the guys who scold you for not following "bluesky etiquette" have been screaming the same thing since there were like 500 people on here. they will still be screaming it if this site gets to 50 million. you learn to ignore them eventually

Bluesky etiquette scolding is an early symptom of clout poisoning. It might not lead to anything more serious, but like elevated blood pressure, can lead to worse outcomes if a person doesn't keep an eye on it.
Ahhhh. Okay dang. I don't really like that it you have to modify the post content itself. I'll probs stick to just putting mine manually. Definitely a help for some though!
I also saw there's a way to get a bot to write alt text for an image too but you have to reply. Also a bit cumbersome.
lmao justin i volunteer for that feed. and yeah you just put alt4me in the post or alt text box and it’ll pop up in the feed and someone will reply with the alt text when possible
it's a tag you can use to get someone to volunteer to write alt text for you! you can invoke it on your images or on other peoples, literally just type # alt4me (without the space)
if you're just mentioning the feed by name but not requesting alt services, please use /Alt4Me (with a slash). This helps declutter the feed and facilitate volunteers' works. The space actually doesn't work to disable feed detection.
Using #nofeed also works, to pass this info around!
Do not apologize, the feed disabling system is indeed a little bit tricky. It is coded so that any variant of /Alt4Me (with space, without space, with "for" in the place of "4") can be detected, this way people can write it however they want.
it's absolutely helpful! alt text is read out loud by screen readers for the visually impaired, but it can also help people without vision impairments. like it can help with badly compressed in-image text (e.g. transcribing it), or provide context, or even provide a backup if the image isn't loading
i don't have ocular impairments but sometimes i have sensory issues that make processing an image a bit difficult and alt text can really help out. the other day i saw an image with a bunch of important text that was compressed, and i couldn't read most of it. an alt text transcript would've helped
There are 6 million people with vision loss in the US. There are pretty good odds that some of your followers could be. Even if not, it's also useful when the pictures won't load
search “bluesky ettiquette” if you really want to know — mostly “add alt text to your images” and “block instead of quote dunking to keep the worst people from gaining traction”
And so, the seeds of discontent are sewn. It's still a free nation and a free app, so call things whatever you wish.
A post is a post by any other name.😀
This place have Ben absolute crickets up to a couple a weeks ago. Just a couple of hundred elder millennials posting like it’s 2012. We can safely disregard their opinions
yes? but? it's still nice to add alt-text to images because then they show up in search. it's still nice to block and not dunk on trolls because then they don't get engagement they get nuked to oblivion.

The only "etiquette" i know is
- Call posts skeets ironically
- Use alt text with your image posts for better accessibility
- Block/mute and don't interact with bots or bad actors
- Tag your NSFW Content appropriately
Be warned; some people will tell you that you have to like their posts before responding to them, as if it were an immutable law of nature. This is where the mute button comes in handy.
Being new I didn't even know that was a thing. I do have to say that "Skeet/Skeets" is strange and dejectable sounding names for a post I have ever heard.
And what, pray tell, is bluesky etiquette'? I'm just trying to read some interesting stuff, 'meet' some nice people, and while away some time. Hope I don't accidently insult anyone.

Honestly calling it etiquette almost makes people more inclined NOT to follow it but both of those are very good principles I personally hope people will try to abide by over here
Hi there, I just wanted to say thanks for the follow. I am so sorry about your husband. My husband has it too. Cancer Sucks.
I think etiquette is to be nice, have your bio show something about you and post. You seem to have those things already. But others might have more suggestions.

Hey I used to have to scroll through pages and pages of dogbrained bluecheck posts in the replies before reaching the good stuff, I can deal with those guys
way back in the day the Mastodon purity patrol used to scream at me constantly about proper platform etiquette - you get from early adopters on every platform when it starts to expand.
I have, and to be honest, it's not that big a deal: just common sense stuff about alt text for inclusion, and not giving trolls oxygen in the comments.
The latter has been particularly useful: I just block trolls and racists and keep myself sane.
I personally associate “skeet” with Lil Jon ejaculating. I do not associate it with posts. This is why i say posts, just eliminate rapper jissom from the equation.
Call them whatever you want just don’t tell me I can’t call them skeets. I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old and this is how it needs to be for me.
the reason i never made a masto account is i was not willing to use an app where my posts were toots because that's a word that your uptight churchgoing grandmother uses instead of fart and my posts are bad but they're not rancid church farts
I like bleats I think it’s cute but practically I will probably still call them tweets when I’m not thinking. I know I still say rt cause it’s easier than repost
Once "X the everything app" dies for good and the last vestiges of Twitter are gone "tweet" will become a completely neutral term for "social media text post", thus completing its linguistic fossilization
Never saw anything besides “please add alt text” and “be mindful of others”. Don’t know what’s the issue here and if people have been outrageously rude or anything, but most posts on “etiquette” I came across weren’t really problematic imho.

The only Bluesky etiquette worth following is calling it a "skeet"
But genuinely policing people's posts is Omega cringe

Thank you for understanding!
Seriously what even IS Bluesky etiquette? Forgive me I was never on Twitter so I don't know how to use this UI format either being that it's similar.
Try to keep the irony low and the honesty high in your answer.
Genuinely curious as to what impression early bsky gave you.
A post is a post by any other name.😀
so some of this is just what works.

I would love to learn more bsky etiquette like that.

Nothing to hard to get
Call it post, skeet, blort. Anyone getting hung up on what people call it aren’t serious people.

Very standoffish to me.
But I'm here and learning the app AND that's that.

💙
It’s my first day here.
And I think skeet is like fetch. It's not going to happen
I can see how my post could be misread 😅
I have much to learn! 🙄
**whispers**: (but using alt text is still a good idea and you should do it)
The latter has been particularly useful: I just block trolls and racists and keep myself sane.
Anyone pushing arbitrary rules like that to turn this place into Twitter 2 should go right back there
Examples:
Tweet the emergency.
Bleet the emergency.
Flutter the emergency.
Skeet the emergency.
Skeet means toss or throw as in skeet shooting. Shooting a tossed or thrown clay pigeon.
I heard about skeet shooting before I knew what a skeet blanket was 😁
i think the butterfly should become a sheep though, sheep bleat AND they look like clouds
