BlueSky becoming more useful for news basically every day. Simple reason: None of that Elon trash code that punishes direct links. People share stories and we click, like God intended.

Truth. @democracydocket.com was hours ahead of AP and all others on reporting on yesterday's exec order about disenfranchising voters. And they did it here way before anyone else.
Access to news is why I was able to make a clean break from twitter to here.
The community and entertainment aspect is still not as robust here, but I can scroll and find out “what’s going on” pretty quickly here which was the main usefulness twitter had for me.
And I dont care if some will call this an echo chamber- there is way too much corruption now! Elon and his ilk have the news and info space well controlled- there is too great a threat to our nation to give a flying fuck what the MaGa folk say.
The customizable feeds are huge too. Don't like the discover algorithm? Try out popular with people you follow or quiet posters you follow. There are just so many ways to organize information and posts here.
Serious question: Are there good articles documenting X code punishing direct links? (My students and I were discussing attributes of a good SM/news feed that keeps people anchored in reality yesterday, so I’m curious.)
I've tried to mirror my Twitter follow list, I'd say 60-70% of the same people are on BlueSky now, and it's amazing that I am much more informed by being on BlueSky than Twitter even though my timelines should basically overlap
And makes watching news irrelevant. So tired of the same people talking the same points. So tired of the MSNB hysterics and the "both sides"ism of CNN. Personally, I like to read. Reading is good. Give me info I can read and if I want someone to interpret it, I'll ask.
Agreed, but we're a small minority. The majority of Americans get their news from other social media platforms, legacy media outlets, or worse, Fox News. We are in a self-reinforcing echo chamber. It's great to stay informed, but there is not a whole lot of debate happening here.
This is my biggest issue here-I want the"breaking news" content as I used to have in [bad place]-as the shenanigns of the new administration filter down/impact in my community, but governments and entities like CalTrans to official gov sites need to migrate over. https://thisisreno.com/2025/03/usda-cuts-nv-food-programs/
I just wish folks, if they feel an absolute need to include photos, would only use ones the bad guys hate. For example, the CO portrait of the orange one or Muskmelon pre reconstructive surgery (pre hair plugs/chin implant). I tend to scroll past stuff with any images glorifying these two.
Especially powerful this morning to get Atlantic coverage of national security disaster text thread. I feel so well informed about what liars are ruling our country!
I truly think Twitter now operates at a level of subliteracy. The dominant communication mode is “waving around shit I saved to my phone like trading cards” and AI slop.
Not exactly truthful their Dave, it's not Elons trash code, it's socialist trash code from Twitter 1.0 that's eating your butt's. Most people's links work fine on https://X.com. so why won't yours? Tell us please.
And yet so many accounts still cling to the annoying old practice of putting the link in the second post even though it doesn’t eat into the character limit here.
Basically everyone I followed on twitter is here now and I’m getting pretty good instant news if I want to. It’s working very well for me. Plus no fucking blue check incel losers or russian bots in all the replies everywhere. It’s definitely growing very fast it seems.
I had to unfollow WP. Everything is paywalled from them. I don't mind paying for news but not WP's news. The only big mainstream paper I keep a sub. to is NYT. I don't like everything they say but I want access to some mainstream reporting.
I don't know what I did to deserve the Twitter feed I see when I poke my head back in there. I can do without nazi memes & being called a retard.
It's bad.
No - I think it requires you to do more work here. You have to perform your own curation - no algorithm doing the work for you.
It’s often that I remember someone who’s posts I haven’t seen in awhile then go check & they’ve posted tons of content.

That's not my experience. A couple of weeks ago, a well renowned journalist published a very wrong take on constitutional law. He is followed by lots of law professors. Everybody just stayed quiet and looked away because the author is considered a good guy. Not one person said this is wrong.
what you mean is that Bluesky doesn't have enough annoying centrists having big accounts, but the real problem is we don't have enough people debating whether Joel Embiid is washed or stanning Doja Cat or arguing over the best outdoor light fixtures
we emphatically do not need more pedants whining about Jamelle Bouie and echo chambers. We are amply stocked. That many end up blocked by the people they wish to antagonize ought to engender more self-reflection than self-satisfaction among the blocked, but alas.
Then how am I on this platform if my code is junk? This platform, made by my dear friend JD, was plagerized, right down to the source code. Stay jealous.
The whole point of the internet is clicking things! Now if we can get the computer to make a little clicky sound whenever you do that, we can finally return to Greatness

The best way to hit these cretans
is to uninstall all of their products and never visit their ecosystems
again.
How rude😉

And you can switch if you want! And if you switch, your choice sticks!
For example, for econ news, I follow #econsky
It's kind of like how facebook totally abandoned its relationship status thing which opened to door for tinder to do basically the same thing.
Without that Xitter stays ahead for those of us following pols & journos.
“I’m going to fight the fascists any way I can but also help them earn revenue to defeat us…”
BlueSky instead (preaching to the choir maybe…)
It's good for that, and has been for a while.
It's getting better about the news being right here on it too.
I occasionally go on Threads and the “For You” tab is nothing but outrage bait based on a post I looked at a month ago just to roll my eyes.
Then i wondered who i can argue with. Lol
I also subscribe to news through Apple News+

When Matt Yglesias is considered too right wing by a substantial part of the user base, that's a problem.
Too many act like being on the same platform as left/centrist blogger types is a bridge too far. Just block him, if you want.
It's pretty good for basketball, and ok for football. But that's really it.
They need to figure out a way to incentivize official NFL, NBA, etc team accounts on here.
