Looool

I don't even want to think about the cybersecurity and national security implications of having every federal government employee be required to send an email detailing their work to a single entity. That seems like a good way to purge anyone with good security hygiene and/or operation security.

I think it’s not helpful to repeat claims that the administration is working on eliminating “DEIA” as though it’s some kind of corporate strategy; just say explicitly that they’re trying to eliminate diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and explain how.

Side note. There are eight members of the joint chiefs. the chair is black. the CNO (navy) is a woman. the other six are white guys. chair and the cno got fired tonight.

Did the @nytimes.com really quote the mf-ing communications director of the Houston YOUNG REPUBLICANS as if he were just some random young Black person who likes Trump? Cause it sure looks like it.

did the doctor from arrested development write this

This is incredible reporting that must shock the conscience of each and every one of us.

Want to go visit the national parks this year? Sorry. The reservation system is shut down, EMT personnel are gone, so don't get hurt or lost. No one can clean the bathrooms or cabins, so they'll be closed. Rangers are fired. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

crops of some things in the works o/ #pixelart

There is a reason we have kept all this personal data about YOU compartmentalized, and run by extremely boring and fastidious bureaucrats who seek neither fame nor fortune. Because you are not going to enjoy the alternative.

I will say again: The destruction of the CFPB—an agency that has brought in $20 billion over a little more than a decade despite having an annual budget that's less than what DOD has spent so far today—is the clearest sign none of this has anything to do with saving taxpayers money.

Trump/Musk just laid off the entire VA info security team, in the middle off the night, this weekend.

Bought some used hardware on eBay. Factory reset didn't work. Wasn't able to get in with admin/admin. So, I desoldered the flash chip, replaced it with a ZIF socket, dumped it, and pointed John the Ripper at /etc/shadow. Password was "admin", but username was "agcfw". Sometimes obscurity works!

Dear Democratic Party: why are you not screaming this from every rooftop? Why are you not holding press conferences with these poor fired people - putting a face on what the richest man is destroying?

This is a fascinating vulnerability. The root causes are implementing deterministic signatures instead of hedged, using a general purpose big number implementation, and leaking its API at the crypto layer. JavaScript types are a red herring, could have happened in any language.

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

CBS is one of a dozen U.S. outlets that responded to authoritarianism by shifting coverage further right, which is why we're calling rounding up minorities in the middle of the night and dumping them in random countries they've never been to a "breakthrough"

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

The interim US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a FedSoc member and former Scalia clerk, has done more to publicly expose the corruption of the Trump administration this week at greater personal cost than any elected official I can think of.

It's getting tiring to keep saying this, but for posterity's sake I will: any previous administration would have been instantly sunk by this. Before January 20, 2017, this would have been the most stunning corruption scandal in the history of the American justice system. Now, it's...a Thursday.

Not that anyone cares but a bunch of senior doj officials resigning over a corrupt instruction to drop a case was what triggered the Nixon impeachment, and in the Trump era it's just the 2pm scandal of a random Thursday and every day now has ~3 such scandals that would have ended any prior admin

HHS Secretary Dr. Leo Spacemen

This is an absolute scandal. Trump and Marco Rubio abandoned American workers and their families abroad, delaying waivers to provide for their safe return to the United States. As these civil servants lost their possessions, housing, and money, Elon Musk was slandering them with bogus accusations.

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.

The left map shows the parts of Germany with the highest percentage of Syrian refugees. The right map shows public support for the anti-migrant AfD. Something to keep in mind when reading stories that posit a direct link between refugee numbers and support for the far-right.

I wish there was a way to quantify the collective amount of work lost due to stress and despair over the last few weeks, independent of barriers to funding.

Today’s millennial product of excellence. You’re not making spaghetti at home, you are a sophisticated culinary expert who spends 8 dollars for only the finest of Italy

not trying to pick on this guy. this just reminded me that the federal government does not provide coffee to workers. to drink coffee at a federal office you generally have to pay into a "coffee club" that is managed by a staffer who volunteers to collect money and purchase a monthly coffee supply.

His illiquidity is the danger. He has to keep doing shit like this. The Not Actually Real Money Bus must be kept above $200 billion or it will explode. All of this shit is basically debt and blackmail and it's forcing people like Musk into increasingly precarious and dangerous positions.

I appreciate that he just distilled all conspiracies into one single sentiment

Interestingly, in Loper Bright vs Raimondo, the conservative majority on SCOTUS ruled just last year that the judiciary can in fact overrule regulatory decisions made by the executive branch especially when those decisions are not specified by Congress.

vance is lying and knows he’s lying but even if he weren’t, “separation of powers means the president is an elected despot” may be true in some other political system but it has never been true in the american political system

worth saying that vermeule’s view that “separation of powers means the president is an elected despot” is fucking stupid and has no basis in the constitution as written

Here’s a great example of these idiots having no idea what they’re cutting. Why would the U.S. help Sri Lanka mitigate the effects of climate change? Because natural disasters are brutal and sea level rise will devastate the country. If we don’t help, China will.

Brian Krebs confirmed what I suspected. Like most people who worked for Path Network, Edward Coristine came from the cybercrime community, and was active as recently as May 2024 krebsonsecurity.com/2025/02/teen...

The thing that scares me most about AI is that while it is possible to design specialized ML models to assist with almost any tasks, these days when someone says AI, they almost always mean a Large Language Model, which is a technology not fit for 99.999% of tasks. 1/2

More of this please.

Just out: my new Cato piece on why public officials, unlike some startup founders, cannot simply "move fast and break things," at least not if what they are breaking are things like the law and their oath to the Constitution. /1

if the president can say “i don’t like the department of energy,” and within a week it’s closed, then the constitution means nothing, and the president’s entire claim to power is the loyalty of the military. either he is constrained by the constitution or he’s a dictator, there isn’t a middle ground

Yeah so the Constitution isn’t really in effect right now

This is VERY good news. Love bookshop.org and all the stuff they do! www.salon.com/2025/01/28/b...
