One more note to this bracing essay: the US Constitution, while not being very old, is nonetheless the oldest of all current democratic charters. Democracy is a very new thing in the world, and not deeply rooted.

We appear at one *second* before midnight. 👍🏻
A billion minutes ago, the dawn of Christianity.
A billion cokes ago, yesterday morning.
True democracy would be BAD.
which ones do we choose our leadership more similarly to?
and nobody means that pure democracy when they use a term like, "western democracies"
MAGAts get hung up on the wrong part of this as per usual
again, "republic" only means that the nation isn't embodied by a monarch; it means nothing else about governance at all
A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC IS A FIRM OF DEMOCRACY!
how many times do people need to be told the meme they read is less accurate than complete studies of history, civics, sociology? Repeating one liners doesn't make you look smart.
A republic do not require elected officials in order to be a republic. Learn history.
We are a constitutional republic that has adopted SOME democratic processes.
They are not mutually exclusive, they refer to different aspects of government
Give it up, that "Constitutional Republic nonsense is so 2023
So, we can have "more democracy" by reducing the power of the federal government and returning it to the states. That way more people can vote on specific things at the state level.
Accept the results and move on like we had to with a dementia-riddled old man.
Remember that vaccines are bad and don't get one when your daddy fucks up again ok?
Keep on believing that please, literally.
We can dust off the cobwebs, I have spare knitting needles
Also, the Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace predates the US Constitution by a

das Demokratie auch käuflich ist,
ist eine völlig neue Situation.
Democracy is returning to the USA.
Not the zeitgeist
It was written by genocidal monsters who raped their slaves and then sold off their own children.

Annual general elections are needed to inculcate & celebrate democratic ideals
Their goal is imposing religion on all US citizens, and removing our freedom FROM religion by killing the 1st amendment

The Constitution itself can be read to support either - and we’ve been both.
It’s up to us what we are tomorrow.
The concepts (and name) of democracy and constitution as a form of government originated in ancient Athens circa 508 BCE.
It existed as far back as 500BCE.
The concepts (and name) of democracy and constitution as a form of government originated in ancient Athens circa 508 BCE.
Not everything was democratic before coinage was invented in 800BCE, but very little was hierarchal.
Whatever the local riches are, cocoa pods was the last one I heard of.
The experiment is over but we could reboot it.
Ancient Greece only included free, male Greeks. Immigrants, slaves, women had no vote or rights
Magna Carta was even more limited, defining rights & due process only for male aristocrats
US universal suffrage *was* unique ...
/end
Magna Carta was framed by & for the barons. It later provided a legal framework for others, but its application was based on grace & favor
US founding fathers consciously tried to be inclusive. OK they didn't count women but were visionary for their time!
Nor is this a democracy. It’s a 250 year old axial empire.
Democracy doesn’t play much role in axial societies—societies that use exact trade and coinage for exchange.
The Persians are famous for culturally reconquering their conquerors. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy and its members should be as well.
We liked that idea but owned slaves, so we got this
Guess which type of government the American people just elected?
Democracy is about 2500 years old.
Started in ancient Greece.
The democratic thoughts were brought to America from Europe.
A convicted felon is about to become coronated and still people somehow seem numb to that fact.
However many societies and toyed with democratic ideas, and decentralized power structures before then.
Yuval Noah Harari's devotes a lot of the book to exploring this
They don't really want to rewrite it so much as write their own.

Constitutions are difficult to change and are open to misinterpretation, e.g. 2nd Ammendment.
Constitutions reflect the presumptions of their authors e.g. slavery, subjugation of women, George Washington opposed political parties.
The more you know.....
Congrats ;)

So it has been interesting watching various calls to the US constitution regarding recent events. Especially odd ‘interpretations’ of wording
This session, Congress will attempt to pass the SAVE act; the name matching requirements are intended to disenfranchise millions of married women.
Given mistaken and fraudulent incarceration, particularly of young black men…

Always worth reading the 1930s USSR constitution, a most progressive document, but without any constitutionalism Stalin's next round of purges took place without a peep.
Not if AIPAC has anything to say about it gang… 💔
to make a few changes to the constitution, alas not in this century..

Sadly, Americans through their opportunity to lead the free world in the trash.
Until or unless we fumble the ball in this dour game we are playing at present.
One thing is for certain. A mob is not a democracy; neither is democracy a mob. Just two ways of saying the same thing 🗽💙 🦋

We didn't even have freedom of speech until like 50 years ago
There is a mandate for this - lest we suffer the same fate of prior American Civilizations:

What about consequences? No one was held accountable
Well we will witness all these coming years
It isn’t and has repeatedly changed because it isn’t. It’s ok that it isn’t if you allow it to change.
It takes non-partial, and unbiased, and non-political people.
Which our current Republican party have NONE of, and the 'Supreme Court' has 4 that have proven to allow abuse of power, and have none.
We can't wait, wait, to tell US, that we DO.
Of course, the idea of democracy, is much older: 25 centuries ago in Greece
Under Cleisthenes, what is generally held as the first example of a type of democracy in 508–507 BC was established in Athens. Cleisthenes is referred to as "the father of Athenian democracy". It's been around for at least 2500 years. So... not a 'very new thing in the world' at all.
If you like the Constitution, pay attention to these people.
Even if we're not counting Magna Carta for some reason, the US constitution still isn't the oldest by almost 200 years
That does nothing to keep unethical, radical or foreign-financed governments from getting elected. Individual voters have that duty. The last Conservative govt had all of those vices.. now one of its politicians is running to be PM.
In the intervening generations there's been very little work done to remedy that original defect. The lassitude of our ancestors left us with a system too rotted from the inside to even protect itself.

NO
The USA has the oldest charter but Iceland has a parliamentary body going back 1000 years.

That's where societies are going wrong... they're getting lazy. Much more fun to play video games, watch fiction TV shows or hang with those who drink or do drugs. Most voters have NO idea what the politician they're about to vote for - plans for them.
(I'm actually ready for gay space anarchism, but I'll take any progress at this point)
