This week's column asks a question that should be in everyone's minds, as Trump reshapes the world's alliances: How, given that our defence and security capacities are completely infiltrated by the US state, do we defend ourselves if the US becomes our opponent? www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

My fiancée and I went down to the NYC city clerk’s office this morning to obtain our marriage license. There were far, far more same-sex couples there than one would expect, like maybe 30% of couples there were gay. All of us hear the ticking clock.

Sooo... I'm also hosting a YouTube series for @wired.com now that's focused on privacy and surveillance. The first episode, which is about Tesla, just went live. www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7VH...

I’m somehow on a Heritage Foundation mailing list (😂) and they sent a survey to see what we think of DOGE. Who wants to offer some m-fing feedback?!? secured.heritage.org/the-heritage... Please share with a friend or a thousand :)

A breakthrough in tackling climate change: converting CO2 into fuel with just sunlight, no fossil fuels needed.

So, Trump forcibly deports hundreds of immigrants who have no criminal record and welcomes in Andrew Tate - a toxic misogynist on trial for rape, child-trafficking and money-laundering. Sums up what this repulsive US regime is all about. Moral depravity and money. Nothing else. Nothing good.

We’d all like zero energy costs in our homes and this new housing project in Essex proves that it’s possible. @jennyrhodes42.bsky.social on the future of sustainable living.

The UK has fully privatised Energy, France fully nationalised.

One of the benefits of Brexit is that Nationalising companies is very easy, they have no European Supreme Court to appeal to. So you tell them they have to sell, and you will pay X amount. And that's it, they can't stop you. I suggest we use this benefit.

The richest man in the world has parasitically imposed himself on the federal government to insist that all employees generate content for his language-processing machine, conscripted the administrative state as monkeys at typewriters, all under penalty of dismissal should they refuse.

A ‘free energy’ housing scheme in Essex features 113 homes equipped with solar panels, heat pumps, and a centralised battery storage system. This setup allows residents to enjoy zero energy bills for at least five years. @jennyrhodes42.bsky.social reports

On Monday morning, TV sets at the headquarters of the Department of Housing and Urban Development played the seemingly AI-generated video on loop, along with the words “LONG LIVE THE REAL KING.” Read the full article: www.wired.com/story/trump-...

“Fascism always fails. “It is destructive and it is awful and not everyone lives to see the other side, but it always, always fails…It takes fighting back. It takes throwing punches. It takes doing whatever it takes to beat it back, to protect those that are most vulnerable from its many attacks.”

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

NEW: In November, I wrote a Guardian column headlined 'How to Survive the Broligarchy'. Pretty much everything predicted has now come true. What I'm launching today is part handbook, how to protect ourselves? And part manifesto, how to fight back? Please join me. 1/ open.substack.com/pub/broligar...

Nature-friendly solar farms in East Anglia support more bird species than arable land, enhancing biodiversity. Paul Casciato on some surprising findings.

It’s a coup. It’s a strategic alliance with Putin. It’s the end of the post-war international order. It’s the triumph of lies over truth and in Putin’s case, evil over good. We are through the looking glass & we all now have to decide who we are & what we stand for

Glad that readers are responding so forced to the marriage notice of the Guardian to OpenAI. If you want to read the background to this deal & support a new independent outlet, please read this from 3 weeks ago & sign up for a new edition out soon. Yours, A Human open.substack.com/pub/broligar...

Question Time last night was pretty fierce. And had to be. There's a deliberate effort now to shift the ground: towards appeasement, inhumanity and authoritarianism. Once more, we must resist it. We must fight hard for kindness. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

The neoliberal dream of fossil fuel billionaire Charles Koch was always the destruction of US democracy and the elimination of government (except for its repressive organs police, courts, prisons, military ofc), and now he has won. What now? A 🧵. 1/ t.co/FKxxmLyfce

The ultimate power of any court is in its coercive orders - and a machinery to readily enforce those orders. But once those coercive orders are defied without sanction, there is nothing left. That’s it: game over. Just pieces of paper with fancy words and writing.

“Migrants, illegal or legal, weren’t responsible for austerity. They weren’t responsible for Brexit. They weren’t responsible for Liz Truss’ failure. Because of populist policies in the ‘30s Hitler was elected. If we follow the same blaming of migrants we will go the same way” #bbcqt

It did not take long until the naysayers on heat pumps also arrived on Bluesky. To all of the "experts" commenting in my feed that heat pumps don't work: STUDY THE SCIENCE! I have - here's my summary: www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-18...

As a reminder, land areas (where we live) are warming around twice as fast as the oceans. Subsequently, most of us are 'experiencing' temperatures rising faster than the global mean record. Data from NASA GISTEMPv4: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/ ⚒️🧪

Mandatory speed limiters; 100% 20mph zones on Local Road Transport Network roads; life driving bans for those convicted of dangerous driving; heavy custodial sentences for those who flout bans; 100% Low Traffic Neighbourhood coverage of residential areas; 100% School Streets. Nothing else will do.

Cycling is 5 times more energy efficient than walking. And 4 times faster too.

"Just half a pound of the stuff may remove as much carbon dioxide as a tree can". What the f**k does that even mean? A mature tree removes ~25 kg of CO₂/year. This "new powder" is a sorbent with a capacity of 0.96 mmol/g, so that's 0.0096 kg of CO₂ per 0.5 lbs. You'd need 1305 lbs to equal a tree.

Maybe many green non-profits will now understand how the climate struggle is connected to the Palestinian genocide given how both climate organizations & Palestinian groups will be politically targeted. If this doesn’t change the calculation & thinking nothing will newrepublic.com/article/1887...

NEW: The great Trump-Musk crackdown is coming. And it will hit hard & fast. Journalists will be first. But everyone else is next. I urge you to read my 20 lessons in How to Survive the Broligarchy, inspired by & featuring the great @timothysnyder.bsky.social 1/ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Personal update: Last week’s operation led to some nerve damage & rising pain. Neuropathic, apparently. I’m still in hospital. But I have a Fentanyl button. Today is my birthday. Seems apt to spend it taking some hardcore drugs & wearing something backless
