Trying to decide if I will be cosplaying as the woman who loved the book or the woman who hated the book for book club tonight (I didn't read the book)

Go with "this book had nothing in it for me personally, nothing gripped me, not a single page"! See how that goes down. Oh, and try to speak last, be kind to yourself and take the clues on offer from others!😉
You could also be the women who accidentally read a completely different book and go in with utter confidence that you've read the material while acting like they didn't 😂
People who hate things they don't read exist in droves.
I was a little tadpole back and the day, and the flack that PokeMon got for pet-fighting/magic/evolution (from "mildest" to "serious") from parents who wouldn't come close to a handheld or play the console arena games was, funny to me (more)
-postscript: I was always bored from PokeMon (still am) but I feel like the PokeBans from fundies is pretty much "my friend's neighbor was offended" which makes it so that a green-tinted monochrome game with suggested violence is worse than Mario flameroasting turtles.
Normally I would say to use the book cover for guidance, but modern book covers seem intentionally misleading. Book cover:”this is a cute rom-com”. Actual book: “is this level of spicyness a crime?”
Pretend to be a really attentive listener and just repeat back someone else’s comment: “What I think I hear you saying is,’……’ I’m going do you have to take some time noodling on that. I didn’t come away with that on my initial reading. Thanks for that. This is why I love book club!”
My go to “I can’t decide if I liked it but there were some interesting parts.” Or you can always throw in a “So what did everyone think?” (Sips on wine and listens to comments)
Do what I do: read the first chapter (or at least a few pages), flip to 2 random parts of the book and just read those pages, and then declare in the group, "It was so bad I couldn't even read it."
I am the organizer 💁 and we are meeting in my business. The book was The Guest by Emma Cline and I did start it in February but it got returned via Libby before I got too far on it, and the wait list was too long--I haven't been able to get it back to finish
I almost never read the book. You can look up the first pages and synopsis of almost any book, it's like Cliff Notes. I fake it if I don't like the book summary. Why waste your time? Read only what you love.
have you considered cosplaying as “the woman who didn’t read a book and feels guilty enough about it to pretend otherwise”? It’s a complex role, but the richness and depth will be rewarding.

Then smile and nod again after they answer. “Boom”
Maybe cosplay a really quiet person just there for the coffee & cookies and catch up next time.

Out of interest, what was the book?
“The book was about Italian partisans in the 1940’s after the fall of Fascism.”
“Those Italians do like to party.”
“…”
“Who brought the bean dip? It’s delicious.”
