The idea for a vactrain, or hyperloop, goes back at least a century. It was always a non-starter: it requires a minimum curve radius of 25 miles, and calls for vacuum pump facilities with 100% reliability to work. My favorite version of this vaporware was the Swissmetro, from 1974... 🧵

NEW: White House says the arrest and deportation of student activist & legal US resident, Mahmoud Khalil, is a blueprint for more. The final line here is chilling. The White House specifically says Khalil was not breaking the law. No evidence, no due process, no crime. He was just disappeared.

I'm an American Jew, and I have spent considerable time studying Jewish history. I feel safer in a world in which demonstrators on behalf of the Palestinian people are free to express their views, not one in which guys who sieg heil at rallies claim they are protecting me.

MUSK: A sophisticated cyberattack from Ukraine took out Twitter's servers REALITY: Twitter's servers were not secured properly and were publicly visible Great explainer here from @lhn.bsky.social www.wired.com/story/x-ddos...

It's been a stressful day. I'll just scroll a bit to chill out. So long as I avoid politics, it shoudn be fine. ... What the actual fuck!

Moving right on immigration: no evidence that it weakens the far right Cutting social and public spending: solid evidence that it strengthens the far right So what does the Labour party - obsessing over the threat by Reform - do? Moves right on immigration and cuts social spending

America: Europe needs to stand up for itself America: NO not like that

It is the fourth anniversary today of the best lede for a newspaper article ever. I love the Irish. ☘️

Yes, yours

We have a clearer path to energy abundance than we do to AGI, and it's likely to be upon us sooner, and it will be as or more transformative to human civilization, and we talk about it about 1/1000 as much.

The problem: 1. I can only think when I'm alone. 2. My career requires me to think all the time. 3. My career/life allow me no time alone. So much white-collar work involves taking intellectually successful people out of the environment that made them successful, and expecting it to work.

Just gonna point out this is literally what the English Civil War was about. Ended with us chopping the king's head off.

you’re fired. wait you’re rehired. email us a list of things you’ve done today wait forget it you’re fired again. come back your job was important. you’re fired. or hired. come in to the office. wait the office has no computers go home. we are the department of government efficiency.

Something else that's "unsustainable" is Labour's sky-high-but-wafer-thin parliamentary majority, if it keeps punching its own voters in the face.

No, Democrats, these little auction signs aren't it. You're acting like Wes Anderson characters who don't understand that they're in a Tarantino movie.

If you're wondering about the vibe in Canada right now, I just got served this ad for a brewhouse that is just a portrait of the White House being burned down. No text, just a bigass picture of the White House burning and a link directly to their menu lolol

Muskrat's gonna love this one.

Good morning, Europe. Nothing unexpected this morning. Back in November, I outlined where the key bottlenecks would emerge if the U.S. withdraws its aid. These are: - Rocket artillery - Patriot interceptors - Long-range strike weapons 1/4 missilematters.substack.com/p/can-europe...

Presumably this was the plan all along and the spat with Zelenskyy in the White House the premeditated excuse.

the united states needs a cryptocurrency reserve in case it needs to import massive amounts of heroin without the united states detecting it or as a hedge against the collapse of the united states

This all points to a potential reality in which the list of critical minerals to stabilize and ensure supply security over for decarbonization might be a lot shorter and less costly than previously imagined. #EnergySky

NEW: A searing editorial in the The Kyiv Independent. “It’s time to say it plainly. America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not, and they should speak up. “A president just disrespected America in the Oval Office. It wasn’t Zelensky.” @kyivindependent.com

A big question for Sunday's London meeting: can Ukraine be kept in the fight without US military aid? According to western officials the materiel they use to fight, from boots to bullets, is sourced 55% in Ukraine, 25% from Europe, and just 20% from the US 1/

MAGA fellow travellers find the UKs consensus on this difficult to understand, but in some ways it's quite simple The British national myth is rooted in "the darkest hour" of a small island facing off against a fascist invader steamrolling across Europe. Britain looks at Ukraine, and it sees itself

This scrum of pot-bellied, sunken-chested betas trying to bully an all-black clad badass Eastern European wasteland survivor while dressed like Men’s Wearhouse mannequins is peak cinema.

As a kid watching Red Dawn in the 80s, I definitely though the Russian takeover of the US would involve at least *some* tanks

The most shameful day for the United States of America in any of our lifetimes.

some people think i'm bonkers but i just think i'm free man i'm just livin my life there's nothing crazy bout me

We're going to see some big changes in the politics of net zero in the next few years as the cost savings for households start to kick in

The cost of reaching net zero in the UK by 2050 is now predicted to be just 0.2% of GDP (about ÂŁ4 billion per year). Spread this far and wide. It reveals Reform and the Conservatives' opposition to net zero for being 'too expensive' as just plain wrong.

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”

It has come to my attention that it’s been a while since we talked about that time we adopted a very old hamster who was expected to die imminently but then he went completely bald and lived two more years looking like this

Remarkable: Merz wants to discuss reforming debt brake in the *outgoing* Bundestag, where CDU/CSU+SPD+Greens still have over 2/3 of seats, before new Bundestag is constituted by 25 March. Greens already signalled willingness this morning.

At a London bus stop. The Brits are telling it like it is.

I hope there are many there to show support to Ulraine.

Having failed to exclude Zelenskyy, they sought to bully him. Having failed to bully him, they sought to bribe him. Having failed to bribe him, they sought to discredit him. Maybe they will get round him one way or another, but you can see how frustrated they are at him holding on.

Here we go!

white nationalist men are too emotional to be in charge

Hands off.

You cannot determine whether you saved or cost money based solely on one side of the ledger. Example: I saved my household $2K by not paying the mortgage.
