rickmuirbskysocial.bsky.social and Alex Murray. Does evidence based policing work and what kind of evidence do we need? www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

We have just launched our new @policefoundationuk.bsky.social paper on AI and policing. It sets out how the police currently use AI, describes the big challenges and makes 6 recommendations for the police/gvt. Thanks to @forensicanalytics.bsky.social for supporting the work. You can read it here 👇

Someone pointed this out to me on the other site and it's too good not to share: The Eagles had seven rushing touchdowns today. The Cowboys had six this season.

Touchdown!

Back from an amazing trip to Canada. Met lots of great people, learned a lot about the policing challenges there (v similar to UK) and visited some great places. Thanks to the Canadian Association of Police Governance for inviting me.

NEW: Why do we always think crime is rising, even when it isn’t? This week I looked at one of the big data mysteries. Britain is 2/3 less violent than the 1990s; thefts were higher pre-lockdown Why, then, doesn’t it feel like it? 1/8 @thetimes.com 🔗 www.thetimes.com/article/b63d...

The quality of MPs letters on both sides of the assisted dying debate just shows how much more value backbenchers could add if they were given a proper role in our parliamentary system.

1/ Wealth has raced ahead of earnings, creating a new caste society Tax is only part of the answer: we also need a new political economy that differentiates good & bad wealth My major new @ippr.bsky.social report: Earning Vs Owning ippr-org.files.svdcdn.com/production/D...

Trump’s vote share is now at 49.9% with some votes still being counted. Looks like his margin over Harris will be around 1.5%- the third smallest winning margin since 1888. Trump’s win was solid in the popular vote and electoral college. But it was not a landslide and it was not overwhelming.

NEW Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has set a new course for policing. Could it lead to a new super police agency for organised crime & terrorism? Does it mean performance targets are back? And is the extra £500m for next year enough? My thoughts, free to read: www.dannyshaw.net/post/cooper-...

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro and several aides indicted on charges of attempting a coup in 2022, police say.

I will remember John Prescott as the minister who introduced the Decent Homes Programme. When I was a local councillor I met countless council tenants who had brand new modern kitchens and bathrooms installed, often alongside better windows and heating. It was completely transformative. #RIP

A really important contribution by @rickmuirbskysocial.bsky.social and Tom Gash in @policinginsight.bsky.social to the debate on improving UK policing – the current national police structure just isn’t suited to the challenges policing faces. bsky.app/profile/poli...

Very useful overview of Rick and Tom's proposals. "In our estimation, the Government’s Safer Streets mission and efficiency agenda will be near-impossible to deliver without changes to the current governance and institutional frameworks." The saving are needed to fund neighbourhood policing.

Article on @policinginsight.bsky.social by me and Tom Gash setting out the case for a new national police body to drive change in terms of technology, forensics, data, leadership and coordination around key priorities, operational support 👇👇👇 policinginsight.com/feature/opin...

Delighted that the Home Secretary has announced the creation of a new national policing body to lead on technology, data, finance, standards, operational support - this is the main recommendation of a new paper by me and Tom Gash published today 👇👇👇

There are some bloody brilliant people on this #CriminalJustice #StarterPack Lawyers, commentators and NGOs working in/ discussing topics from the police to the courts to prisons (hi 👋) to probation… Please do share - and let me know if you’d like to be added go.bsky.app/2sQ9xmz

Big day for policing with Home Secretary to set out reform plans, with backing from NPCC chair Gavin Stephens. Later @policefoundationuk.bsky.social will be publishing a paper by me and Tom Gash setting out what a new national police body should look like www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024...
