Years ago in an IEP meeting I had a district rep who kept misgendering a kid. He rolled his eyes on the second correction. "Say 'he' again" was the third correction and it was like someone had put a gun on the table. These kinds of people depend on it only being them who violate the social contract.

There's that thing they say about the basis of conservatism, that it depends on an ingroup that's protected but not bound by the law vs an outgroup that's bound but not protected by the law. Similar dynamic at play here I think regarding the social contract--both cases rely on selective enforcement

The thing about the social contract is that, in a lot of cases, there really isn't any enforcement especially under conservatism. A white member of congress inviting a guy like Keith Self outside isn't going to face any real consequences besides disapproving looks from assholes.

That's the challenge, yeah. I think we're starting to try to work towards a world where a person does face some consequences. Sometimes all it takes is one person to make a bigot feel small (which is a very severe consequence for some of these pricks)

I think the way we do that is by putting our own violations of the social contract on the table. There is no reason these guys should expect to be treated with dignity or respect. When I was in the USAF, I sent an E-3 to get something from the tool crib. He was from PR and had an accent. He'd been gone a while, so I went to see what was up. Another NCO was holding him up because he was having trouble saying "rivet gun". I ripped into NCO's ass and he almost started to cry.

Absolutely. As a trans person, i wish more people would recognize just how easy it is to go "Hey! Have some decency!" even within the more obscure lgbtq+ struggles, that stuff goes a LONG way. Someone uses they/them pronouns? Just use them out of politeness and respect even if you don't fully get it
