Having worked for a Navy Special Warfare command in a supporting staff role for over 3 years, I will gladly call BULLSHIT on your comment.
It takes an amazing amount of willpower confidence and intelligence to make it in that community. Some of the most impressive people I've worked with in 30 yrs.
What these idiots don’t understand is that in a conflagration the fire can move from rooftop to rooftop, just as would a crown fire in a forest; you don’t need tress to sustain the burn …..
She's short sighted...Georgia uses pine needles for landscaping ground cover. Obviously a Trump University washout. Kudzu was such a genius stroke last time...
Just "cut down all the trees" to slow climate change says Zinke - typical idiotic, unreasoned, pseudo-science, faux MAGA "solution"; then Zinke acts smug to deal with his cognitive dissonance for destroying his own children's future home; PROFIT$ is all Putin/Trump/MAGA corporate cronies care for.
For many people it was all they had. They didn’t have time to go to the store when they were running for their lives. Maybe now is not the time for this. 🤷♀️
I don’t know anything about that person, but I assume he’s from Texas… because how else could we fucking know unless he wears his stupid dipshit Woody hat.
Holy shit one of my MAGA co workers was giving this solution today and said he heard it from Joe Rogan’s podcast. They literally don’t fact check anything he says and then regurgitate it in public.
Once again, for the slow people in the back: For a mirade of reasons, the main one being that without trees, we will have little to no oxygen, which we need to breath in order to live or that the planet will rapidly heat up and become a desert... WE CANNOT CUT DOWN ALL OF THE TREES.
You'd think a former secretary of the interior would have some understanding of this, but then you realize it's still ryan zinke and he was always shit at his job.
Actually cutting down trees to stop a wild fire is common practice it is known as making a fire line. As for cutting down trees to prevent wildfires that is just plain stupid.
Watch and behold. A ”raked forest”. With that term, tRumpist referred to Finnish way of taking care of forest. It’s a bad translation, but finnish really just doesn’t translate that well. The point is to keep the forest clutter free thus controlling the risks of anything burning.
YES! We call it controlled burning. We burn instead of raking. Also, "cutting down trees" is part of the treatment when the forest is overstocked. This makes the forest healthier and might slow down the fire so it can be controlled. FORESTRY at work.
75% of my country is covered in forests, forest industry is a ginormous thing here, has been for centuries. We, as a nation, cannot afford waisting our precious green gold with recklessness.
Saw him hammered at the Lincoln Memorial when he was Interior Secretary. Showing around some people and he was stumbling drunk. Said, "I'm the secretary of the Interior, I can do whatever the hell I want".
Hey morons, why not build homes like battleships, all welded steel with nothing to burn. That's as stupid a statement as cutting down all the trees. What FUCKEN morons!
Having trained with a wildland fire crew, I can more or less guarantee you that removing trees in some areas is an inevitable part of wildland fire mitigation.
As pertains to the fires in LA, that partly means creating a larger buffer between the urban/wildland interface.
Also, in non-urbanized wilderness, the strongest weapon you have against the spread of fire is exposed a mineral layer to provide a break from the fire crossing ground vegetation.
There’s no water being piped to the middle of a forested mountain to plug a hose into a hydrant & put out the flames.
As someone who's witnessed wildfires, I have to agree... in the right environment.
But the LA fires are wind-driven, and the fires have a tendency to jump great distances.
Can a mountainside prone to landslides and earthquakes, maintain a mineral layer of sufficient size to prevent wind-blown fire?
So… in ANY wildfire, the impact of wind blowing embers and creating spitfires that jump your breaks is a problem. They can even jump rivers in many cases. That’s going to be part of the challenge regardless. Especially given fire’s tendency to create its own weather after it gets hot enough.
I'm familiar with East Coast forest fires. Fighting them means plowing firebreaks, setting backfires, not cutting down trees. There are sand roads that act as mineral layers, but fires do jump, esp when they climb pine trees.
We don't have the Santa Ana winds, or mountains.
What Zinke is (probably) talking about, RE: managed forests is a little overkill. Old growth typically stands up better against wildfires than new growth, but where there is new growth, controlled burns, and keeping a gap between developed and wild vegetated spaces is helpful.
