House Rs just passed the budget resolution, the first step in their process to enact a bill that'd kick millions off Medicaid & cut SNAP down to just $1.60 per person per meal on avg while cutting taxes for the top 0.1% by $278k - all while increasing the debt 🧵on what's to come and WHERE TO FIGHT

Huh. Interesting theory.

Understandably, there will be a significant number of words written about the rise of the AfD and its success, but, all too often, any advances made by parties of the left are waved off. Might it be young voters just want someone, anyone, who offers upheaval, rather than them loving neo-fascists?

This could apply globally. Reminds me of the quote from The Dark Knight "some people just want to watch the world burn". Those who've been radicalized might well say such language is overdramatic...but they're playing with fire in any event.

Three things that make the U.S. the envy of the world: 1) Professionalized military with strong norm of civilian control 2) Higher education and cutting-edge scientific research 3) Ability to welcome immigrants and attract the “best and the brightest” All three are under threat.

This is how it’s done.

This is a shameful way to treat our fellow citizens who are public servants. This doesn’t make America great.

The past ten years has just been the same clutch of morons and apologists insisting that Trump would never cross that line and then shuffling along with him to insist that he would never cross that next one.

That's true but it's glaringly obvious, and has been for years, that Trump does not consider Ukraine a friend. He has always taken Russia's side.

Upon receiving the news that four of the City's Deputy Mayors have submitted their resignations, I sent the following letter to @nycmayor.

You cannot fire so many people and shutter so many agencies and services and not expect things to start to go very bad very quickly. Our job is to highlight not only the chaos and cruelty of the firings, but also the devastating consequences. The public must turn on this madness and soon.

American institutions—from the media to Congress—continue to underreact to the unraveling of our democracy. Overseas our media would not hesitate to call what we’re living through a full-blown autocratic coup. Here's my attempt at the story they should write: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-trump...

Ok folks. Time for me to pull my law rank and correct some shit. When a judge issues a civil contempt order, she does not hand it to the prosecutor or AG and say “enforce this if you feel like it.” The judge hands it directly to a law enforcement officer, who has no discretion on whether to serve it

At some point, the complete radio silence from the three Democrats with the most power to weigh on the Eric Adams situation - Schumer, Jeffries, and Hochul - combined with the fact that two of them come from Brooklyn Dem circles as well, starts to feel a little bit like complicity.

Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges. This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.

This is absolutely insane. Musk’s DOGE crew just straight up *took* $80 million from an NYC bank account!

Brianna Keilar: Do you think that calling Elon Musk a dick is effective messaging? Congressman Robert Garcia: Well, he is a dick.

On the first three weeks of Trump being back in office, at Law Dork: www.lawdork.com/p/donald-tru...

This upside-down notion—that if an elected politician commits crimes in office, it’s undemocratic to hold them accountable—is a big part of why America is in this mess. No, winning an election does NOT grant permission to break the law. Yes, following democratically enacted laws is democratic.

Here's the acting head of FEMA just unliterally deciding that Article I is fake earlier today. The Constitution is not in effect.

Once again, I am here from Poland to tell you that predicating your response to a rule of law crisis on fear of how your opponents will frame your resistance is as ineffectual as it is solipsistic.

This was my nightmare on inauguration day and it all came true immediately, in ways far worse than I imagined. People simply refusing to see or acknowledge what is happening in front of their noses.

Someone at the American Bar Association ate their Wheaties this morning.

SURPRISE!!!! Trump quietly fired head of office that protects whistleblowers: new lawsuit www.alternet.org/trump-whistl...

Replace one Orange guy in the White House for another. I’m listening…

The Chiefs can still be named Super Bowl champions if Mike Pence has the courage.

The United States Senate has confirmed the nomination of Russell Vought to serve, once again, as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. The vote was 53-47. Vought was an architect of Project 2025.

Asked a seasoned State Dept employee how Marco Rubio has been received so far. "He has a minder, like a Trump campaign minder." A what? "Someone in his office, not of his choosing. [Like with Tillerson], they sent somebody over because he wasn't totally within the fold." 👀

This is an absolutely remarkable memo — and a betrayal of both the Constitution and the American political tradition. In the US, by *explicit contrast* with interwar fascist governments, the state is not supposed to be an extension of the personality of the chief executive.

Breaking from me and @mjsdc.bsky.social : Newly installed AG Pam Bondi sent out more than a dozen memos in a 15 minute period on Wednesday. One of them told staffers to come up with "proposals for criminal investigations" of large companies that have DEIA initiatives. slate.com/news-and-pol...

The policy lead for CDC's H5N1 response has abruptly resigned. Sources tell me CDC's response to the bird flu pandemic has been severely hobbled by the chaos of the past two weeks.

"Defying legal limits"....so you mean...."breaking the law"? "illegal" that kind of thing...hmm, maybe use those terms @nytimes.com, huh? The cowardice at legacy media is staggering. Sometimes a spade is a damn spade...call it out!

You may have heard that Secretary Rubio issued a waiver so that life-saving HIV treatment could continue during the break-up of USAID. It has not.

1. Yesterday, the Trump admin released a contract laying out more details of the "deferred resignation" offer they are using to encourage federal employees to resign. The deal is MUCH WORSE than it seemed Anyone who signs this contract agrees to resign and gets NOTHING guaranteed in return

The NFL literally erasing its "End Racism" slogan in anticipation of Trump attending the Super Bowl is... quite something. www.nytimes.com/athletic/611...

Axelrod and Emanuel need to be ignored at every opportunity. They aren’t built for this era of politics.

Too many people didn't appreciate just how wonderful, how glorious, it was that the daily news cycle during Biden's presidency was boring as fuck.

Democrats "should have a war room that operates 24/7 to generate and voice loud and smart opposition to the Trump-Musk onslaught," @davidcorn.bsky.social writes. (In other words...take a cue from the R's playbook.) www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

super bowl ad not even kidding about this, do a super bowl ad about how Elon has your social security number and can shut off your grandma's check at any time

It is hard to imagine a bigger gift to China than what Elon Musk is doing to USAID right now. It’s the backbone of all democracy aid in the entire world. The other funder remaining now? China.

The most important thing I can tell everyone that I've learned from being a YouTuber who explains how stuff works is that each and every time I thought "this is common knowledge and doesn't need to be explained" I was wrong.
