It is not legal to use red diesel for non-farm work. It should only be used on roads if need to get from one field to another, for example. Otherwise cannot use red diesel.
Perhaps one day, the story about anti ULEZ Zealots cutting down cameras and damaging traffic lights in Hillingdon as fast as TFL can repair them, with local residents having to deal with perpetual traffic light repairs, will make the news.
Interesting. Thanks for that. Just checked and yes, a few, though some of those seem more 'petting zoos' than farms. Given they're so few, exemptions could be provided on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis through a registry rather than a general exemption. Maybe not worth bothering with, though.
Agricultural vehicles are exempt from ULEZ and road tax. Here's a short thread on the unique set of tax breaks received by farming (arguably for good reason, but hardly a sector being discriminated against) 👇
The price of a John Deere 6250R tractor can vary depending on the model year and specifications, but a basic model can cost around £197,904, while a top-of-the-range model can cost closer to £233,283.
Exemption should really only apply to farm vehicles registered to farms in the ULEZ area. I doubt it was intended to cover tractors driving into central London from other parts of the country. Loophole?
Strangely they appear to be exempt but if you live & work in the countryside, surely you should pay ULEZ & Congestion Charge if you drive into London? Red diesel?
I'd like to see a gammon van/taxi driver, or beamer driving Karen, drag that out of the way because they're "going to be late, you inconsiderate bastard."
24 registration, so probably yes. Just like around 96% of cars in London. Yes, hardly anyone pays ULEZ, just as hardly anyone pays IHT. Doesn't stop them moaning about it though.
Has someone done a list of all the BENEFITS that farmers get (and everyone else doesn’t) over and above inheritance tax relief and cheap fuel?
Feel a spreadsheet coming on.
This isn't conspiracy to cause a public nuisance so surely we should see record sentences in line with the Just Stop Oil convictions. Four years at least.
I hope an ambulance does not get held up. Not sure what would happen at Daily Mail hq if this caused someone to not get treatment due to blocking roads …
That’s the cleanest tractor I have seen in a while.
Is it the toy of some Clarkson type who doesn’t actually farm for a living, but rather buys land to avoid inheritance tax?
Driving a tractor into London using agricultural red diesel is just taking the piss. At least the Just Stop Oil protesters paid tax on their travel costs.
Some of the wealthiest folk complaining about their lot.
I know they have a tough job (I spent 3 years at agricultural college (in horticulture)) but still.
I haven't seen many green keepers and golf club members descending on Westminster complaining that they can no longer get around paying tax though, have you?
Not sure I understand what you're saying.
I'm not supporting the farmer's protest and the red diesel exemption hasn't been changed in this budget.
I was just pointing out that some other, perhaps less easy to justify, things get the red diesel exemption.
It's at the top of the cabin, so mud splatter or anything hitched up won't obscure it (though a large trailer would also have a plate). That's the common place to find them.
How many will be arrested for blocking roads etc the same way environmentalists and other groups are? Going to damage a lot of trade in London today but these guys are the real heroes and not just some scruffy oils who don't like oil.
JSO protestors and organisers got 4+ years in jail for this.
I assume these farmers will all be subject to the same? Including clarkson for organising it?
They voted to be allowed to grow crops they could sell without the EU telling them what to grow. The meagre subsidy was paid to land owners who bought Range Rovers, not farmers who need tractors.
Red diesel is taxed far less than regular diesel in order to reduce farmers' expenses and meant to only be used off-road (with leeway for driving on public roads going to and returning from farming activities afaik.)
Whilst the vehicle may be ULEZ exempt, red diesel can only be used for agricultural purposes. Does this constitute an agricultural purpose, and are HMRC out there dipping the fuel tanks?
Comments
Congestion charge - exempt
Ulez charge - exempt
Vehicle tax - exempt
And now they want to be exempt from paying less than half the inheritance tax of anyone else and have 10 years to pay it off, interest free.
Poor, hard done by landowners.
#LBC
What’s the betting the arch hypocrite Farage will be out in support ?
Did the farmer glue it to the road, d'ya reckon?
(Am I doing this right?)
Feel a spreadsheet coming on.
Another tax perk for farmers.

Red diesel?
No other family businesses get these kinds of IHT breaks. Producing food is not an excuse for it.
There's nothing worse than rich people complaining about not being rich enough.
I know they have a tough job (I spent 3 years at agricultural college (in horticulture)) but still.
There are numbers in this thread:

Another perk of being a farmer that they conveniently fail to mention..

I bet many of them won't have bothered to pay.
They can pay tomorrow before they end up getting a PCN.
(read millionaire land owners😉)
*Please note gif is not an accurate legal response to the use of red diesel when used to power a vehicle for non agricultural reasons.

Double standards.
Why would tractors be exempt?
