things I miss about old MMOs I used to play
- items/gear physically being in the game world when dropped
- allocating points into stats/skills
- starting as a 'novice' class and then picking your class later from a trainer
- setting up your own shop in town and selling your loot

I miss fumbling around with my old friends in them all.
Were we having fun with it along the way? Definitely.
that said, i've been playing ashes of creation and it will have player run shops and the ability to pick up a second class to become your final class
Ragnarok Online.
I miss it so much. Sometimes my husband and I will play a mid-rate p!server to get the itch scratched. But not a single new MMO (not that there are many) gives the good feeling anymore. We are gonna give the newer DOFUS a shot though.
I was gonna say I don't remember anything like that, but...oh gods, the ol' days of trying to buy rare loot from a trade chat channel that was going too fast, hoping the person wasn't scamming and had a reasonable price...Good times.
I only get that from path of exile now. It's a little sad.
In fact, you now get 2 trees, one for your class and one for your spec
I finished WotLK after playing WC3 so many years ago. I was satisfied, but I stuck around to see what else was to offer and was let down for multiple expansions.
FFXIV provided what WoW couldn't in ways I didn't expect I'd feel.
both have their pros and cons these days, but XIV is the one im more likely to log into each day
The rock-paper-scissors+knockback combat style and non-classed skill progression system got me hooked and ruined my chances of falling into any other MMO.
I know it's not the same entirely as back then but it's pretty close and gives that old school feel!
But yeah, totally agree.
Looking at those now, I know it wasn't the most efficient design, but they had their own charm to it. I still look back to when I played so many f2p Korean anime MMOs when their communities thrived.
Oh wizard? That sounds cool. Oh it needs a lot of cooldown managememt? I cant just sling fireball? Aw man. Rogue wouldve been more fun but now i gotta reset my whole save
It's admittedly not a proper MMO, but it does fit the old-school RPG format very well
...And ya, me too.
it was great.
- intricate group skill builds
- on the fly pve boss counter build change
- actual good pvp design
...yeah I miss those days too
Sadly the old MMOs tend to have insane grind which doesn't work well for me nowadays. Still love to poke into old MMOs every now and then though for the vibes.
Haha... Yeah it's nostalgic alright
Because I miss that shit too.
I'm curious to see what's going on nowadays but 14 currently has that braincell if mine-
- Purchasing/questing for new skills.
- Unique gear with skills
- Potions being useful
a nice amount of that
in Atlyss
I only played a little of Maplestory but it was really cute too
Games have gotten too streamlined, but it's to appeal to as many consumers as possible.
the system has to be made really well to avoid that
I want the power of shenanigans and to see people just getting dumpstered by meme builds.
Dark Age of Camelot my beloved
Oh how I miss the days at Prontera in pirate servers. I played a lot in XatiyaRO(Spain) then moved to Atlantis(LATAM). Surprisingly Atlantis is still around in 2024.
I would love that game again, but modern and less clunky lol.
Also with HOW fast information gets out now that sense of wonder that can never be recaptured with how to do a fight or explore etc
Before it borked itself.
it just feels very organically satisfying like a night market π
Played it for years, was once the official player newbie helper. Also the one and only Player roleplaying Tavern stewardess of the player run Town - Paws
Players were flooding that little tavern every single night and hang out for hours after work.
It was a rather simple life back then, I play as my character but not for any kind of killing or treasure hunting.
Good times, good times
