Parable of the sowers too. I think it came out in β93. California wildfires, walled cities, incoming president named donner, donner supporters called maggotsβ¦π³
But evidently it didnβt matter. We chose willful ignorance and passivity. Their plans are meticulously laid out and being followed to the letter rn. No one believed it could really happen I guess.
Yes likewise. I actually have the audiobook though will also buy a physical copy too (partly to support the author and also because it's just fun to have both).
Anne Applebaum narrates the audiobook herself which makes it feel even more compelling, plus it's a great listen in and of its own right.
Great Page! Thank you! I return the favor. My 3rd 5* book. FREE. Valuable tips on enjoying sanity during the immense shit-storm in progress on Earth. Why free? Because you/we are more important than the money. Please keep up the good work! Love from Kathmandu, Tenzin https://www.fearlesspuppy.info/newbook
Just a thoughtβ¦. Host a Silent Book Club and for the first 30min people have the option of buying a new book at a small discount before the silent 60 min reading beginsβ¦π€π€·ββοΈ
I recommend Thomase Jefferson and Thomas Paine. Read as much of both of them as you can get your hands on. If it doesn't radically change your view of America, read it over again and repeat until you understand just how far we've strayed from the original intention.
The MAGAts donβt read. Especially the Constitution. They just watch TV which is why they think the Felon-in-Chief is good anything (heβs not, heβs an ass and a total failure), but Apprentice, sadly, made him look like he wasnβt in fact a total failure at everything (except lying and grifting).
People often ask me how I can quote Generals, Politicians, Doctors, Poetry, Shakespeare, Austen, etc; itβs because of BOOKS π TRY IT OUT, FALL IN LOVE WITH A BOOK π OR MANY! I LOVE THAT BOOKSTORE SMELL, AND I LOVE BARNES & NOBLE! π¦ππ
"85.9 million eligible voters skipped the 2024 general election, far surpassing the 76.8 million ballots cast for Donald Trump or the 74.3 million for Kamala Harris."
I find it hard to believe that 237 million people in the US cannot read...
Third party gets terrible representation. They do fuck all until once every four years they try to present themselves as a viable alternative. I personally believe that we should axe the executive branch altogether. We donβt need a part time king.
Must be difficult to do more than fuck all if no one votes for you.
Everyone votes Red, or Blue (or not at all apparently), and nothing ever changes for the better.
The current situation needs to be a very short term disaster, and a wake up call.
Seems odd that they make up approximately 99% of all enrolled voters though.
Although that would suggest that the majority under 18 years of age, can read, and may also be able to think.
Doesn't look like they will ever be allowed to vote now though.
JKR aside, the last book (probably 2) are a very good allegory for what's currently happening. The Ministry has fallen and the Death Eaters are being emboldened. Time to join Dumbledore's Army and fight back.
I'll read plenty, but if you want me to buy from you, start paying your employees better and give them better benefits. Surviving with the way the world is right now is hard enough, so do better by your people.
I've also been working my way through House of Leaves with a buddy for awhile. Very well written and fantastic read, but a bit of a difficult read. Absolutely recommend it, but only if you have a friend to embark on a book that makes you think a little too much.
Huge supporter of libraries and collect memberships everywhere I can. I buy from indi and used as well. I will also go into BnN as long as not censoring books since need all the book access right now.
I agree letβs support those libraries! And in my rural community, I am happy to support our Barnes & Noble that consistently has Black History Month and Banned book displays! Also compared to Amazon it feels like supporting small businessβΊοΈ
Barnes and Noble is the only good big physical media store we have. Although they are a big company, they still display banned, black, LGBTQ books and also sell movies and music. I'll keep supporting my local store as much as any other local library and business.
Also "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." Today I learned that in the 1930s after Hitler seized power, the Reichstag (kind of like Congress) didn't have a purpose anymore. There were no laws, only "decrees" that Hitler made - those were the laws. Kind of like, I don't know, executive orders?
Change that to Fuck you Trump. The rest of America does not want to hurt our neighbors. And his supporters aren't American. You can't be a nazi and American. We settled this. There was a war, the whole world was involved.
Yes, and? He bought and paid for your country. $250m seems pretty cheap too. He's also a Canadian Citizen as well as American, but we didn't allow him into the halls of power here and there's a movement to revoke his citizenship.
Welp, 2/3rds of your fellow Americans either disagree with you or didn't care enough to show up to support your belief at the polls. The guy the US elected is threatening to annex Canada.
I would appreciate very much some signs of overthrowing your tyrannical Dictators...
Id love to get rid of Trump, id love to do it using a disgusting amount of violence. Apparently I'm the only one on the left willing to physically take the fight to these magat fucks.
I'm an army veteran give me a rifle and a target and I'm good. All this social media. Too old for this.
B&N actually works as a distributor for many independent bookstores. Theyβre not like Walmart, trying to squash everyone out. Their new leadership sees value in ANY bookstore.
You can also try https://bookshop.org (order online and pick a local store; all the profits go to that storeβ¦not sure if in Canada)
I kind of want to walk into that local small bookshop and browse their wares.
Thanks for the recommendations, but I don't want to order one, I want to browse for and be surprised by what I might find. Love the shopping as much as the reading.
Go pay your employees an adequate wage. Bring back annual pay increases even if it means your shareholders get a fraction less on their bonuses. I know people who have worked for your company for YEARS and yβall are a legitimately bad company to work for.
If youβre a librarian, archivist, or museum professional, this is a must-read right now. Also The Monuments Men (the movie is ok, but the book is better)
Comments
No clue why they would be banned.

The saddest part is, reading and the pursuit of knowledge doesn't stop Fascism and Oligarchy...
Good ol' fashioned Rioting in the streets gets more done than reading ever did
sounds informative either way
Atlantic, Harpers, Ny review of Books, NYer. Science News
I should probably work on that.
Maybe you should put some arrows on the floor on how to get to it. Nothing too complicated, like turns or corners.
Anne Applebaum narrates the audiobook herself which makes it feel even more compelling, plus it's a great listen in and of its own right.
What is it they are trying to hide from you, it's probably great stuff.

1. I'm Canadian and we've got this whole "F#$% you 'Murica! We don't want to be annexed!"
2. I'm trying to buy a bit more local, from smaller shops where it's about survival, not increased profit.
....but mostly that first one.
Trump is proof you can. Also, Musk is proof you CAN be born outside the US and be president.
