What is the new headline? Let me guess: it’s now “Will America regret the campaign against transgender Americans?” As if there’s a question as to whether stripping a demographic of human rights might be either good or bad and no one really can say either way?
Apparently, they have different headlines on the homepage and on the actual article. The article headline on the page is "Trump’s Shameful Campaign Against Transgender Americans" - nothing about America's shame.
The problem right now is there are a small number of bullies cheating and puffing up and threatening violence and everyone else standing back waiting to see who is going to be the one to actually stand up to the bully. So far there have not been any anti-bullies...
America doesn’t do regret. Is the Times kidding with this? If we survive this crisis moment, literally no substantial number of Americans who voted for Trump in 2024 will regret their vote because we live in a shameless society.
The NYT’s brand of bigotry is just as odious as MAGA’s. Implying that there’s legitimate debate to be had about the right of Trans people to be themselves is the liberal equivalent of Trump’s “very fine people on both sides”
Bari Weiss has made a media empire, although small, off of her Anti-Trans hysteria that was published, almost weekly, in the NYT. Fuck all the way off with this crocodile tears bullshit.
It's very fucking simple. It's either all of our rights, or none of our rights. And if it's none of our rights, enjoy the machine built to strip rights being turned on you and yours.
There is no "middle ground" on human fucking rights.
Oh, bummer. I've just gone by headlines and reader reactions since shitshow 1.0 when I switched to WaPo. Now I only subscribe to Independent journalism (which I think is the phoenix rising from the ashes of legacy print media) and @theguardian.com, and have suffered zero FOMO.
Yep, all good. @slate.bsky.social @motherjones.com @newrepublic.com @theguardian.com @thebulwark.bsky.social also feature good writers and stories, with no paywall.
It's not like they're actually retracting anything or apologizing one bit. Or standing by the facts. Or not furthering more harmful bullshit. It's a soft, 'concerned' title on a self-serving stance.
Just more click-farming by shifting the emotions around a bit.
@raskin.house.gov Please start a class action suit against Trump as you described on The Weekend! Millions of us are waiting for a leader and event that will bring us together in force. This would generate huge energy and could be a beginning of the end - our SOLIDARITY! Please be our Lech Walesa!
The Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Post all contributed to our current situation by sane warning Trump and normalizing his behavior. I will not read any of them until they take the time to be self reflective about their contributions.
1) increase prejudice
2) feed the hate
3) stop tracking crimes against them
4) round them up
5) [redacted]
7) profit
did you know that Japanese-Americans were forced into internment camps during WWII?
did you know Nazis and local police gang-raped Jews in mass before gunning them down the next day?
does anybody really think the people Trump rounded up last time weren't sold off into sex/labor slavery, forced organ donations, or sent to play a Most Dangerous Game?
do you know what happened to "vagrants" in South Korea? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNN1D_E6vjI
The women's sports issue is "separate but equal" for women.
If women had never been discouraged/barred from sports/education in the first place, Title IX wouldn't have been necessary.
Clamoring for segregation all for the college scholarship $$.
The NYT has been anti-LGBTQIA+ for years. It's a clear bias. They are also anti-Palestine and pro-genocide. Cancel subscriptions immediately. This podcast has excellent episodes on anti-trans bias at NYT https://translash.org/podcasts/the-anti-trans-hate-machine/
Not at all. Now they can have all those great headlines about the atrocities and absurdities of this regime. Just think of all those riveting headlines.🤦🏻♀️
look, this half-assed attempt at allyship sucks, but I'd rather have the genteel transphobes horrified by how far the Trump admin is going than silent about it. I'm going to ignore them and keep doing what I do.
Kids in cages, Palestinian Genocide, attacks on trans people, the long list of things that, to hear the New York Times tell it, are only bad when a Republican is president is pretty sickening...
Spoiler alert: they do not. And in fact are doubling down and saying that it is perfectly reasonable to debate whether trans people should have civil rights or not.
