Anyone else with diversity supplements on their R grant has had the NGA in commons replaced by a random rtf file?

We need to make sure that everyone understands how important science is for EVERYONE not just for scientists...

great piece from Kit on how to counter to threat to science in the US

I'm hiring a lab manager to start this summer/fall, to work on transformative experience, identity change, and empathy in the digital age. Details here: www.crockettlab.org/research-spe... Please share!

From Kit Yates at the University of Bath. UK and other non-US scientists must act to support our US colleagues: Silence will not shield scientists from the consequences of an increasingly hostile political landscape. kityates.substack.com/p/uk-and-oth...

Accepting a graduate student in lab is a long term financial commitment, which is nearly impossible to make at this point. Also watch out for overall hiring slow-downs at all levels in science: you don't need a freezing hire for this to happen, it will start to take place organically - already has.

This is the text of the bullshit email all federal government employees just received from the Office of Personnel Management (or are about to receive).

Alice wants to know if you are OK on this #Caturday. She also wants to let you know she supports the scientists in her life. #SupportScience

Another dataset I like is from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program, which has maps of the US that show we fixed the acid rain problem by implementing stricter emission controls on power plants. nadp.slh.wisc.edu/maps-data/nt...

We need facts as never before. 3 years after Putin invaded Ukraine, I spent 24 hours with combat medics on the Ukrainian frontline. Their courage, compassion, dedication & skill are astounding. Please read & please never stop standing up for Ukraine. 🇺🇦 www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

U.S. early-career researchers struggling amid chaos Uncertain funding, government firings, and distressed universities hit vulnerable groups especially hard www.science.org/content/arti...

I’ve come to learn many people don’t know this!

This well-referenced page includes personal stories from those terminated, with links to share your story. Congressman Ro Khanna and the House Science Committee are surveying the impact of these cuts.

I feel the same way, cat. #caturday

Viruses exist. They are NOT exosomes. This claim is misinformation that ignores decades of virology, cell biology, and molecular biology. Yet, this claim of "viruses do not exist" or are exosomes your body makes to "detoxify" is frequently encountered. Let’s look at it. 🧵👇 1/9

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

Right now there is an outbreak of measles in Texas and another outbreak in New Mexico. Here is the latest report from the Texas Health Department www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/...

SPJ strongly condemns the White House’s ongoing exclusion of @apnews.com journalists. Every American should be concerned when those in power attempt to reshape media access to serve their own interests. Read the full statement: www.spj.org/spj-decries-...

In Oregon (and I'm sure elsewhere), food banks are stretched to their limit, with some feeding more people than they have any time since the Great Depression. That's before cuts to SNAP and other programs. Your local food bank needs help, mostly in the form of cash. www.opb.org/article/2025...

PLOS has issued a statement on recent US Executive Orders and scientific integrity. We are determined to stand firmly behind our mission, our values and our principles, and against any attempt at censorship or undermining of the core principles of scientific inquiry. plos.io/3D4O8cH

Honored to be interviewed by @naturemethods.bsky.social about my lab philosophy Many thanks to Vivien Marx @vivienm.bsky.social for writing this and the many lab members past and present who have collaborated scientifically. nature.com/articles/s41...

Minnesota Reformer reports that NIH budget cuts could jeopardize hundreds of medical studies at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. Reduced funding may impact research infrastructure and future medical advancements.

The City of Boston is leading 40+ mayors, cities, and counties in an amicus brief against the Trump Administration's drastic and illegal cuts to federal research funding—cuts that will lead to immediate job losses nationwide.

It's a very big day for universities and other research institutions affected by the Trump administration's cut to NIH research payments. @aniloza.bsky.social outlines what will be on the table at this morning's hearing. www.statnews.com/2025/02/20/t...

Cuts to research funding and the anti-science tenor of government policies are already prompting universities to cut back on post-graduate admissions. www.statnews.com/2025/02/19/t...

“We’re f*cked” is what the scientific review officer had to say about the current situation at NIH. As someone with a grant currently somewhere in the ether awaiting a theoretical review that may never come and another that’s funded but on the chopping block, I tend to agree.

The US is seeing multiple current measles outbreaks, one of which is one of the worst in years, and Health Secretary RFK Jr.’s personal organization, which he told the US Senate he would not seek to divest from, is telling people “measles has health benefits.”

We're introducing an important label to the @medsky.info misinformation labeler today: Racial Bias. There are many examples of racial bias, including the false belief that Black patients have better immune systems & higher pain tolerance compared to white patients.

You can tell Nancy Mace stopped paying attention to biology after the first month of 5th grade because 1 in 500 people born with male phenotypes have XXY chromosomes and 1 in 20K born as “biological males” actually have XX chromosomes. Even “biological sex” isn’t actually binary anywhere in nature.

Important new detail: the Trump admin intends to require 35d rather than 15d from notice in federal register to meetings of IC Councils, study sections, etc. Pure sabotage.

We are now finding bird flu in deer mice and house mice in Washington State. H5N1 is advancing along the evolutionary ladder—affecting birds, mammals, and humans. This is not speculation; it’s a timeline.

SCOOP: The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, arguably the nation's most powerful scientific organization, is bending to political pressure and removing terms like "health equity" from pending reports. Members are not happy. Story by me: www.statnews.com/2025/02/20/n...
