My favorite book was banned. It’s called The House on Mango Street and it’s about a Mexican American girl. I even wrote an article about how it changed my life.
The Trump Administration wants to re-segregate the US. Yes, we should support trans people. But African Americans are his real target for eliminating DEI initiatives. And companies that are obeying in advance should never get another dollar from the public. Stay WOKE!
I just love it when the Christian right-wingers claim that a book has sexual content simply because it features a gay character or same-sex couple. But somehow a book that features a heterosexual character or couple isn't sexual unless, well, there's actually sex mentioned in it. So fair & logical!
Fair points but I wish ppl would just focus on not banning books rather than dweilling on which lanes are being banned. It skews the argument into activism, which puts some ppl off. All bans are terrible.
Banning books again? We back in 1933? You know it’s about to get worse for a while when they start burning books 😭 why do fascists always have to feel threatened by books… kinda weak & pathetic when you think about it🙄 the amount of effort to stay uneducated…could’ve also made them top of class
Really? That's so sad, why is people obsessed with color of other people, even if phenotype and genotype exist, that doesn't mean we should separate humans in groups, we are all humans, and that is the only think that matters, much less forbid thing that incluide other people in their human condition
Banning books has never been and never will be about children.
It is either faux religious outrage or bald face hate.
No protection but power and control.
WAYNE GRETZKY. If you will stand by and watch the criminal American president co-opt you and your reputation to assist his efforts to annex your home then you are without honour. You should be ashamed. Speak up!!
We have to be smart and use our own brains to decide what is good and what is evil.
When studying for my degree there were some books that I really didn't like but ban them because I didn't like them no that shouldn't happen
If they are really concerned about the mentions of violence and improper sexual references in books, the Bible should be the first book thrown out of all libraries.
Wouldn’t it great if every black athlete would protest, and stop making all those white owners start bleeding dollars. I know it won’t happen but it’s a thought, nice if they would defend their heritage and all the black lives lost in doing so to make their lives easier. Maybe next time.
The people who are most affected, have never had economic power.
Democrats, liberals, and progressive are often focused on feelings, sensitivity, empathy; MAGAS, devoid of conscious, don’t care how their hatred affects anyone.
Don't take this out of context, but I would sincerely wish that more than 36% of banned books had characters/people of color in them, because I would hope that books on the whole had a much higher percentage!
I remember on a dating website there was a question:
What is more offensive, burning books or flags?
99% of those who opted for burning flags were from the US.
Correct me if there ever were facts or poetry on a flag
"You're oppressing me by existing! I have to recognize people and thoughts I find counter to my own! I'm a victim!"
If these bigots are so oppressed then how come they're in power? Same victim hood, scapegoating playbook Stalin, Mao and Hitler used to get people on their side.
Then the entire mainstream media will bend over backwards to interview some random POS Republican to get their opinion knowing everything they say is a lie while completely ignoring the left that is trying to save America from these terrorists.
Seriously interested: What's everyone's opinion about spending strikes? Digital strikes? Work slow down/ stoppage? Will it lead to a change in governmental structure in the US?
Grass roots movements like spending strikes are effective at showing power. But you also have to mean business. Action needs to lead to additional requested actions and demands to remedy the current situation. If Half the country boycotted certain brands or industries that would show real power!
Agreed. I'm boosting all of the efforts at every level and participate, but the speed of change is not keeping pace with the speed of their damage. Does anyone have ideas on speeding things up?
Organize at local level. Friends. Neighbors. Towns. Moms. Dads. Kids. Protest. Put real faces to the movement. Tell stories about the effects of these programs getting cut. Show more than outrage show effects on schools, elderly, etc. Organize local protests. Contact the Press demand accountability
India did daily protests for over a year until C19 stopped them. They did it in shifts, ppl were always there. A majority is needed, unity is needed. When ppl reach "miserable" they'll figure it out, but so much damage will be done by then.
1930-40's Fascists banned and burned books, Communists banned and burned books, Republicans ban books- Control the mind, find scapegoats, remove people from society-where is our democracy heading folks?
How were they able to do such an incisive analysis of banned books? Is there an underground railroad of banned books? Do you keep copies under your floorboards to hand out to renegades? What a pitiful post, Maris!
Meanwhile, the grotesque hypocrisy of the trans crusade continues:
Cross-dressing at college and bathroom swapping in high school were fun and games for Jadey, who is currently 2nd in official US military chain of command.
If white is the ‘superior race’, why are they so fearful of POC and the brilliance and excellence they display. What is it they are fearful of? Just asking?
