The NHS must invest in comprehensive provision of alternatives to inpatient care to ensure more people to get effective help closer to home, according to a new report from Centre for Mental Health #CareBeyondBeds www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk/publications...

Disabled people have been discriminated against in every aspect of life: care, housing, employment, transportation and countless others. No one should be codifying assisted dying for disabled people before disabled people are provided with the necessities of life.

With a (sometimes hidden) disability I feel people underestimate the pressure society has put on us to reach certain milestones. Grieving the time I have lost to my illness is both painful and liberating. Doing life slowly and letting go of where I feel should be is a constant journey

Counterpoint: Do

Channel 4 documentary on benefits was ā€˜atrocityā€™ and ā€˜insultā€™ to disabled people in poverty, say activists www.disabilitynewsservice.com/channel-4-do...

Where is the talk of the mass disabling event that was the pandemic? Where is the recognition that we are a genuinely sicker society?

I am 10 minutes into the Channel 4 Dispatches Documentary on benefits, and I'm already enraged at the representation of those with disabilities.

Most Brits will look at the US reaction to the assassination of United Healthā€™s CEO & think ā€œthank god we donā€™t have that system, where insurance firms try every trick to deny care even to ppl theoretically coveredā€ā€¦& have no idea that United Health is already ā€œhelpingā€ NHS manage access & provision

Obviously milk as it relates to the climate crisis is political, but it feels like they're trying to create a culture war over your milk choices, and that just feels a little hilarious

Kind of love that we now have left wing milk šŸ˜…

How have we got to the point where even milk is up for political debate.

If Labour donā€™t offer the public enough positive change, lots more people are going to flock to Farage.

I can't wait to one day be a middle-class woman of a certain age šŸ„°

The lens of ableism devalues and dehumanizes disabled people. The lens of ableism blurs access, accommodation, rights, equity and justice for disabled people in favor of continued exclusion.

This is why we need a Labour party that doesn't pander to the far right. Offer us an inspiring vision for the future without sowing more division.

šŸšØDR UK's Statement on Passing of Assisted Dying Bill We stand firmly against a law that risks pressuring Disabled people into decisions driven by lack of options rather than genuine choice. This bill could reinforce the narrative that Disabled peopleā€™s lives are less valuable.

My statement on the Assisted Dying Bill.

I. JUST. WANT. THE. RECIPE. I. DON'T. WANT. FOUR. PAGES. OF. STORY. ABOUT. HOW. THIS. WAS. YOUR. AUNT. LINDA'S. FAVORITE. DISH. ON. WINTER. ESCAPES. TO. THE. MOUNTAINS.

Labour canā€™t even mention long Covid in their ā€˜Get Britain Workingā€™ White Paper but they can make time for an Assisted Dying Bill. Sums everything up.

The fact that self-worth is often tied to wage labour can be devastating, but whether you're in work or not, you deserve to feel valued. We are all just trying to survive in increasingly dark times, and if you're still with us, you're doing a great job #mentalhealth #disability #work

We really donā€™t talk enough about the detrimental mental health impact of being constantly told, and treated like youā€™re a burden to society has on people out of work, especially disabled people.

A beautiful piece. Pets are truly a god send to some of us ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Whatever is announced today, remember those with mental illness and disabilities are not scroungers or skivers. Your struggles are valid, and you are worth more than our government will let on.

Saying the quiet part out loud #disability #assisteddying

As our open letter in @bmj.com today shows, Oregon assisted dying laws have already extended beyond conditions that can be defined as terminal. Why is this being ignored?

If you oppose NHS privatisation, please could you repost this and follow me? I need to know who to follow next (itā€™ll be you!) šŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸ

Peopleā€™s worth isnā€™t determined by their ability to work. We all deserve a decent living standard regardless. Just under 1/4 of the UK population is disabled, and anyone could become so. Please, ditch ā€œstrivers vs skiversā€ narratives and instead repair our social security net.

I wanted to say that it's going to be a really difficult week for the disabled and other vulnerable people on benefits. Liz Kendall's DWP White paper comes out on Tuesday. The Assisted Dying Parliamentary Debate is on Friday. If you need to, reach out for a chat. Don't get overwhelmed.

4 days ago I slept under the hood next to the car engine to stay warm. I had to hunt for my food. Now I sleep in a warm bed, I have a private chef, and I watch a lady dig for my poop. Follow me for advice! #cats #catsofbluesky #kitty #Cats #MoriaRose #Moria

Although I know this is likely coming from Tory/ Reform supporters. Starmer needs to take this as a warning sign to stop his tory-lite bullshit and offer a hopeful vision for the country

Ableism is not casual or benign. Ableism begins with mocking and leads to policies and practices that threaten the lives of disabled people. Ableism is always about the devaluation of disabled people and that is never harmless.

This. I find in eating disorders you have to recover and have an inspiring story before your voice is taken seriously. You have to recover in the imperfect system to change the imperfect system.

To combat eating disorder thoughts on a rainy day, i turned my flat into a cat play park and watched my resident cat acrobat wreck havoc.

As a disabled person, the media landscape in this country is truly terrifying. I'm not 100% sure if the link is intentional, but the way disabled people are framed in the UK does make the conversation around assisted dying more sinister.

Please consider this: āš ļøOregonā€™s assisted dying laws (closest to that proposed in šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§) limit assisted death to terminal illnesses only āš ļøAnorexia cannot be defined as a terminal illness āš ļøPeople with anorexia have HAD assisted deaths in Oregon šŸšØWe donā€™t need to fear a slippery slope. Itā€™s here.

Itā€™s all very well Liz Kendall sounding off about peopleā€™s ā€œself-diagnosedā€ mental health issues, but does she have any idea how nigh on impossible it is these days to get in front of someone qualified to diagnose complex / youth MH, ie a psychiatrist? Even very ill people often being fobbed off.

To hear how those with disabilities are a burden on a state to go straight into a conversation on assisted dying... I fear for how those with chronic illness will be treated if this goes through...
