Yeah I believe in my 3-4 year old life this was on Saturdays . I lived with my grandparents ( parents divorced dad got custody but worked out of state a lot). This was on just before Gleason. I loved watching Jackie and pretended to be a singing bartender like him.
Saturday night at my grandparents house growing up was a scoop of ice cream, a wafer cookie, and Lawrence Welk on the den tv while I sat on the floor between their recliners
OMG, Cow, mom and I saw him live in Tahoe in the mid 70s. I took her for her 55th birthday. The Carpenters were the opening act. Anyway, he and his crew were fantastic. So entertaining. 💖🐮
Most definitely. And, once grandpa passed, my grandmother was the ONLY one allowed to touch the TV because she knew just how to do it, and we'd mess it all up.
HEY!
You were my first Big Deal follower on twitter (our accts still co-follow, but over there I still — for now anyway — retain the parody acct name DonTrumpTwin).
Good to see you here. I just followed you and hope for a FB if possible.

"A von, anna too...! Wunnerful wunnerful...😄" I learned how much I hated sanitized pop from this guy; also how much the only acceptable polka music comes from @weirdalyank.bsky.social!
We always watched because Welk was Norwegian, and so was my grandfather. He loved Joanna, the piano player. Who I really miss from those days are the Smothers Brothers.
OMG, yes, but it was Sunday dinner at my parents’ house, with my mom’s parents having been driven to our house by my dad. Every Sunday, until my dad left.
Grandma & Grandpa loved Lawrence Welk.
My favorite was when Welk tried to be “with it.” Gloriously dorky 💙✌🏻😳
My nana (dad's side) was in love with Joe Feeney, Welk's Irish tenor. Being at their house on a Saturday evening was only made bearable by the popularity of the Lennon Sisters among preteen girls. We didn't have much before the Beatles.
I had a crush on the Lennon Sisters. Wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them exactly (I was a bit young) but I just knew it would be great.
And I recall when Welk fired singer Alice Lon for showing her knees when she sat on a stool by the piano. Shameless hussy!
Same! Probably second grade. I had a box filled with paper dolls. My grandmother used to subscribe to McCalls magazine (& she was poor) just so I could have the Betsy McCall paper doll each issue. Yup, I was her favorite 😂💖
My best friend lived next door and we used to get together in one of our partially finished cellars, spread out our paper doll families, and play games with them all afternoon. Imaginative play. 💖
my Gramma had a piece of plastic that fit over the screen she got at like Woolworths that was supposed to turn a black and white tv into color. the plastic had blue at the top, yellow in the middle and green at the bottom to emulate sky, flesh tones and grass. It was.......somethin'
We took my grandmother to see Lawrence Welk in concert. They sent me up to get autographs. My grandmother was so mad because I didn't get the "right ones." A 12 year old isn't going to wait in the long lines, she's going to the short ones.
And Sullivan (soo-LEAVE-on!) too. Thoughts of Mister Dennehy and a time when playing a hopelessly drunk Irishman on a variety show was considered entertainment.
..wait, wait..I "am" the "Grandparents house" now..and we eat cheap cheese balls, drink lott'sa beer, smoke a'lil sumpin' sumpin',.. and listen to Dwight, Willie, and Ray Wiley Hubbard around here..w/ the occasional Molly Hatchet tune, for fun. Larry Welch is never invited.
