No PhD students or severely reduced # of admits -> *undergraduates* looking now to start the next phase of their career in support of research & discovery will be stuck without an option. This is far from the only place in a similar situation, whether announced publicly yet or not.

The most recent lecture I gave on Oak Origins at The Morton Arboretum was really nicely recorded and is available for free online. This is the fullest and cleanest version of the lecture I've given to date, with some new info. I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share. vimeo.com/1057955943

As many of you know, ~170 Program Officers at #NSF were fired on Tuesday, including a number that worked in Divisions important to the EEB community (e.g., DEB and GEO/OPP). 1/3

Duolingo is a whole mood tonight.

Diversity is our greatest asset, even if the government disagrees… They not like us! POC in STEM are here to stay. They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence! Mustard on the [Be][At] bro. Happy Black History Month!

We’re hiring again! Our new Leader Systematic Botany role at Botanic Gardens of Sydney is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive team of 15 scientists working on systematics, phylogenomics, and macroevolution of the Australian flora. iworkfor.nsw.gov.au/job/leader-s...

Inside the lobby at NSF…

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

sorry, pronouns in bio triggered us so hard we had to become a fascist dictatorship over it

Say "hi" and give a follow to the newest Bluesky scientists from the #LagoLab- @evoyeyo.bsky.social, @laymonstera.bsky.social, and @lcorleto08.bsky.social!

I’m grieving all the future science and training opportunities that could have been— that could still be, if only the current administration wasn’t laser-focused on dismantling the infrastructure to support it. I am hopeful that some check or balance will slow this down- but not very. Damn.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

Brazil shows that it can be done. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

We have decided to permanently abdicate our place as a world leader in knowledge and innovation. Just awful.

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

We had an amazing day celebrating Black biologists in @lsubiosci.bsky.social today- a research symposium by LSU, Tulane and UL Lafayette students and a perfect keynote by @tmariewms.bsky.social highlight a legacy of Black voices in botany (culminating in her own research). #BlackHistoryMonth 🧪

💼 Job alert!!! 🌺 Endowed Chair in Botany at the University of Hawaiʻi! Continuous recruitment until position is filled – application review begins March 17,2025. www.schooljobs.com/careers/hawa...

This is, I think, pretty big given what we know about the statutory basis for Broader Impacts: “NSF continues to apply the statutorily required Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts review criteria, as well as any solicitation-specific review criteria.”

Taking advantage of a seminar visit- it’s @tmariewms.bsky.social’s first Mardi Gras!

At the Mystic Crew of Mutts parade in BR - I’m going to have to miss a lot of parades this year so I went heavy with the Diablo Huma (Ecuadorian trickster god) and Mardi Gras overalls. The dogs weren’t as impressed as I had hoped. #mardigras

CBS is one of a dozen U.S. outlets that responded to authoritarianism by shifting coverage further right, which is why we're calling rounding up minorities in the middle of the night and dumping them in random countries they've never been to a "breakthrough"

Ethiopian wolf pollinator is my version of Tom Holland's "Singin' in the Rain" lip sync- an immediate repost!!

A little botany for your Valentine 🌹🫶

The littlest of silver linings (6:57 CT, Feb 11).

I have shut down your work in the lab that does science at which you were probably making new knowledge Forgive me it was expensive so gender and so woke

Dr. Marie Clark Taylor was the first Black woman to earn a PhD in #botany, studying the impact of photoperiod on plant development. www.plantcellatlas.org/bipoc-scient... #28DaysOfBlackSTEMHistory #BlackHistoryMonth

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

We should all be using our best SciComm skills to talk about the impacts of these cuts. Many students in my class this morning had not heard this news, and none understood how indirect costs worked (because who does, outside of academia?) Several came up after class to thank me for the explanation.

This is an important award at an important time. Thanks for not backing down from your commitment to DEI, @botsocamerica.bsky.social.

#BREAKING - 22 states sue to block Trump administration cuts to NIH research payments

Just received an NSF panel availability request…
