Actually I read that goldfinches do this because they are territorial, so see their reflection and think it’s another bird. in which case I say HAHA WHAT AN IDIOT
Cardinals do this too. We moved into a house and I kept hearing this sound like something tapping on our basement windows. Lo and behold, it was a cardinal.
Oh yeah, birds will do that! I got bird window decals specifically to prevent them from fighting their reflection to death. They're clear, but uv so the birds see 'em and avoid the window!
Sees the sky reflected in your window and thinks it can fly through. There are reflective stickers you can put on windows especially made to keep birds from killing themselves in window strikes
Birds are master builders of nests. Their nests are pretty amazing, but I guess the saying “bird brain“ came from somewhere. That is a beautiful goldfinch by the way.
Yep! That's it! There are blue jays here that attack the side view mirrors on cars when they begin to mate. People have to bag the mirrors to get yhem to stop.
He’ll probably die because he doesn’t understand unless you put something on the window. There are window cling decals you can get that keep birds from doing this.
As this bird's attorney I would like the record to show for the court how the defendent clearly shows animosity while mocking this homeless bird. It's a tragedy and an outrage, your honor.
He's at war with his own reflection. While amusing to us, it is energetically costly for him. You can tape up a piece of paper or something so that the reflection becomes less apparent, and he will, perhaps, go about his activities of daily life, including, with any luck, procreation!
Goldfinches are tenacious. I watched a female and male from my office window that were on my boss' car. The male kept attacking the side mirror. The female finally left after 10 minutes but the male continued to attack the mirror.
Evil little birds. We had a yellow Finch doing the same thing so we put up a feeder for him. Brought his friends. 20 years later we have 10 or so feeders of various types, binoculars, bird books & apps. Be wary, that's what started our addiction!
It would be kind to put up some tape or something so little dude doesn’t hurt himself. Wax paper applied with painter’s tape would do it. He’s probably got a nest nearby.
He's an American Goldfinch (literally, that's the common name). Just pretend you are the country of Canada, and imagine him being donnie trump, and ignore him.
I’d be thrilled to visit through the window with such a gorgeous golden creature. I am stuck with these two characters who march up and down the wall outside my office window and look in and yell their heads off so loudly you can’t talk on the phone.
OMG. Is stalking part of their breed? I had a Goldfinch one summer who not leave me alone. Would change windows to find me. My husband asked me if he should be jealous?
Reminds me of an old job I had. We couldn't figure out where this loud 'tunktunktunk' sound was coming from until I noticed a woodpecker going absolutely hog wild on this metal plate maintenance had bolted over a pipe into the building.
Little man managed to turn that flat plate into a bowl.
Strange fact of the day. I volunteer with the Parks department under two Ornithologists banding birds. Goldfinches smell like maple syrup wood wood. They eat maple sap and buds and it makes them smell like it.
That's a male goldfinch. It's the Washington State bird. If you can attract them to your yard with a multi-perch thistle feeder, you will be entertained for hours on end.
It is pretty bad for them to peck at their reflection like that, they make special stickers for windows that help with reflections so birds don’t get confused
This happens mainly during nesting season. Put up a sheer white or off-white light filtering curtain or shade. It doesn't cut the light but protects the bird (and your upholstery from sun damage).
“I’m gonna get you. And your dog. And your cat. Then I’m gonna eat bird seed while sitting on your couch binging the sopranos and laughing all the way through. “
Maybe the poor bird needs to read this.
Glass is an inorganic solid material that is usually transparent or translucent as well as hard, brittle, and impervious to the natural elements.
Often birds will see their reflection and protect their turf. If you put something on th outside of the window you will prevent the bird from hurting himself.
I have a cardinal that has been attacking my house and car windows for years. I think it is weird behavior, but those in the know say it’s normal for MALE birds🤼
Yes, all spring they will attack their reflections in shiny surfaces. I had an insane sparrow starting at dawn hitting my bedroom window every morning, well before I normally got up. I finally taped newspapers over the glass, as he would otherwise just throw himself at the window over & over again.
Reflection, the same reason that they strike windows. This time of year the migrating birds, who don't actually live around humans, lack the sophistication to understand windows; Hayseeds. You can get anti-bird-strike stickers to prevent Cletus-events.
Sees his reflection as another male in his territory. Put some labels or coverings where he is pecking and save his life by removing the ability to see a reflection. He’ll attack until his beak is destroyed and he starves to death.
The turkeys at work are notorious for attacking cars and windows because they see their reflection. One was so persistent that he didn’t make it even after our old Executive Director tried to rescue him from his own aggression. I’d tape up something to hide the reflection.
The bird sees its reflection in the window and thinks it's another male goldfinch in it's territory.
The finch is like: "so you gona fight about it?" "You're pretty quick for an interloper." "Who you looking at?" "Get the hell out of here!" "Leave Looser!"

5 AM EVERY MORNING.
Once I covered the outside of that window with newspaper it stopped.
I’ve been having that problem with a robin attacking the mirrors on my jeep, since March.
I covered the mirrors as a kindness, so it went for the windows. 🤷🏼♀️
He’s finally wising up.
Poop galore, though.
But, what a beauty of a bird!
I'm so jealous
For some reason I find this hilarious and love to watch it
But I never understood why and now duh I get it, they think it's other birds invading their space! Just hope they aren't hurting themselves
It’s you bubba. It’s you. 🤣🤣🤣
Put up a sheer curtain or shade so it can't see its reflection.
Little man managed to turn that flat plate into a bowl.
He might be an illegal migrant … 🤣🤣🤣