Well the EO’s are attempting to ban trans people from bathrooms, from the military, from sports, and from any institutions segregated by gender. They also attempt to ban transgender minors from having access to healthcare.
The EOs ban people from bathrooms they don't belong in. If your point is that bathrooms shouldn't be segregated by sex, you can make that argument if you want. But provided we do have segregated bathrooms, I don't have the right to enter a women's bathroom, do I? Should I?
Also, to your second point, no doctor or parent has the right to mutilate their child, who cannot even consent to such procedures. You claim people are being attacked, but the only argument you are making is that they should have rights nobody else has.
Not at all. They ban people from bathrooms they DO belong in. Bathrooms should absolutely remain segregated by sex, and banning trans people from bathrooms of their sex is WRONG.
I have no idea whether you’re a woman or not, so I can’t answer your question.
NYT may as well call themselves The Ministry of Truth and Propaganda at this point, the fuckin idiots have been craving those mega clicks from boosting anti-trans hysteria. They did it to gays, they did it to POC, they'll do it until their old ass structure dies.
Minors should not be given hormones or have sex changes especially without parental consent. It’s medical experimentation on minors. It’s one of the reasons the Democrats lost. Keep your hands of other people’s children.
It’s not transphobic to publish an article about the Cass Review, for example. The trouble is that trans advocates don’t want any other news or opinions aired except their own.
The job of a reporter is not to say "some people say it's raining, some say it's sunny.
It's to go outside and see if it's f**king raining.
Cass is a prime example. It was a failure of a "review" that doesn't pass grade school muster, that was immediately denounced by the wider medical community.
I've read it in full, which is why I can say it's not worth the paper it's printed on. By Cass' standards over 83% of pediatric care would be inoperable, it's not a review with depth, it's one looking to affirm it's preexisting conclusions
The only "positive" effects it had were to ideological ends
that paragraph just gives it all away with "those who broadly support trans rights." our perspectives aren't even considered. there is no room for trans people in the argument they want to make about how bothsidesism is good. trans people are another faceless, helpless group that should never
advocate for themselves, only cede control to their allies who assuredly know what they need better than they do. we're not allowed to know our own minds.
What these writers stuck in their ivory towers need to understand is that they don’t need to understand we still deserve our rights so all they’re doing is fucking us over more and more every time they call it a “fiercely debated topic” they just sell us down the river.
I'm so fucking tired. And I feel like I shouldn't be tired because I believe all people deserve basic fucking human dignity. That's literally the bare minimum. Fuck.
Right now I believe that (for fairness) every cisgender bigot and false friend should be forced to suffer the consequences of this hate every bit as much as the average trans person.
The right to freedom to move through the world as we choose, here noted as *not* up for debate, includes the freedom of movement to play sports and use restrooms and receive unbiased healthcare, or else we *do not* have the freedom to move through the world as we choose, YOU UTTER RANCID ASSHOLES.
I just think it's crazy how the "states' rights" people are so desperate for the federal government to get involved in their dumb culture war shit. Sure, there are topics that have not reached full consensus, but there's no reason they can't be handled at the local level.
Just normal accommodations afforded to anyone else of the same gender.
I now understand you meant no harm, but calling being Transgender a disability is inaccurate at best and offensive/harmful at worst. It feeds into the narrative that trans people are mentally ill.
Um, debate about whether we have a disability aside, they kinda do treat us like those who have them: systemically infantilized, denied opportunity to thrive, deprioritized to point of broad invisibility.
Yeah. Which is why I think you should be protected by disability rights. And medication to treat it is just the same as any other recommended treatment. You dont have to know someone’s disability to support their rights to accommodations and rights to medical care even as children.
Medical care, right to reasonable accommodation. It does more than just protecting on the basis of sex. You should use it… stop denying its a disability. It clearly is.
So like disabled girl being denied participation in girl’s sports. It makes people against trans people look really bad in this frame without the stigma of anything specific. We are stronger together than we are apart.
Like if they had acknowledged and apologized for their role this would be a good editorial. But they have no self-awareness or contrition for what they’ve done.
