Ugh, right?! Fuck reconstruction; the south should have been driven to its knees and never allowed to 'rise again'.
But between worst health outcomes, lowest education rates, and climate change impacts (especially the Gulf of MEXICO states), the south is poised to take itself out. Bye.
That's so sad considering more than 1/2 of Black Americans live in the South. I was working on a documentary in americus, Georgia and I asked local cops & black elders why racism is still a problem. They all said the same thing. " That's the way it's always been, it's never going to change."
Screw fashion.
It's always attractive to tell the truth.
Reality is, they are using our black and brown citizens and visitors as test subjects and testing our tolerance.
Raving lunatics.
This will only work if we convert civic engagement into our every day. Only work from the ground up.
So many people would rather choose anything else even if it’s contradicting our current reality than admit voters and many people in office are motivated by racism.
Explains a lot, even if my fellow whites try to pretend otherwise. I grew up with it, small town on the edge of the south, with hard wired racism. White guys get to hear it unvarnished; we know the truth. We all have to decide how we respond. I moved north, but I've never forgotten how it worked.
This is a fact about the history of the United States. One of the reasons that we are in the state that we are in is that most people give in to unreasonable people because they don't want to deal with pushing back. White supremacy has benefitted from this for decades, if not centuries.
I’ve always said that everything in politics that doesn’t make sense is probably just racism. Or old people. Or racist old people. But definitely one of those.
Watching educated people—who spent the entire 2010s on the bird app, constantly in the mentions of Black ppl (primarily in BW’s mentions), absorbing our words, confronted with 50-11 reading lists in 2020—still act like they don’t know this is racism, makes sections of this app actually very awful.🥲
I’ve always tried to learn & understand this in my adult life, but it wasn’t until my own life pushed me to more specific types of advocacy that I realized you literally can’t do that work without first shifting the focus to antiracism over all else. Otherwise you’re building on a racist foundation.
I rock with afrofuturism bc I feel like a LOT of people will analyze evidence of racism with even more scrutiny and skepticism than they would looking at purported UFO footage. Racism is totally real except for every single manifestation of it that I point out. I feel like an alien out here.
This is how they're getting away with this. What most racists don't understand is that white supremacy does not include most of them either. You have to rich white and male.
Isn't it insane? It's like the white supremacist version of "nothing tastes as good as thin feels." To them, nothing tastes as good as [racist destruction of basic American democratic ideals and institutions] feels.
Yeah! Money is power and power is money! And a lot of rich people are willing to spend money on hurting POC and poor people (and both) and consider it an investment to do so
Yes, but do they know that or are they so drunk on their own Kool-Aid that they think the chaos will be something they can leverage for increasing wealth concentration?
oh, completely. most billionaires don't seem to understand that their wealth creates delusion, and I don't think any of them have a way to see around it.
Everyone around them is an employee. Zuckerberg literally thinks he is the re-incarnation of a Roman Emperor and is clearly in some sort of martial-arts themed warlord training.
Katana nerds who have never actually experienced violence but feel their video game skills will see them through.
I do not think it even has to be straight, hard racism. The social and economic constructions with deeply racial or discriminatory roots can produce these scenarios.
But it's also *useless* to reiterate it. Damn near everybody on the left knows this. Damn near everybody else just gets defensive and digs in when you even hint at it.
It's an argument-terminating discussion in these polarized times.
Fashion smashion- you gotta tell the truth. A lot of folks want to believe that “ordinary Americans,” are just unaware. No, they are racist. If they weren’t racist, they would be aware and this wouldn’t be inexplicable!
"They get you 'under the tent' by trading on a common skin color, as though you're already painted with mutual sins. It's byllshxt, tell them to fxxx off."
400 years and there are still 12 prisons operating on former plantations. Angola literally never stopped. Far too many people don't even understand the structure was never destroyed because of WILLFUL ignorance.
Agreed, and I get that exact response every time I talk about race.
My gen wasn't educated into the whole truth and we have little shared experience; but the younger gen has both and that bodes well for the future. maga is doing their worst, but at best, they can only hold red states.
The magats have been nothing but racist from the get-go. Now they feel justified saying the quiet parts out loud. As a white woman I’m ashamed and angered. I’m also doing all I can to point it out, I’m sure my insta followers are tired of me but I don’t gaf. Democracy and equality die in silence.
My kid asked what an HOA was last week and ended up getting a whole rant about them that also included their roots in racism and therefore gentrification.
Not the short answer he wanted, I'm sure. But people need to know.
Yup. What seems inexplicable today is rooted in a long history of racism built into the fabric of this country. Slavery to voter suppression, these systems never really left - just changed hats. We can’t fix what we won’t face.
I've been repeatedly making jokes that amount to "they're willing to blow trillions on the right to say the N word" because frankly, it's true. That's what this is about
I think you're describing the 76.8m people who voted for him the other .2m people wanted their tax cuts.
The silent type whites will call it anything but what it really is; they'll walk away from a lifelong relationship before admitting race played a role in why they voted for Trump.

Eventhough they might just be the extra sauce, sprinkled over racism.

And by "the past few decades" I mean "my whole life." And I'm GenX.
I then connect the dots for them. Ain't been stumped yet. It's in the underpinnings.✌🏻
The ways antiracism is being shut down in every quarter is insidious.
I beg you to repost to help me
Has anyone ever tried to govern based on being inclusive?
This is a grift, like it always is.
If this all tips into direct conflict, they are just more meat and bone for the industrialized killing machines that are modern militaries.
But I do not think they have the insight or depth to understand the systemic blowbacks coming their way.

b/c some people thing we live in a post-racial society?
if only.
MAGA shows us that it was forced underground.
america is deeply racist, since 1619.
slavery, KKK, Jim Crow, lynchings - never faced up to them honestly.
racism is built into housing, banking, employment, etc.
"That's how they get you."

Financial analysts are tying themselves into knots trying to explain these tariffs but in reality, the reason is just that simple

That's right, racism doesn't.
and why *our* species might find it lacking....
