This is driving me crazy too. Not long ago 10% universal tariffs were considered the worst-case scenario, something even Trump wasn’t crazy enough to impose. Now have those PLUS 125% tariffs on China. Together, these raise raise inflation by about as much as original “Liberation Day” tariffs did!

why is *every* newspaper/programme running with the headline "tariffs are paused" when they haven't been.
What's happened is that every country (except China) gets a flat rate of 10% for 90 days.

U.S. and China Headed for ‘Monumental’ Split, Putting World Economy on Edge
A deepening trade war could further weaken ties between the superpowers. The effects will reverberate everywhere.

So when MAGA say he’s doing what he said he’d do.
Bullshit!!!!!!
But he needs the 10% tariffs to compel countries to come to him with deals he can’t refuse.
“But we’re playing chess” -china
“Pair of nines, beeotch!” -trump
Imagine if inflation suddenly increased by 200 basis points in a single week. That's a huge economic shock.
But it's so much bigger with China
A request though: please, no more apologies about wild wonk and weeds. Adjust the balance to taste, that makes sense—but we must normalize “knowin’ stuff”.
Once the lads have their trades lined up, of course.
total china gdp is $17.8 trillion,
total exports are $2.9 trillion or 16%,
exports to USA are 2.8% of China's gdp
why would China call as trump says they will,
his hand seems weak?
“Thank you Big Donald for
raising the tariffs to 10%”

China manufactures almost every consumer product and they NOW have 125% tariffs!!! 🤷🏽♂️
1. China can avoid a lot of these using the supply chain (Vietnam etc)
2. If China can not avoid it, they now have proven leverage through the bond market to get concessions from Trump
The 10% is still pretty bad but was priced in
We are still in inflationary tariff hell - just a less reactionary version of tariff hell.
We are being played.
Something about that Overton Window…
Every time.
The Kennedy Trump wanted in his Cabinet was old Joe, not the current Robert.
You start with an outrageous demand of people then when they rightly protest you dial it back down but dont get rid of it, thereby shifting the window
Other than China, nothing else changed.
Worse, Trump killed trust in America.

press coverage, can we please pay attention to how everyone reflexively parrots the administration’s ridiculous framing of Trump’s tantrum as imposing “reciprocal” tariffs?
They aren’t reciprocal. Repeating that framing is journalistic malpractice.
And the media fall for it every time.
We lost mfr jobs- but how many got info jobs
they were conjured up out of orange slime without Congressional approval
In other words Taxation Without Representation
You know how that one ends

Trump has no policies; no consistency or position but self-service. Commenting about his actions from any context other than pathology is a disservice to society.
Musk is installing politicians who will kill net zero: Trump, Reform UK, AfD, Canadian Conservatives.
The current financial crisis is nothing relative to what is coming.

The only political threats to the economy are from the left.
Right-wingers' policies, by definition, give us the Best Possible Economy. Any problems? Inevitable...or woke's fault.

Firms still have no idea what tariffs will be in 90 days, so are pausing investment decisions.
We are significantly worse off today than we were pre-"Liberation Day" and press coverage should reflect that

Saying / mandating by EO while stripping capacity to enforce is a strange choice if he is serious about them, but maybe that’s what his staff banked on - let him name what he wants while they strip the furnishings of democracy?
Good times, good times.
And then there is the confusion over actual enforcement and collection of tariffs vs. merely proposing them. Headlines suggest this or that tariff is "back" and it looks ominous but it's just a proposal, Trump's latest whim.
These jerks won't even negotiate with the penguins b/c they are not fascist enough.
Penguins, rise up!
Gotta calculate and collect tariffs. Inspection for smugglers.
Immigrants too.
This will look like a Covid supply chain.
💯
Same w/ calling tariffs "reciprocal," propaganda term unrelated to actual policy
Still, market participants should be sophisticated enough to know this
found this to help make sense of the events. bout the best i have seen and hasn't gotten attention.

1. US is 2d in world in manufacturing output - as much output as next 5 countries.
2. China’s output is 2x US but employs 8-10 x as many people in sector. U.S. mfg. is higher tech and higher value than China mfg.