Banning books has familiar ring to it. On the night of Kristallnacht the nazis burned books. After book burning all the Jewish people were removed. Where are we headed in this country?
Huh? People of color aren't rare. 36% is a low number for books, period. Let alone banned books. When the book bans are out of control, we don't need to make comments that don't help our case.
Most people already knew what it was about...totally feel the shame some supposedly feel knowing how badly they made life for brown skinned people, and they are doing the same for the LGTBQ+ group..all in the name of safety..saddening to know it's still a thing😳🤔
Take a Judy Blume book, take all the white characters and make them black. Take all the hetero characters and make them queer. Watch people lose their minds. Same book.
The more they try to ban books, the more intriguing the banned books become, and go underground, and more people will drop their judgements about others. 'they' are very stupid.
two books i read recently came from banned list, the kite runner, not too good, i guess it got banned because it portrayed russia as inept and corrupt in it's afgan invasion. glass castle, good read, i liked it. banned because it made kentucky look bad?
They just want to protect all children from ideas they don't like while still claiming the mantel of free speech absolutism. Their cognitive dissonance is so transparently shallow.
I can understand where you’re coming from— trying to point out hypocrisy— but the people who ban books will ban the Bible, too. They don’t read it and they don’t understand it.
Book bans come from people who want to control people.
I have no desire to argue this subject because you made a rather odd argument to my very true point that most people banning books stand by their Bible. So am going to mute you.
Um, okay. That’s not actually true. On one hand Bible thumpers staunchly stand behind their gross book of fairytales and on the other hand indiscriminately ban books worthy of consideration and inclusion.
The majority of idiots who ban books are Christian.
Thumping the Bible is not the same as reading it. I encounter those same people in both my line of work (librarian) and in religious contexts (I’m Pagan).
My experience is that they haven’t read any of those books— not the ones their local fash group told them to complain about, nor the Bible. 🤷♀️
I still remember an interview with the author of New Kid where he said the portions of the book the parents were opposed to were parts based on actual events he and his son had lived through. That spoke volumes.
The wrong books are being banned. What should be banned are books from far right, nazi, MAGA, or Christian nationalist content. They're far more threatening than a book from nonwhite authors.
Or, jeezus forbid, talking animals and mythical creatures among the woke. Charlotte’s Web, The Bluest Eye, To Kill a Mockingbird…..now don’t bring up the Narnia Chronicles, nor The Ring trilogy, because THOSE ARE DIFFURNT
We read about the failings of the past however painful to learn and to be inspired to do better. Sadly this GOP does not read. They are following the authoritarian playbook that lead to loss of freedoms, persecutions, violence and destruction. This power play is not forming a more perfect union.
People who challenge books or who call for them to be banned in libraries always have an ulterior motive. Or their motive is transparent and it's patently stupid. What two lesbians are raising a child? It's so fucking ridiculous
I can't remember the name of it, but, it was a Robert Heinlein book I read long, long and you don't find out one of the main characters is black till the last paragraph. Definitely written to make you think.
The fascists are counting on the idea that they have retrained Americans not to read books and only get their "news" from social media.
Everything online reminds me of the old 'National Enquirer' magazines. Headlines like "Liz Taylor Has Alien Baby" told us the mag was fiction. Now fiction reigns
My then 14 yr old cousin: "why were these books banned."
Me: *tells him why they were banned*
My cousin: "I feel like most of these books are banned because they're about minorities."
Me: *smiles, because he gets it.*
For anyone curious, the 2023 CCBC report found that 46% of YA books have "significant BIPOC content," and 39% have "at least one BIPOC primary character."
I've been saying this a lot. I've been told that 'someone' had their child bring home a pornographic book from their elementary school. Refused to believe that either 'someone' was exaggerating, or someone else planted the book intentionally. Librarians are not providing sex books to kids.
I always demand proof of the claim: give the title of the book, the school/library (NOT the district, which can include high schools), and the name of the town.
Every single time, it’s been someone butthurt that teens might read a book at the teen level. 🤷♀️
Charlotte's Web is what gets me! Supposedly, it's because the animals talk & it's against some religion. Well, a pig & other animals talk in Babe. Why hasn't it been banned? Homeward Bound? Same situation. Lion King? Lady & The Tramp? The book Animal Farm? I could go on, but I've made my point.
What a time to be writer, when the government wants to over reach with their power. 🙃
And some folks on booktok were saying books aren't political. Yeah you can guess who they voted for.
Books are 💯 political, and they were on the ballot.
