I've always gotten the impression Miyazaki is a resourceful director, between things like that, turning a struggling project into Demon's Souls, and the measured structure of Sekiro. Weaving the concept of "stilled time" into the narrative did feel like a move to work around some challenges of VR.

I think most of the complaints centered around gameplay. If you were looking to Déraciné hoping FromSoftware would push the boundaries of VR, it's fair to be disappointed, but if you want Miyazaki to read you a bedtime story, that's basically where the game's heart is at.

The issues in the Network Test didn't really seem to be performance related, there were just a lot of connectivity problems because the server was constantly overwhelmed.

Either way, I don't think this is indicative of the future of FromSoftware, or a sign they've abandoned "real" Soulslikes, but more a studio known for going their own way just doing exactly that. I'm certain that there will still be something in these games that speaks to the same creative drive.

Also, while both are pushing multiplayer, the two games do seem to have very distinct ways of approaching it. Nightreign's cooperative roguelike expeditions sound like they'll be very different from The Duskbloods, with its seemingly more competitive PvPvE angle.

I was already planning on buying a Switch 2 just for the Switch 2. I've always been a Nintendo fan, and especially a fan of Zelda and Pokemon, so it was a foregone conclusion.

I think when we do get the next "real" Soulslike, whatever exactly that means, we'll be able to look back at everything they did inbetween and see how it influenced them to grow as a studio. But even then, I don't think these games are worth immediately writing off as just side projects or anything.

Both games feel very experimental, but that could be a good thing. If making two multiplayer-focused games like this doesn't push FromSoftware to improve their online, I don't know what will, and the Champion-based gameplay allows for a lot more exploration of what the player character can do.

My generous read is that it may genuinely be kind of a coincidence. Nightreign was apparently Ishizaki's own pitch for a game as a first time director, and I feel like Nintendo seems to be wanting to lean much harder into multiplayer with the Switch 2, so The Duskbloods was probably shaped by that.

I'm just primed to expect a bat, given the heavy Vampire stylings and the apparent wings. It doesn't necessarily have to map 1:1 with a real species of bat, since we're already pretty far offscript with the feathers.

Everything connected to FromSoftware in the trailer has been deeply confusing.

The official word from FromSoftware's website is apparently:
"a PvPvE title with online multiplayer at its core, where up to 8 players vie for supremacy among themselves and against challenging foes." Which sounds like it rules out the chance they're just poorly describing regular Souls multiplayer.

Not much point getting too mired in speculation though when we're already slated to get an interview soon that should clarify a lot of the questions the trailer left us with. FromSoftware definitely seems to be going through an experimental phase though.

From what little we've seen, I get the impression you'll pick from Champions to play as like Nightreign. There does also seem to be an implication that you can work together to defeat bosses, not just fight each other, so it may still be somewhat possible to play it like a traditional Soulslike.

As I've mentioned before, Miyazaki has talked about his desire to branch out and explore other genres, so it seems like this could be him taking his shot at a (relatively) large-scale competitive co-op. How well that's actually going to play out is the big question though.

Given the existence of the "C Button", and the general focus on multiplayer throughout the Direct, it actually makes a kind of sense that this is the game Nintendo would get FromSoftware to make. It feels like they're maybe pushing for multiplayer to be a part of the Switch 2's identity.

I look forward to losing to my own preview card, because one of the people in my playgroup plays a Kaalia deck already tuned for blink effects and I'm sure Siegebreaker will find a home there.

They do pass one of the benchmarks for good intense sour candy, which is that it feels like you could easily injure yourself if you ate enough of them in a single sitting. I had 4 in a row and I could feel a chemical burn starting to set in.

It was nice to see inside an AC cockpit, though I'd be interested to know how much came from the showrunners or FromSoftware. The series naturally features a lot of deviation, given the multiple eras of AC lore, so it's probably not a definitive statement on how they work in the games either way.

Obviously, casting Keanu Reeves feels like a bit of a tell for how they were going to play it, but I can't say I necessarily fault it. It naturally makes sense to prioritize trying to hook new fans, given this type of product, and it was still kept close enough to not actively offend existing fans.
