New York's (de)congestion pricing, which charges $9 to drive into Manhattan below 60 St, has reduced traffic, increased ridership, reduced subway crime, and is raising funds to fix the decaying transit system. Rare for a public policy to have this many benefits!

In many ways it's fitting that the showdown between monarchy and democracy ends up being over NYC congestion pricing. Cities are where the power of kings were first challenged, and few things are more fundamental to government than control of public space. The cameras are staying on!

South Florida falling from Texas levels of homebuilding in the 1990s and 2000s to NY/California levels today suggests that red states haven’t figured out the secret to beating NIMBYism – they just haven’t run out of room to sprawl…yet. housing-data.vercel.app

Can’t get enough of these congestion pricing anecdotes via @dodai.bsky.social nytimes.com/2025/01/11/nyregion/new-york-congestion-pricing-reaction.html

These two - subways and libraries - on the top of my list as well.

Guy Drives A Car Into Manhattan To Drive A Horse Around Manhattan has to be my favorite NYT Congestion Pricing character so far

Canal/Broadway on Day 3 of congestion pricing. This is frankly incredible.

My favorite thing now whenever I see some incredible, transformational train/transit project around the world is looking up when construction started and when it opened Vienna Hauptbahnhof thru-running: construction started 2007, first thru trains 2012, station fully opens 2014/2015

Not sure the police could have made him look more heroic if they’d tried. You’d think with all the PR ppl the NYPD (and our tax $) employ, someone would have realized that the optics of this are just begging to make him more of an anti-establishment folk hero than he already was.

For the 350k daily riders who pass through DeKalb Ave's painfully slow interlocking section, faster travel & fewer delays are on the horizon. Thanks to new signaling systems, modernized train traffic control is coming to one of the subway's tightest bottlenecks. www.nydailynews.com/2024/12/08/m...

underrated how much of the reason the Adams admin has sucked is Lewis-Martin he's a corrupt clown, she is actually extremely conservative (as well as corrupt) and has prevented his city hall from accidentally doing good things

Ingrid Lewis-Martin, who engineered Eric Adams’ rise from police captain to mayor of the nation’s largest city, is abruptly resigning from City Hall. www.politico.com/news/2024/12...

What's the most underrated city in the US?

Why would she do such a thing??

Paris introduced its first trainsets with open gangways in 1993. Every order since has included them b/c they increase capacity, improve air circulation, and make passenger movement easy & comfortable. Paris saw the benefits and didn’t look back. Time for NYC to follow suit.

NYC's much-touted war on toll-evading "ghost cars" is likely doomed. Major doubts about the upcoming congestion pricing program, too. 2 reasons: 1. Law enforcement personnel are among the biggest offenders. There's a deeply entrenched culture of corruption. 2. Camera technology is easily defeated.

A while back I worked on a project where we met with the metro planning organizations of the nation's 25 biggest cities and asked them how to improve regional land planning. About half of them were like "Look, are you going to publish our remarks publicly? No? Okay, THE STATE DOT IS EVIL"

genuinely things were much healthier for young nerdy men when they read pulp science fiction and fantasy novels than this airport bookstore management mindset shit everyone reads now

Sure, outdoor dining structures for 20 people to eat in are being taken down so 2 cars can park for free, but have you considered in some instances it's so only 1 car who did a really lazy job can park for free? (where Gerties' shed used to be)

never seen a better example of "Democrats trust institutions, Republicans trust Trump"

always v funny to see Republicans try to weaponize the "we don't have a housing crisis we have an AFFORDABLE housing crisis" line like girl we know you don't care about affordable housing either

Please enjoy this animation of peak hour MTA subway service (by u/mtdfan)

Just in case people didn’t see this the first time.

NYC is planning to order arguably the most expensive subway train in the world. It shouldn't be this way. After decades of overly conservative procurement, the MTA needs to rethink its approach. Read Part 1 of our Capital Plan analysis in here: www.etany.org/a-not-so-cap...

Caltrain's ridership in October was up 54% from the same month last year. This goes to show how investing in frequent and modern electric trains are the best way for our transit agencies to adapt to today's travel needs. www.sfgate.com/travel/artic...

Can she run for Mayor of New York now instead of Cuomo?

I still really love these signs on the new A trains which tell you where on the platform you are. So useful!

We used to live on Pacific St one block over from this lot. Always wondered why those lots were empty:

Feels like they probably shouldn’t have waited until the 27th paragraph in a story about rising hotel rates in NYC to mention the ban on new hotels and most existing Airbnbs. Full article here: www.nytimes.com/2024/11/24/n...

Others have noted it but I will too: The big reason Bluesky is so hot right now is that the people who add value to social media - the frequent posters in specific fields - are here now, talking to each other and creating the "spectator value" that draws users and attention.

NYC used to consistently build 5-10 new subway stations every single year. Since 1990 we have built 4. Not 4 per year. 4 total over 34 years. If Democrats are going to prove we can govern, we need to fix this asap.

This is a really big deal. We are one step closer to the first major pro-housing win for New York. 🧵

The Council majority and City Hall have reached a SWEEPING agreement integrating the original City of Yes proposal with City for All, spearheaded by the Speaker. This historic zoning reform is a major step toward addressing NYC’s housing shortage. 🧵

During Trump's 1st term, his budgets proposed devastating cuts, e.g. eliminating all fed funding for: —Long-distance Amtrak —New transit projects —CDBG —HOME He couldn't kill those programs because Congress appropriated funds. If Supreme Court allows impoundment, Trump could unilaterally kill them.