What use are points without a foundation to sit upon. If your “point” stems from a realm you no longer live or ruled by, what use it in normal conversation. It’s a point of cosplay. All the signs of an enemy both foreign and domestic.
For trans people who pay attention, the NYT is basically as bad as Truth Social, conveniently allowing the Times to have as many “if the left and the right both hate us we must be correct”-gasms as they can eke out before the fascists shut them down entirely
Nothing is being debated, fiercely or otherwise, by those who broadly support transgender rights. The New York Times is opposed to transgender rights. The editors are just a little embarrassed by the Republicans' gratuitous and extremely cruel targeting of a segment of the population.
Observe the coverage of Hitler and the Nazi party from 1923 to 1939, and you see a pattern of normalization, and rationalization. The Ochs/Sulzberger family have collaborated with the far right, for over 100 years
Banning us from sports, banning our healthcare, and legally erasing us. All of these ignorant and harmful actions stem from the same core belief that trans people do not deserve to exist as equals in society.
The Ed Board sees the prejudice in one of these dehumanizing actions, but not all. Why?
Oh my God these garbage people. Maybe they swirl down the drain surrounded by garbage as fetid as the hate they write that built the scaffolding to get us here in the first place.
They are backpedaling. I want to have much longer it'll take the mainstream media to start doing the same thing seeing as though they're being abandoned for capitulating to Trump
The Times does not recognize that any of their actions contributed to this. Also, the next 3 editorials will be about how disappearing trans folks from society is a good thing, actually.
The morally callous owners of the NYT are devoid of human empathy or any other quality that would involve them caring about anything other than money, their god.
The “regret” is the precedent that will be used to take rights away from people the NYT deems worthy of rights. This is “first they came for the socialists, trade unionists, and Jews, and I was glad because I didn’t like the socialists, trade unionists, and Jews. Then, they came for ME!”
New York Times is a propaganda tool for oligarchs, it is no longer honest journalism. They only care about sucking off their investors and appeasing their readers. They care not for honesty or honor, in my opinion.
Well now that they can sell papers about it, they are all for truthfully covering the downfall of America. You see if they stopped Trump, then what would they write about.

My daughter's 7th grade team had a fun scrimmage against the 7th grade boys today.
The boys won by only 9 points, because they didn't want to humiliate the girls!

No thanks.
As the political winds have now shifted, NYT happily pretends it was always doing the right thing.
Same suits, different flag pins. They aren’t suddenly “the good guys” just by switching hats from black to white
Just more click-farming by shifting the emotions around a bit.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
NO THEY WON'T.
Down with the rat!
The Times has never really regretted their contributions to Iraq War II (WMD) or Trump 1 (but her emails), just to name two.
And they'll never acknowledge all the parts they played in this, or getting to Felon47
They should stick to puzzles
Those are all gross civil rights violations.
And no child consents to any healthcare at all. Parents/guardians do, until they’re 16.
And no, that’s not at all the argument I’m making. Trans ppl should have the same rights as everyone else
I have no idea whether you’re a woman or not, so I can’t answer your question.

And it might actually happen.
They couldn’t just treat being trans as any other disability.
They justify the comparison with "it would grant increased legal protection". They make claims of increasing stigma with no explanation of how.
The fight for disability rights and the fight for trans rights are closely aligned but don't completely overlap.
Transphobes believe we are mentally ill and unstable. To get those protections would mean to agree to that.
No thanks.
Is that not most of the fight?
I now understand you meant no harm, but calling being Transgender a disability is inaccurate at best and offensive/harmful at worst. It feeds into the narrative that trans people are mentally ill.

Fuck them.
this is from a recent slate article:
They were merely asking important academic questions. Providing context on a complex issue by giving voice to bigotry.
Just because they espoused bigoted views, they're suddenly bigots? For shame!
The Ed Board sees the prejudice in one of these dehumanizing actions, but not all. Why?
No. And no.
