Hello! My name is Alie. I'm an engineer + scientist who's written award-winning field guides about bugs, founded my own engineering firm, and invented brand-new classes of thermal insulation and metrology equipment. I'm so proud to be visible as an autistic trans woman in STEM! #womeninSTEM 👩‍🔬🧪

there are too many things every working adult needs to ignore in the news on a daily basis to be productive enough for capitalism, and it's terrible knowing every day there are even more awful and confusing things

Number 3! Quick bit about arachnophobia (and more cute spiders of course!) #Spiders #SciComm #Inverts #BugSky youtube.com/shorts/nsorG...

Feeling emotional at the end of this semester and I worry about these students in a way I have not for prior cohorts. :( But, here are some of their fantastic extra credit forest ecology (and more) memes!

🕷️Close-up view of the eyes of a little "Oklahoma Brown Tarantula" (Aphonopelma hentzi) found beneath a stone in the woods. Apparently females can live up to ~20 years, and males ~5-10!

Ending door-to-door canvassing, one FEMA worker says, will “severely hamper our ability to reach vulnerable people ... people who are elderly or with disabilities or lack of transportation and are unable to reach Disaster Recovery Centers." www.wired.com/story/fema-e...

Men are not constantly being told “you’re bad,” they are constantly being told “LEFT WING SJWS THINK YOU’RE BAD” by conservative propaganda. There’s a huge difference.

A few folks sent me messages about some unusual pigeons that appeared on the show Andor. Thank you! They are real pigeons and not CGI. They belong to the group of breeds called Pouters or Croppers. Here’s an illustration of an English Pouter from my book A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching.

Back to book pitching, so here I am caring about the # of followers I have 🤦‍♀️ HELLO! I'm a 🦑 scientist on a mission to get people to take action to protect earth's biodiversity. Alongside others, I use street art, zines, photography, collabs, & more to encourage action. Tell ur friends 😅

I love hermit crabs and invertebrates in general, not just mollusks. Trust me!!!

They don't want us to have nice things. That's it.

I've decided to continue posting about food safety recalls as a reminder that we really need to keep these protections in place. Nobody wants glass in their bread.

Day 8 of photoshopping @lastweektonight.com's John Oliver with fossils in the hopes that he saves the Paleontological Research Institution This Yorktown Formation Mercenaria in our collections might make a nice desk for our H. sapiens (if this were to scale) #molluskmonday #savePRI

Perfect of you're a finance guy who wants to sweep in and gobbler up the remains. We've been letting private equity decimate companies for decades now this is just speeding things up

it is weird to still be masking with a KN95 every time I am indoors and riding the subway and see almost no one else doing the same

It's hayfever season again so here's a reminder of my pro-tips for avoiding pollen as a plant ecologist who's allergic to the things I study at this time of year

Well Bee Fly, if you're going to be impossible to get close to then I shall treat you like a bird and capture you in flight. Greater Bee Fly (Bombylius major)

How do you pose this question and not immediately arrive at the obvious answer “Hire teachers who are subject matter experts in computer science”?

Out in time for #FossilFriday, a new overview of segmentation in horseshoe crabs and the evolution of their strange, fused body. Who knew I could write 20 pages on the thoracetron? Was fun getting to write "we should always remember we might be wrong", though. 🧪⚒️ doi.org/10.1017/jpa....

Relative of a family friend got swept up by ICE. The reason? He had a disagreement with his manager. Manager called ICE. ICE picked him up in front of the entire undocumented staff, as a fucking warning.

This policy is entirely designed to funnel immigrant delivery drivers to ICE. It's a fascist deportation program.

My new book The Birding Dictionary is out in four days. Just 3 left to get a pin if you preorder it in the USA! Preorders help so much, and I think this is going to be a really nice gift book and just generally add some humor and strangeness to your day.

The Justice Department filed lawsuits this week against Hawaii, Michigan, New York, and Vermont to block the states’ climate-motivated lawsuits against fossil fuel companies. Read more in this morning's climate briefing.

I’ve been to the Galapagos and I can confirm that boobies are genuinely just like that

The anonymous GOP trans care "review" dropped less than 24 hours ago and the trans community has already tracked down several of its authors. No surprises, they're anti-trans activists with no scientific or medical background. Just incredible.

a small Texas county found a way to make money off migrants: arrest them for trespassing, make them post bail to get out of jail, turn them over to ICE, collect forfeited bail money. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/01/u...

One from the archives - this is from when I really truly believed I had a shot at creating a book about bugs. It's still an ambition, albeit one that's gradually eroding.

That's a wrap! 🤩 Had an absolute blast on my first TV shoot! Thanks to @pastpreservers.bsky.social, Go Button Media, and everyone who made this possible! Can't wait to see the final outcome of the project 🥰📺

It appears that Dr. David has confirmed the central hypothesis of a study published earlier this year. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

My pet gar that I donated to Shedd Aquarium would recognize me and swim over to say hi when I visited her exhibit ❤️🐠 A rare hybrid gar, I raised her since she was 2 inches long, and had to re-home her when I moved to Chicago. I was happy I could visit her in her new home! TO BE CONTINUED…
