all these fucking masters of the universe couldn’t realize that he was actually going to do the thing that he, at length and repeatedly, said he was going to do.

A lot of it was in that book— but not “Trade War with Canada” or “Elon is in Charge Now”
That said, we were certainly warned by Trump’s insane ranting in every single rally and interview, and by the wretched hive of scum and villainy that he chose to surround himself with
I guess there was a lot of hope based on him not doing anything economically self-destructive in term 1, but in retrospect, this seems like Mnuchin being basically the greatest Treasury Secretary imaginable.
Trump's brain melting over the last 8 years and him being much much closer to death (and never facing an election again) probably heavily contributed here too.
Been said a lot by better than me but the broad lack of relatively normal people to run interference in this admin is the actual disconnect between 1 + 2 I think.
I think Steve Mnunchin both personally is responsible for saving a lot of suffering and in doing so almost certainly causing a lot more a little further down the road.
It's very obvious when he's talking about something he actually cares about, too. Like the fact that he keeps going on about McKinley is not the kind of thing he'd be talking about if he was bluffing.
I guess a plus side is that if we get through this, the next Dem president will be able to restore global free trade and have a massive organic boom in the economy
My delusional hope is that the GOP is, if not destroyed by this, damaged to the extent that they can’t credibly run anyone this radical again. Or, alternatively, a maga splinter movement that splits the conservative vote for decades
IDK man. Look at Britain, they destroyed their own economy over Brexit and are still trying to figure out if they should come crawling back to Brussels. Even if we rebuild global free trade and NATO, we will do so as a diminished nation.
Why would any government trust any agreement with a Democratic president, knowing the next Republican one will rip it up? We will have to give massive concessions to restore normalcy, and I don't think any Dem will be willing to do that for fear of electoral backlash.
First thing the next Democratic president does is repeal the destructive tariffs on ... Blue States. The ones that have direct led to the self-immolation of Red States? We'll need to study those more.
