Local Adaptation Is Highest in Populations With Stable Long-Term Growth onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1...

Every Friday, I write a debrief about what’s happening in science & higher ed. It goes out late, and is written for all the friends & colleagues I wish I could sit down and talk it through with over drinks. buttondown.com/liminalcreat...

"It is absurd to mindlessly decimate the workforce that has led the world in science over the past 75 years, and to willingly give up excellent scientists and talent," Beyer wrote. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

Take my previous job! We are hiring for the Research Director for the Center for Science and Democracy at @ucsusa.bsky.social . If ever there was a time where this position is impactful it is now. apply.workable.com/union-of-con...

"These kinds of shocks are going to lead to a mass exodus … for minorities in particular.” For my latest @science.org story, I spoke with early career researchers who have been affected by the federal upheaval and are concerned about what it means for their future. www.science.org/content/arti...

So sorry to hear this @folt.bsky.social

This excellent Nature paper from 2015 discussed multiple ways that sex is not binary, and why the idea of two sexes is simplistic. Required reading right now - please share! www.nature.com/articles/518... 🧪👨‍🔬🧬🖥️

I am hiring a lab technician! If you know anyone who has experience with field studies, enjoys working with plants, and is a good communicator and hard worker, pls pass this along! The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal. Please re-skeet! careers.umich.edu/job_detail/2...

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Feeling sad and angry for my friend and collaborator @mikoontz.bsky.social and all of the other exceedingly talented researchers who are in this situation. Mike had just recently started a position as Research Fire Ecologist for USGS and undoubtedly would have made huge contributions there 💔

“decimate” Despite my demographic, I think about the Roman Empire zero (0) times per day. But I do like words. Paul Brians taught me that “decimate” refers to eliminating 10% of people in an “unruly” unit as punishment. ~220k probies/~2.4m total… The Federal Service is being decimated.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

Just saw an email sent to a student of mine from a REU canceling their program due to staffing & federal research funding uncertainties. A REU was when I internalized my science ID & applying to grad school. If this continues, it will devastate my students #1 pathway to STEM careers.

More on the mass firing of federal scientists. These impacts are widespread, from early career folks who just landed their first job after graduating, to senior researchers who just got promoted. Demoralizing, heartbreaking, and wrong.

FWIW, North Carolina is #5 in the list of states most economically impacted by cuts to the NIH! Only four other states have us beat (CA, NY, MA, and TX). @500womensci.bsky.social www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

My heart is breaking as I hear of more and more federal workers getting fired. I deeply respect and value the incredible contributions that my colleagues at NSF have made towards basic scientific research and broader impact activities.

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

BTW, if you work in the weather/climate/disaster/emergency management space and are/were a federal employee who has been fired in recent hours/days, there are multiple journalists interested in speaking to you (and will be watching replies on this thread).

I was hoping that my first bsky post would be more cheerful. I recently joined NIH (NIEHS) as a PO. I fought hard for this position and was so excited to support health science from a new vantage point… I picked up my life and moved to NC. Unfortunately, my time at NIEHS was short lived.

So a former postdoc from our department had just started as a PO at NIH and was terminated in the wave of terminations last week. He is in the research triangle and a phenomenal scientist with expertise in stress and glia. If anyone in the RTI is hiring asap please let me know! #neuroskyence

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

This is, I think, pretty big given what we know about the statutory basis for Broader Impacts: “NSF continues to apply the statutorily required Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts review criteria, as well as any solicitation-specific review criteria.”

Unfortunately, I was one of the thousands of new USDA scientists let go yesterday. It was an absolute honor to work there. If anyone in the southeastern Michigan area knows of a role that might match my background, I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your support!

If you are a federal employee then pin this post & copy the link. This living resource will help you plan for what is coming. It covers prepping for terminations, paths forward, legal actions, lawyers, reporters & news agencies, etc. bit.ly/getreadyfed

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

No job ad yet, but I'll be hiring a postdoc at Purdue in population genetics/quantitative genetics/genomics in plants. DM if you have relevant experience and are potentially interested.

Excited to participate in this meeting in March!

What interesting and exciting common garden / reciprocal transplant experiments do you know of? Who is conducting them? I'm interested in connecting with folks as we continue to work on our climate-focused bur oak experiment in OK, IL and MN w/ @cavenderg9.bsky.social, Heather McCarthy & colleagues.

We are looking for two postdocs for a synthesis project focused on soil carbon dynamics and warming experiments. If you are excited about applying ML and process-based models to synthesize mechanisms of temperature sensitivity of soil respiration, please apply! lnkd.in/dV2wuGSe lnkd.in/diZiM9HV

Don't confuse being a fast talker with being a deep thinker. Speaking quickly signals confidence, not complexity. Don't mistake volume for expertise. Speaking loudly reflects conviction, not credibility. Sometimes the best ideas come from the least assertive voice in the room.
