Just about time for us to get weepy over the scene in "A Garfield Christmas" where Garf finds the lost love letters from Grandma's late husband. Deep stuff for a cartoon about a cat who eats lasagna.

Yep, watch Garfield's Christmas Special every year and it always hits me in the feels, right after "Binky, The Clown That Saved Christmas" story has me cringing and shuttering when Dad Arbuckle screams "HEY KIDS!!!"
This is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies and I'll always be under the belief that it should have been an hour long special instead of 30 minutes (24 mins with commercials to be exact)
Even as a kid, this made me feel feelings, and I just learned recently that Grandma is Pat Carroll? I mean, Ursula? Prunella in the Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren? Ugh, my childhood!
This one is nearly too much for me. I always want to watch it but I’m basically crying as soon as they get to the farm; preemptively trying to brace for impact
@worldofmanimal.bsky.social shared this with me a few weeks back. The differences between the 1987 and 1991 airings of the show. Some significant changes to the animation. Interesting watch. https://youtu.be/2V2sxG1wfU0?si=aZnOzGmNdcCIkbQF
I have the original version but it includes the piano scene. An extended version. I've never seen the different animation from the 1991 version grandma rocking and stroking her cat.
I've seen it so many times I would immediately recognize any difference, like watching theatrical release of LOTR after years of watching extended versions
Whaaaat!? I had no clue. Now I'm wondering what version I have because I definitely remember the piano scene but not the new animation. Will report back.
I only have the 1987 recording. Converted to digital from vhs a while back with the other shows. Motown merry christmas. A claymation christmas. Memories💚
I've watched this special annually since I was a little kid, and generally this scene only made me tear up a little bit. But watching this after Pat Carroll passed in 2022... man, I was nearly inconsolable.
My dad legit cried during this scene when I was a kid, and he was a hardass.
He grew up on a farm and was raised by his granddad, who was an even bigger hardass... except at Christmas. And his grandmother played piano and loved cats.
He really identified with the Arbuckles, minus the snow.
Recently made my boyfriend watch this, because every time I told him I wanted to build a version of Odie’s homemade present from the Christmas special for the cat he didn’t know what I was talking about. Many more feels were had than anticipated.
the garfield specials for some reason usually had “hold my beer” levels of deeply impactful, emotionally resonant writing. meanwhile comic garf is a slothful jackass goofball
I stopped watching that video because the guy doesn't get straight to the point.
But i would guess the whole thing is people started making weird memes of Garfield out of boredom, the internet caught on and now Garfield became a cryptic meme
The Garfield specials are all sorts of fun - the Halloween one comes immediately to mind - but... as it was with Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, who could've imagined that kind of power coming from that work?
I remember this. The grandma was a hoot! The way she threw her head back in laughter stays in my memory from my days of youth. & the way they oohed & aahed at the lighting of the tree. Fond memories. Happy Holidays to All! Be Well!🙏🏾
Fun fact. The version I grew up with had a different cut of this scene. The dialogue was the same but some visuals were different- the photograph, for example, was not present.
The Garfield YouTube channel frequently has a livestream of the Halloween, Thanksgiving, & Christmas specials, back-to-back-to-back. Highly recommended. Regardless of the season. Good, warm vibes all around.
The scene where she's remembering her late husband has always gotten me. Ever since I was a kid, and now even more after the loss of my own grandmother.
It sounds a bit like Garth, which really makes me want to see a version of Garfield with a mop of blond hair, thick black glasses, and a Aerosmith t-shirt covered by a flannel.

Bluesky has enough characters to have cut corners in other places, my friend.

"Wait! You're not Sylvia!"
......after Grandma saved the THANKSGIVING DAY, Garfield knew he had 2 go all out! Great Christmas Toon!

Cheers, and all the best!
Which is to say, aye, heartily agreed.
And you’ve gotta kick it off in October with the Halloween special, amirite? 🏴☠️ ⚓️

Garfield was full of this stuff though, loved those comics
