FRIDAY: Join @standupforscience.bsky.social rallies around the US to protest funding cuts, illegal firings, and censorship of scientists. In response to the attacks, the most important thing we can do is to visually show that science has strong support in this country, so please show up if you can!

Comrade @heathercorinna.bsky.social just reminded me about this outstanding piece from @thellpsx.bsky.social in 2021 on how mutual aid in the disability community sometimes looks very different from that in nondisabled spaces! Very important read in this moment.

#booksky, #disability & #cozyfantasy folks -- we have 9 free books now! One of these books there's no other way to get! So if you're interested: 1) Contact your reps on behalf of disabled rights. 2) Send a copy to [email protected]. 3) In March we'll send you the books!

This may be my favourite origin story for a story. (And I'm looking forward to reading it!)

gift article for anyone who’s seen this piece, by whatever title, go around. it’s just so boring that @nytimes.com would publish… this and not literally anything from @thesicktimes.bsky.social— they’re doing the job every day orders of magnitude better than wallace-wells was able to publish here.

If you see this, post your pride flags! (And optional crafts you made of those flags.) Don't forget the alt text!

More of this please.

Heeeeey so this amazing podcast I get to be part of —> @worldbuildcast.bsky.social is eligible for the Hugo for Best Fancast. Gotta say, I am so, so humbled and amazed to get to be part of it, and @cassmorriswrites.com & @mrmaresca.com are positively the best.

Fine. Go ahead and raise the bar, why don't you? (AKA now *this* is how to fucking alt text!)

Five major airlines are suing to overturn a rule from then-Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg that actually holds airlines accountable for damaging disabled people's wheelchairs. New from me at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

"To disengage from the world of power and resources is to allow others to mold culture and determine meaning for our lives." @prentishemphill.bsky.social in their excellent new book What It Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World

LOL. LMAO. LOLSOB, even.

"Anything could happen, and whether we act or not has everything to do with it." @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social, Hope in the Dark

we're getting gayer !!!!

For clarity, the week this was published in 2023, the national average wastewater detection of Covid-19 was in the same category it is now - and in the Midwest, there was *less* Covid detected in the wastewater than there is now. www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVI...

Heads-up for those who have purchased Amazon's Kindle ebooks: Starting Feb. 26, Amazon is removing feature that allows you to download purchased books to a computer (which is useful for backup or converting to formats compatible with non-Kindle e-readers) www.theverge.com/news/612898/...

Important update! I've been following the nasal covid vaccine carefully because it could provide real lasting immunity (and finally let me stop masking indoors.) There's a lot of encouraging progress, with some caveats. But lack of gov't funding for trials (even before RFK Jr) is a huge problem.

"To refuse to participate in the shaping of our future is to give it up. Do not be misled into passivity either by false security (they don't mean me) or by despair (there's nothing we can do). Each of us must find our work and do it." Audre Lorde, 1982 speech at Harvard, "Learning from the 60s"

Hey All: Google is pulling the "automatically on for anyone over 18" bullshit with Gemini that the Dropbox did for its AI, but I can't afford to ditch Google Drive/Docs/Workspace. If you have a personal Google Account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off...

17 states are literally suing to make it okay to kill me and people like me. Abled allies, please show up. I haven't seen much from you in the last five years. I want to believe you'll be there now. Will you be?

What's a single task that might make your life a little better? I just finished doing a proper full wheelchair maintenance routine with all the cleaning, dismantling my casters, and WD-40 and my chair feels like a fucking DREAM right now. It's been squeaking for months and my relief is palpable 😭

We're gonna need more and better science communicators In These Times so here are my top tips:

Being “against” accessibility means being against the needs of your future self and the needs of those who have no choice in needing accessibility in the present.

I'm always conscious of the danger of turning Eco's Ur-Fascism essay into scripture; he himself cautioned that his list of typical features was not a system of necessary conditions. All the same, I'm really struck by how the current US govt is hell bent on ticking ALL the boxes. Let's recap! +

Been thinking a lot about the concept of a choir, how when you have many voices singing, everyone has a chance to breathe. Some days you're singing. Some days you're just breathing. That's not just okay, that's the nature of singing, especially when you need to raise your voice with others. /

Dear workers who have not previously organized in a hostile workplace: 1) Do not use your company's messaging system to talk to your coworkers 2) Do not use company hardware (laptops, phones) to talk to your coworkers. 3) Do not sign up to receive organizing msgs with your company email address

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

well that alt text got me crying on a Tuesday morning

An awesome way to support diversity & access efforts: learn some ASL to help make the world more accessible! I've taken a year of classes at various levels with Queer ASL and I absolutely love them. The teachers and leadership are all Deaf/HH as well as 2SLGBTQIA+ and allies are welcome to learn.

Hi, I am @motherjones.com' disability reporter. In the following weeks, I am very interested in hearing how tariff nonsense impacts getting your meds and medical equipment. My email to get in touch is [email protected]. Reposts appreciated.

Big damn heroes

Listening to Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Shaping Worlds by @adriennemareebrown.bsky.social today, and this quote from Detroit organizer Morgan Mann Willis stood out to me.

Today I discovered this unexpected marigold amid the annual letting-go of wintertime gardening. What are some unlooked-for joys keeping you going through the exhaustion of recent events?
