I used to have an internet show and when I got my first piece of fanmail, my (more famous) co-host smiled at me and she said, "You haven't made it until you get hate mail"
Also that a not insignificant amount of accounts you see commenting aren’t even people at all. Just a bunch of bots payed to make certain opinions seem more credible than they are.
Basically, yeah. A different version of the "neither for you nor against you" bit is that most people aren't greatly good or evil...they're just selfish & shortsighted. That's been my experience so far, anyway.
We live in a time where assholiness is encouraged and prized. Plus being online turns borderline assholes into full asshats. Thirdly, gambling. Sports gambling turns fans into freaks. Finally, come on now, misogyny and maga miscreants. It has nothing to do with you or any female sports journos work
It's football I don't really care. I Haven't watched a game in 30 years. Nothing worse than a bunch of cry baby rich guys. But if it's your thing go for it. It beats working for a living.
And even easier when you realize that the vast majority of the assholes are either working for Russia to sow dissent or bots instructed to do the same. A few are really assholes. But really, not that many. Much of what you see is a PsyOp. It’s been well studied.
I just remind myself that people use the internet the same way people use a rage room. Violence without consequences rooted in misery and self loathing. Everyone comes to the internet with bias and physiological reactivity. I try to ignore them now. ♥️

Well, those are the guys who have small dicks, but who think the fact they have a dick at all makes them more qualified than any woman ever could be. It is almost as if having a small dick defines what they are: small dicks. Be a grower, not a shower.
I'm not sure what to do about those people at this point. There used to be remedial programs to help the mentally challenged integrate into society but I'm sure DOGE is cutting all of that out now. Might just be out of luck.

I find this more tolerable when you realize so many of them are bot programs, so many of them use AI programs for their “knowledge”, and 99.99% of them are cowards if they ever saw you face-to-face.
My old man used to remind me that I can learn anything from anyone as everyone knows at least one thing I do not know. Even a troll or a bot has something to give me, even if it is just to learn how they work, operate or exist.
It’s also become a bit easier since I learned that troll bots are real. Now, when someone is really going at it and making ludicrous, nonsensical comments it’s like, “HOW can you THINK that?!!!” Oh. They don’t. They aren’t real.

I never understood the hate for women covering sports. Plenty of men haven’t played, yet can cover the sport well (looking at you @benjaminsolak.bsky.social) but women can’t? Makes no sense. I enjoy it so long as the person speaking knows what they are talking about
Very true. It’s like society in general. Once I realized that I will never, ever again see the guy who cut me off in traffic or said something rude at a game, my life got much better.
Just shifts the issue to something else really; means it’s not personal, but it still irritates me that there are people who will do that sort of thing just for the sake of it. You shouldn’t engage with them but you don’t want them feeling that they’ve won because you’re not fighting

There's a study that confirmed that people who like to be assholes online also tend to be assholes IRL. That cleared things up for me. Online "trolls", when not bots, are people so isolated by their own assholeness that they seek attention online to fill the empty void they have inside.
Fandoms in the internet era don't even represent fans anymore. They represent people who exist to complain about something. If you believe the internet people who watched Star Trek and Star Wars for decades just discovered that the shows are anti authoritarian like five years ago. It's hilarious.
It’s hard to say in this crazy environment but I would bet a lot is motivated not by sport. I came at you hoping you would say something about Jackie Robinson being erased. We are in the fight of our lives and people still don’t get it. You are in the public eye like it or not.

one of the best consequences of being a Dallas fan is they always book my team late to everyone else's chagrin so I basically have to watch everyone else just to make time move faster.
Those playoff games have taken years off my life, man. It's not even that they lose, it's that you can bet they'll find a uniquely horrible way to do it lol
I give Dallas a bit of grace on those Niners losses because they were just a better team. That Green Bay loss at home a couple years ago was a disaster.

This is gonna sound sorta counterintuitive, but a piece of advice I give to women in sports: If someone’s being a dick, go check out his TL. You’ll quickly see that hes not actually mad at what you said; he’s mad that you exist in this space at all.
I’ve found you can safely discard the thoughts of 99% of guys whose profile photos is them wearing sunglasses in a car. Massive overlap with the “mad at women in sports” population.