Having seen Only the brave (RIP, hot shots), I agree completely, but very likely this representative is not referring to that he’s referring to basically chopping down forests when no wildfire is not even threatening danger
Is crime legal where y'all live? It's like not even worth the muscles it takes to eyeroll anymore. I don't want to burn even half a calorie to mock these numbskulls.
In 2024, Zinke's home state of Montana experienced 2,131 wildfires burning approximately 344,466 acres. Notable recent Montana wildfires: Harris Mountain Fire, Alder Creek Fire, Horse Gulch Fire, Remington Fire.
I live in the desert. Fireworks are banned here because of brush fires. Family in the Texas panhandle who’re volunteer firefighters who fight GRASS fires during fire season… bad idea is an understatement on this one. 🤦♀️
Yes he is but unfortunately most of the Montanans love him. I was born and raised in Montana, would never even consider going back there, totally ruined. Gianforte is a real prize too.
Gianforte is equally a piece of shit. These rich guys that think they run this state....bah! It's probably a good thing none of them are in public often.
Even though he’s our congressman, his primary residence is in Santa Barbara. Maybe he could just stay there and start chopping? Would be less destructive than letting him run around here.
OMG. I had this conversation with a dear friend yesterday "California doesn't do as good of a job of clearing brush and we do (in Arizona)" . Um, you mean taking out entire mountain ranges?
Worked in the woods for 32 years and we did controlled burns to clear/control brush. Brush also can be cleared /cut around saplings in order to release the saplings or increase the growth rate. Have also worked on thinning projects as well.
Take off the hat little boy Zinkee & let smart people take care of this … I’m not a fan of large trees in residential neighborhoods yet Montana has them so let’s mow them down as Montana has had allot of fires
I was told by our forester that the state won't thin the trees or cut away some of the underbrush. Doing that would go a long way to keeping those fires in check and make for healthier woodlands. You don't have to obliterate everything, just ease up on the underbrush.
I learned about the Panama Canal in grade school when I had a "country" project and chose Panama. I don't think American education is as terrible as much as our disdain for education in general. These people willfully reject what they learn for "new" self involved facts.
Uhm, there aren't that many trees in the Santa Monica mountains; it's shrubland and it's burned this way (well, maybe not in January) for thousands of years.
Might not be a bad thing if you think about it. If headed for Florida, Texas, Louisiana, or Georgia the radiation would travel along with the storm & literally make whenever it lands up to when it dies a nuclear wasteland. The GOP would be short a couple of million voters & America would be smaller
We have close to 5 million Democrat voters here in Texas - more than any other state except California and
(sometimes) New York. Our big cities are *very* "blue."
Challenge is we also have more than 6 million Republican voters.
So complex, our esteemed Senator just skated off to Cancun ahead of the storm...again! That or his body-double was sent ahead to jump start the invasion.
Vastly more effective vs. concentrations of population, i.e. cities, which is where voters like I live. Give Gov. Abbott time to get out of the Governor's mansion and make sure the Legislature is out of town, he just might go for doing that here in Austin.
He stole that from Bush the junior.
He thought we should just harvest all the trees.
He never disclosed where we would get a workforce for that.
This country simply must stop electing the village idiots to office.
Sadly my parents started watching it. I saw some today when I was there. Holly shit, it's hard to describe how shamelesly stupid that propaganda is. At least I got my mom to change the channel by ruthlessly mocking the lies & stupidity.

If this is the best the republicans can elect God help this country.
It is a good thing.

But other than that you’re absolutely right.
Win - win. A+ plan for ecological sustainability.
I was kinda diving too deep here not knowing the words I needed in english.

What you suggest seems to me to not apply to the LA region's dangers. It doesn't apply to ours.
Is there a better answer?
We don't have the Santa Ana winds, or mountains.
Like another recent strategy.
Just waiting for one of the rich idiots to market Brawndo.
I haven’t stopped thinking about the film Idiocracy because we’re getting there very quickly 🤪
But hey look who it is!
The 🤡shit show.

They're ignorant idiots.
[Unfortunately, Zinke's talking about clear cutting, not fire breaks]

Something about “rake your forests in California before I send you help!” -Trump

It's a big, politically complex state.
I gotta get new glasses.