And sadly some folks missed that memo 🫠
My mother let me read whatever I wanted. As a child she told me, if you get confused or scared or worried about anything you read, tell me and we’ll figure it out.
That’s how you raise a literate child. That’s how you raise a powerful adult.
Just like banning abortion wasn’t about protecting life but about controlling women, book bans aren’t about protecting children but about controlling what they see and indoctrinate them to a 1950’s way of thinking.
Please tell me that every place that banned books (For the protection of Children) banned the book that had Lot daughters getting him drunk and committing incest with him
as well as this verse
I know this isn't really your point. But I would be interested to know what the numbers are for other races and ethnic groups. For example, if 36% of them have a person of color, that would imply to me that the other 64% banned has only white people in it and is therefore more censored.
This is obviously a false equivalence because the number of books written by/about POC is so much smaller. I'm also not trying to defend the book banning. Just highlighting how a comparative relationship here isn't super sound because we're talking about apples and very racist oranges.
Banning things that might make kids upset or confused or scared etc damages their learning, and a lot of the things they want to ban are real things that happened to real people. It's important to read things that scare you in literature, otherwise you're unprepared when something happens for real.
The U.S. is prejudice. So what else is new? They are just more open about it now that it is encouraged by the government and apparently not against the law any more. Oh for the good old days (a couple of months ago).
This is an issue that should be left to parents. Since the GOP MAGAs profess to be all for parents’ rights, let parents decide, with their children, which books are appropriate. And maybe even trust the teachers to know which types of reading materials are ok for the age groups they teach in class.
💯 they never talk about parents who actually want their children to be able to read the books, even though they’re the major majority of appearance their rights apparently do not count for these fools
Why am I not surprised? Oh yeah, they'd rather have a convicted felon that wears more makeup on the daily than most women who's also a racist misogynistic con man, than someone that's actually qualified for the job. This tracks.
Won't someone think of the white children? They have been horribly repressed in this country. Forcing them to compete on equal grounds will all those non-white children.
Damned liberals won't even let them own slaves anymore!!!
If they are banning explicit sex, violent sex, rape, incest, men impregnating underage girls, they should probably move the Christian Bible to the top of the stack. It's full of sick & twisted sexual situations, often tied to murder.
if ah kid over the age of 12 will be able to access porn thr ah daft phn . these ain't toys now . they get monitoring us although we don't want them to . but evrything we see and do gets used in data for the use of AI withch is gony happen just like industrial revolution
My junior year 83, the teacher told us on Friday that we be reading "The Catcher in the Rye"
On Monday , he informed us that the administration had banned us from reading that book
By Friday ,2/3 of the class had a copy and were reading it
We read that junior year in high school, 1981. One parent refused to let their child read it. She did anyway. None of us felt it was all that controversial.
The whole English class I was in was assigned to do a book report on The Diary of Anne Frank. This was during the holidays in 1986 in a private Baptist academy that dripped judgemental. I guess there was no popular reason against it at the time.
Basically.

If this was ever about protecting children, they would have arrested Trump, Epstein, Gaetz, and all of the other right-wing pastors that have sexually abused children.
Meanwhile, their precious little darling, fragile of mind and in need of being protected, is in his bedroom with is ipad watching a woman fuck a horse....book banning, so dumb....

Democrats, liberals, and progressive are often focused on feelings, sensitivity, empathy; MAGAS, devoid of conscious, don’t care how their hatred affects anyone.
They always target the books first and then they enact ever bolder and bolder laws against their target group.
Lastly, murder.

It’s time to fortify the constitution to protect #Americans from #little #dictator lawmakers at the local, state and Federal levels.
Read our petition (in bio) on how we can build on the 21st amendment that banned bans on alcohol. 🗽
If these bigots are so oppressed then how come they're in power? Same victim hood, scapegoating playbook Stalin, Mao and Hitler used to get people on their side.
Witch trials & burnings coming to your community soon,
When they have sufficiently “othered” they turn on each other - that’s how HATE works

Continue to rise up, people of colour.
The cries about free speech are another sick hypocritical Republican joke.
Those homophobes are the EXACT reason why people become gay in the first place 😂😂
Trauma from religion is how you make everyone gay and unhappy lmaoooo
These people are fucking stupid
Your poor parenting skills and emotional immaturity did
Idiots. 😂😂😂
How fucking racist are America's bookshelves?
Book bans come from people who want to control people.
People who want to read the Bible are our allies.
The majority of idiots who ban books are Christian.
