New Pope Leo blasts non-religious people, saying (quite shockingly) that 'lack of faith' comes from 'the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity'
We'll remain composed in the face of such abject nastiness, but it's untrue to say the least

A hateful thing to say. People whose approach to life is not faith-based have done enormous good, majority non-religious societies have been some of the strongest proponents of human dignity and solidarity. Why is the BBC just printed this unchallenged? If it's "news", it should be balanced.

Do you have any idea how whiny you sound?
I am an atheist. You know what I don't do? Spend my time thinking about what religious people think about me. Because I dont care... Because Im an atheist
You should sit back smell the roses and try not giving a fuck
You have created your own fucking religion
Paragraph two criticises those without faith, although many humanitarian efforts are lead that way. I haven't seen evidence that those traits are more likely in atheists.
But some insist that liberal rationalism is the absolute truth and only the irrational would doubt it.
Was quite surprising to find out how many people think that's evil woke postmodernism.
Otherwise he just another religious bigot. 🤷🏻♂️
It's a bad faith take.
My first wife divorced me for developing epilepsy, and asserted in court I was possessed by demons. The judge agreed and made me homeless for eleven years. This in XXI Century USA.
For example, you might have faith that things will get better in the future, even when current circumstances are difficult.
Honestly, I think you overreacted
I'm an atheist who studied physics and there is no absolute certainty in science. Everything is a matter of belief.
I didn't realise how popular the classical Newtonian model still was until quite late in life.
Sometimes life feels like a computer program. So someone must’ve coded it.
But I don't think I need to invoke a designer to explain what we can observe now either.
Your point of view is totally valid, though, and I respect that :)
If you believe that the only justice in life is found in this world while you are alive, then it follows that you should treat others as you would like to be treated, with kindness, dignity, and compassion.
As someone who has sometimes referred to myself as a humanist*, your social media team has often embarrassed me so much as to reconsider.
Do you just let the work experience kid loose on here?
The same zealotry, lack of critical thinking, and sensitivity as a new fundamentalist-turned-atheist youtuber.
Grow up, for gods' sake.
Yet religious leaders and religious heads of state get a free pass to say utterly nasty things about good, decent people who don't believe in gods.
Want to die? They'll fight for your right to do so. Want to transition? They'll quote the Heritage Foundation at you.
Family.
Country.
Self.
Could he not speak for himself!?
Might be helpful to post what he actually said. Yes!?
Not that “to be an atheist is to be the root of all sin and evil”
Signed,
An actual atheist.
Without faith, you can’t do anything. You need to believe (to have faith) in yourself, in your family, in a better community
The pope is the head of a conservative institution that's almost 2000 years old, but some of its ideologyand activity is pretty humanist, so think about it?

Empty talk and promises about a utopian future will not feed the hungry or defend the vulnerable and persecuted.
Many churches do that though, DAILY.
I'm so glad I outgrew my whiny reddit antitheist phase when I was a teenager. This shit is pathetic.
Still, he's just a bloke in frock.
"A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family & so many other wounds that afflict our society"
There's no causation there, and its not a Venn diagram with a single set.
(He was also talking about "Christians" who profess faith but do not actually believe, so you know...context is key.)
I only had to replace one word, is it still not supposed to be offensive
