Not great during his time in Peru (opposed “gender ideology in school”). Some indication he moved left in alignment with Francis in his elevation to Cardinal.
I’m not all that concerned about comments from 13 years ago. I’ll withhold my judgement on this until I see newer information. I mean, these comments are older than gay marriage in the US…
Yeah I know so many people personally who might have used the same language in 2012. Not happy that they did, but also I can recognize that they have changed their views in 13 years. Hoping the same is true with Big Pappy Leo.
NYT says in 2012: Prevost was critical of entertainment media that held “sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel,” including the “homosexual lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.”
“One thing I want to say is that I think the media tended to overlook in the last few years of his life, he used to meet regularly with transgender people. It was kind of under the radar. But that's a big deal…
“…At his entombment, at St. Mary Major, there was a representative from the transgender community officially there at the invitation of the Vatican. So that's a change and that would not have happened before Francis.”
2005 was when they did the Gay Son in Desperate Housewives (near the end of the season 1)
Of course I can trace stuff way before that but my point is a whole lot changed in 20 years. I am happy and I have scars / traumas I hope no one else experiences.
yeah like I think it may be a good sign that everyone is only quoting that same one shitty line because that means he didn’t say anything like that during the entirety of Francis’ tenure and we gotta let people grow and learn
He actually wasn't. He said he was for it in a 1996 interview with Outlines, a now-defunct LGBTQ publication here in Chicago, and lied to everyone for years about this.
I give him no credit though because in 2008 he literally campaigned against it saying that he "believes marriage is between a man and a woman". I don't care what he personally believed since he literally repeating homophobic talking points while running for president.
I understand that was the church's position but show me where in the Gospel they feel they can make that connection. Because everyone points to Paul seemingly shaming hays (and I am not a fan of Paul anyway) but in the next passage after he says people you want to shame s/b treated w/ compassion.
But this was with a conclave that's 15% larger than of the previous ones, so majorities are much harder to achieve. A large number is there for the first time. And there's now tighter rules on talking with each other, so it's harder to come to agreements. I think the speed is significant here.
Yeah, given that Francis hand picked him to lead the process of who would become new bishops and that Francis seems to have been very interested in elevating more progressive voices, I'd have to assume that Francis was pretty comfortable with this guys' stance on the issues that mattered to him.
okay the fact that he reads America Magazine and National Catholic Reporter is big, guys, those are arguably the two most progressive US Catholic publications
It was about Syrian refugees, not LGBT issues, but it was still significant to me that he was choosing to elevate Martin's voice, considering how relatively liberal Martin is compared to most of the Catholic clergy.
Most of my experience is with Jesuits, not Augustinians, but it varies dramatically by order.
My Jesuit high school, is doubling down on its commitment to DEI and social justice, and teens from Jesuit schools converge on DC to lobby for the poor and the environment each year.
Overall the vibe I am getting is that the College of Cardinals views America's current immigration policies as a full crisis and moved to get someone in place who would be effective in mitigating and repudiating that specific issue
for better or worse - and with the caveat that this guy is quite well known inside that room but not to the rest of us, who are still figuring him out - I think we may have just gotten the pope that Francis wanted us to get
I’m not a specialist, but from what I remember from CCD is that the Augustinians care for their “flock.” They prioritize taking care of their community’s emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being
lmao my progressive Catholic friend just texted to say Leo XIII wrote "one of the best encyclicals ever" and his name choice is encouraging as a result (it's pro worker and anti-capitalist, roughly)
Honestly a lot more people in power need to realize succession planning is a thing in healthy organizations, not this "I will live forever and if not I'm taking it with me!" attitude that's currently fucking over US politics.
Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow.
Now I'm just falling to pieces.
This feels like a miracle.
I'm not catholic but a mere human being. It has felt shattering to me having an administration wanting to see us fight against one another rather than bringing our beautiful different selves together. Now, hope.
However, lots of change since 2012 for a lot of people and organizations. Not saying he has definitely "evolved", but it's not out of the realm of possibility

Not good but maybe he's changed?

so here’s the thing
2012 was during the Benedict era
I think you cannot underestimate how much Francis thinking differently legitimately got lots of other Catholics to think differently
I am side-eyeing this but I am waiting to see whether he has evolved at all

@jamesmartinsj.bsky.social
There’s a database at the bottom for all the potential popes where they evaluated their positions - if known- on a bunch of issues.
please quote my post please 🙏

Which… if that isn’t a blinking indicator
if this Pope Leo drags us even all the way into the 19th century I’ll be thrilled
WAIT
EVERYBODY STOP THIS IS IMPORTANT
THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY IMPORTANT
