i think every video game should be required to state in the description whether there's jumpscares in it or not. put it in with the rating or something, idc. i'm tired of doing google searches or whatever

Funnily enough I remember fundamentalist Christians being really on top of this kind of thing in earlier internet days. There was some massive content warning database for movies that didn't just say "sexual content", it would be like who touched what, how many times, what can you see, etc.
Was just about to say I love common sense media to pick out movies my mom can handle. Or at least I used to love them until I checked a movie recently and now everything is behind a paywall. Because of course
The website "Does the Dog Die", which crowdsources potential triggering content in various entertainment media, does cover jump scares. Amusingly, Five Nights at Freddy's - a game built around jump scares - has 2 votes for "No" (verses 142 "Yes").
Even just a disclaimer screen same as a epilepsy warning.
It's an accessibility thing at this point. Can't go giving unsuspecting gamers heart attacks.
but sure please tell me more about how nothing ever changes.
i surely didn't learn enough to know what i am saying, when i studied the history and evolution of the horror genre in film school lmao
My bf feels this way and it’s a disservice to the game/movie you’re consuming. The studio put it there for a reason. It’s like complaining about sex scenes in movies and wanting to know when to skip
My bf makes that argument, but I think about the scene in mulholland drive behind the diner which is a favorite of mine. Without that ‘jump scare’ that scene wouldn’t have worked. They have a purpose sometimes
Along with this I think all games should state upfront if they have rape scenes or not. Was really disappointed to find out that the game Kult: Divinity lost thinks those are fun gameplay
It's not exhaustive but this website is very helpful to me as someone who also does not want to consume media with rape scenes https://www.unconsentingmedia.org/
PEGI over here in Europe has little descriptors on the back of games and there's one that says "fear" when there might be frightening content. I believe every age rating system should have one but they don't for some reason.
I saw a clip on YouTube from one of these indie games (dunno what one, sorry) where the girl playing saw a toggle option for “jumpscare” in the settings, and when she toggled it on it immediately gave her a jump scare in the menu. That was its only purpose. 😂
This is important, I shouldn’t have to look up on Google, “Does Gone Home have jumpscares?” just because I am a crybaby and the empty house is just a little bit spooky.
You haven't truly lived unless you've been sitting by the PC, all lights out, headphones on, creeping along a corridor and have some monster with a bag of grenades jump out at you.

But yeah, would also be nice at the beginning of the game itself
Isn't that part of the experience?
Batman Arkham games had jumpscares and I wasn't expecting them, which made them work more tbh
jumpscares are cheap and overused

100 times worse than listening to ASDIC in a sub.
